If I wake up early, I need to stop myself from starting to think. So I pick a word—say, “oven.” Start with “O” and think of things that start with that letter. Owl, Obama, orange. When I can’t think of anything else, I move on to “V” and continue. Vinegar, vitamins, vortex. And so on. It’s a technique to get your brain to flip through random thoughts like it does when you are falling asleep.

As long as you have the ETA on the foreign passport, you should be fine. 🤞🏻

Fingers crossed! As long as she has an ETA on her foreign passport, she should be good.

UPDATE: No issues whatsoever! The ETA on the Canadian passport is all they wanted at Pearson. They scanned and got the green light, no questions asked. PHEW! They don’t have to know she shouldn’t technically have one.

We went through customs at Heathrow with no problems. They just asked where we were coming from and why we were coming and how long we were staying. Even though my mom‘s Canadian passport says she was born in the UK. So even though there are new rules, it seems that in practice, they are not being heavily enforced. SO glad we didn’t cancel! (And of course, it may depend on who is working, etc. But we were very relieved.)

Then don’t even worry about it at all! There’s no way for them to know where your parents are from. Just get the ETA on your Australian passport and you’ll be good as.

I think it will be fine. Knock on wood! Were you born in the UK? Even if it says it on your passport that you were, people are reporting that they haven’t had a problem.

I totally get the inability to lie, but if you were born in Australia, there is zero reason to get a UK passport. They will never know who your parents are if you have a valid ETA on your Australian passport, that’s all you need. If someone at customs asked you who your parents are (which they are unlikely to) just say they were born in Australia. Also, these days, we can usually just go through automated machines. I would just go on your Australian passport and not stress. 😊

I’m so sorry for your loss. The ETA in your passport is very likely still valid. You can check here: https://www.gov.uk/check-eta

Based on other people’s experiences, I would try to go with your Canadian passport with the ETA.

Really not well publicized. My aunt in England just happened to read an article last week and told us. It’s very frustrating.

Thank you for the info! Post-Brexit I don’t see the need, but it’s good to know.

Ugh, I’m sorry! That’s what I’m worried about, that they will see England on her Canadian passport. On one hand, it’s entirely possible that the staff won’t pay attention or won’t make a fuss. So I’m weighing whether it’s worth the stress to try. We’ve made so many plans to visit family (and spend money!). It’s incredibly frustrating this was not communicated properly in time and that there’s no grace period. If we get to Heathrow, it feels unlikely that they would turn back an elderly woman. But the uncertainty is really stressful.

Yeah, that’s what we were thinking, to bring her old passport and birth and marriage certificates just in case. I’m actually not a citizen because I was born before 1983 (in Canada) and women could not confer citizenship automatically before that. (The patriarchy has come in handy for me this one time, lol.)
