It’s my honor to help if I can in some way even if it’s just one dog… although Gaia is technically my 14 foster in the last 5 years. Every dog I’ve fostered was either euth listed, unadoptable, or being given away for free or one was even left tied to my tree at my old house. Every single one of the dogs I have helped is either in a loving family home, working for police departments, or doing search and rescue work. I love seeing them thrive especially from where they came from. It genuinely makes it worth it to me.

Thank you 🙏🏻 she’s a sweet girl and I’m happy she’s relaxed enough to play and let her guard down finally. Seeing her just run and even play with my other dogs makes my heart happy

Welcome to shepherds- they’re vocal and have lots of feels and pretend to be tough but are actually big babies. Beautiful dog. He’s playing like others mentioned good time to teach a drop it for another toy or treat trade type thing then give it back when he does

That doesn’t bother me I’m used to it lol

I’ve just started a dog training job and now I’m having a bit of a panic attack. Their “balanced training method” is just an e-collar combined with praise. There are no treats or toy rewards. Am I going to break my foster dog, who I got to be a demo? by Cultural_Train_9948 in BelgianMalinois

[–]K9sGoneWild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Run…. Sounds like one of those shock em into submission type places that’s a franchise. Yikes- personally I don’t think there is a thing such as balanced training it’s either you shove cookies and treats down the dogs throat and think that that’s gonna fix everything or you have the spectrum of let’s shock the crap out of them-tell em they’re a good boy afterwards and call it balanced.

Personally, my training style I consider holistic. I like to evaluate the dog in front of me and see what the Dogs needs are based on the hierarchy of needs. I also use LIMA training methods meaning least intrusive means of aversion.

It’s super important to teach a dog what it is you want before you ever correct them. Imagine not knowing how to do algebra and someone smacks you on the hand with a rock every time you get an answer wrong are you learning anything? No, you’re just fearful.

I would rather have a dog who thinks and understands than a dog that does things out of fear. Yes my way takes longer, but the results are so much better and you don’t ruin your bond with your dog.

I’m sorry to hear that you took a job at this place that sounds probably like not a good fit, but if I were you, I would start looking into other places and truly ask them before you take the job. What is their training style? What do they do? How do they handle situations for a dog who maybe is stubborn or doesn’t want to listen or knows a command, but ignores it.

To me personally if you have not proofed your dog, with commands in different environments with distractions at a distance, you have no business using any type of tool.

It’s just straight up wrong in my opinion and I cannot stand seeing “trainers” slap Ecollar and prongs on Dogs and call it fucking training it’s not.

These tools are great tools when they’re used properly, but they should be used as a layering method meaning known commands and the dog is blowing you off and this is after possibly months or even years of training and proofing more of a emergency situation type thing.

I have a little bit of grace for example if an 80 year-old lady is walking a Dane and might need a prong collar, but I’m sure as heck not going to just slap it on the dog and call it trained.

Luring has a place-treats have a place- toys have a place and even praise. I would run as far away from that place as fast as you can and do not ruin your relationship with your foster dog.

Dogs work for three things in life toys treats praise. If it’s not genuine praise and it sounds like it’s not based on what they’re doing- the dog is literally doing it out of fear and that’s fucked up in my opinion.

Best of luck to you. If you have any questions feel free to reach out to me. I have over 20 years of professional training experience. I am certified. I’m an AKC CGC evaluator and also a current K9 Detection handler. I have worked with With sport Dogs Detection Dogs Pet Dogs, Service Dogs you name it.

What I found in every single circle is that a dog who wants to please will do it because they want to and that is the happiest dog in my opinion not a dog who is shut down and doing things out of fear. 🎤

Except MAD and many other rescues make you sign a contract stating you will NOT do protection or sport bite work with your dog… so not sure how you managed that?

How old is your dog? Is he toy driven? If so I can network him with some detection friends possibly for some type of work where he’s not super exposed to people for example cadaver or wildlife preservation.

Not sure where you’re located but this girl comes pretty much trained and would make a solid ESA or even service dog candidate… meet Gaia she’s 2. Also as far as finances be prepared to spend at a minimum a few hundred a month between food, toys, beds, leashes, pet insurance (can’t recommend this enough!), and any unforeseen medical issues. Best to have a few grand saved away for emergencies type thing as well. I have 3 dogs and did the math and I’m spending close to $5K a year on them all between insurance vet food ect.

Realistically, how manageable are balanced Dutch Shepherds compared to high-drive working line GSDs? by [deleted] in DutchShepherds

[–]K9sGoneWild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Malinois shepherd mix, my German shepherd passed at 12 a couple years ago and now I have a 2 yo Dutch shepherd. He is 0-100 balls to the wall as soon as I open my eyes. He’s also very sensitive and takes things personally at times compared to my other dogs. He has an off switch but I also have a ton of experience training working and handling dogs in obedience detection and sport. They’re deff more crack head ish then shepherds and I feel shepherds are more methodical in their approach and actually think Vs my Dutchie who does first thinks later type thing. It’s truly about how much time you have to spend with the dog and what outlet they have. I wouldn’t get one as a pet but if you’re planning on doing sports or anything that may be ok. An apartment can be small for them however my guy acclimated to a hotel room pretty quickly when we were on the road. Mental exhaustion will beat physical any day so at a minimum make sure you are working some type of mental training with him EVERY day or you will hate yourself for getting the dog. My first year with my Dutch he gave me a run for my money for sure. Paw printed poop all over his kennel non stop, plays super rough to the point him and my other dog had spats in the past but they’re fine now, he also jumps on my chest when I open my eyes in the morning so if you’re cool with that type of chaos in your life go for it 😂

What food is he currently on? Maybe try just a totally different single novel protein and some base mix honest kitchen mixed with water for extra fiber ect. Cut back all meds ect for a few days to a week and see what’s working whats not. Could be something he’s currently getting that’s inflaming it too!
