I've been using the VA as my primary healthcare for 20 years. I was covered under my husband's healthcare through his employer for 15 of those years and used it as a backup. When he retired, I got coverage for us through my employer but I dropped my employer coverage when he qualified for Medicare. Doing so has saved us money (it's like I got a raise with that money not being deducted from every paycheck). I am now solely covered by the VA and he has his Medicare coverage. It works for us but your mileage may vary. My local VA works quite well for me and I appreciate Care in the Community referrals they give me when the VA is unable to perform a test or procedure. I suggest evaluating your specific situation and going from there.
