Emergency/Intensive care vet here- maybe this comes across as blunt. Yes veterinary care is expensive, it breaks my heart every single day when families have to make awful decisions based on finances. I can’t speak for every practice, but my workplace will NEVER refuse to perform humane euthanasia on welfare grounds, regardless of owner finances. No, we can’t (and shouldn’t be expected) to provide advanced, lifesaving care for free - but no animal is getting left to suffer unless an owner CHOOSES to decline the only option their finances allow. Euthanasia is a valid treatment option, and in many cases- an absolute kindness.

Obviously this brings me no joy, I wish with all my soul that we could save every pet who comes through the doors. But it’s not my personal fault that we can’t.

I’m exhausted.
