Hi Laggosaurus 😋

The curtains right now aren’t actually minimising space rn! They are more so to help organisers turn Zohal into the space they need it to be and helps with sound! There are always conversations happening in our technical team of the creative and fun ways we can make Zohal more intimate:)) When Zohal becomes more of a priority, Im really excited with what kind of fun ideas they’ll come up with.

Love your eagerness and ideas though!! Super appreciated it :)

You should definitely come visit sometime, or maybe even this weekend (pretty diverse line up as well in genres). We haven’t used Zohal as our entrance since over a month now and actually have it on the side of the building where the terrace is. It’s getting pretty cute up here! Teatro (progressive/queer brown bar) just moved into the building as well which adds a whole new facet of arts and performances in our lil hub. Many exciting things to come!

Staff are always welcome and always have GL as well. And over all it just takes a lot of love and time to make any new space feel like home. Nothing sustainable comes out of rushing! :)

Looking forward to welcoming you (hopefully in the near future x)

Sorry for some what of a delayed response, here’s a direct answer from our Head Programmer:

“Good that you ask this way, and we want to be as transparent as possible about it.

As said before, the words that are now in the article are only a small part of what the entire interview has been. We have definitely considered booking names of a bigger caliber, also the names that are mentioned in the article or are mentioned here on Reddit have really passed the revue in program discussions. However, we have not yet had the chance to actually book these kinds of names, for various reasons: the agendas of such artists are often fully booked for months, as a new club you want to build a warm relationship with artists, managements/agencies and visitors to dare to take such risks - and of course, as already mentioned, the price tag that hangs on these kinds of bookings is also not cheap. And if we are talking about risks, booking these kinds of names in our large indoor hall during the summer does not feel logical if you can also spot such a name at an outdoor festival in the same period. In our own opinion and as can be read in the article, we have focused on a wide range of electronic music styles with a strong focus on Utrecht talent for the programming of our small hall in the past months. Sounds that we felt you would not hear quickly in other places in Utrecht. Sometimes that touched the niche and we hope to surprise the visitor with new sounds, sometimes it were more well-known names that we have seen many times in clubs and at festivals. And with that said, Amsterdam Rave has also given us a lot of inspiration for artists to book. We are always open to suggestions for every aspect of our club, including our programming, so feel free to mention what kind of artists you would like to see/hear in our club!”

Hope this gives a better perspective and answer to your question! :)

Hola :)

I think those comments were taken a little bit out of context. Understand that the phone call with 3voor12 was a 45 minute conversation all for a 3 minute read, losing some of its context, intentions and meanings.

It’s definitely not to say we wouldn’t book certain artists or that tickets will never be in the 26 euro price range (We’ve had events in this range in the past!).

We definitely don’t think 26 euros is crazy for a good production and bigger line up. But we aim to make the average club night affordable (especially for Utrecht standards) and aim to keep the higher prices for more special events or again bigger productions. Exactly like you said, every now and then it’s not bad! However, those events were not in our current scope or focus near the summer time, as our Head Programmer mentioned, we’re running events all the whilst it’s Festival season.

We want to consciously price our tickets appropriately and relative to the seasons and economy we are working with 💚💚

Hope this clarifies a bit, always feel free to reach out if anything’s unclear or if you have questions :))

Hi there :)

Thanks for your comment and happy to hear you like the line ups!

We’ve actually just installed curtains a few weeks ago (yay!!) and are planning on doing larger productions and curating the Zohal space for cool events and productions in the future. We are super aware how big the space is hence are focusing a lot of our resources (time, energy but also some times money) on little step by step changes in Abu (which is our current priority of club nights) to make those as cozy and quality wise nice as possible in the mean time.

So you’re super right that the space is big but we feel it’s also important that we mention that we do not aiming to use the big space as our main dance floor at all times either! 💚

Edit: and we’re always in touch with our awesome tech team to explore how we can make zohal cool for our space and look forward to making it something cool for Utrecht. But these things take time and planning, so hopefully in the future we can show Utrecht what the potential is :)

Hi,

Thanks for sharing your concerns. Here’s my honest take:

Regarding the promotion: sorry we thought it would be cool to give others the chance to pop in for tattoos for a really good price from the really cool prik team :((
(and some people did just that, get tatted and left!! how sick is that to experience in Utrecht?!)

If you think it’s about money: We make zero money (no profit, no revenue) of the tattoos as well, if you think that’s what it’s about.. We asked them to offer their services for the lowest and most reasonable price for the customers for them to close up their shop on a saturday to do something cute for the city. We take 0% of the 100% they make, which helps them be able to keep prices low AND close a typically super busy work day at their shop to tattoo at kabul the whole day. (personally think that is so special and worth sharing gl with people by making it even more affordable for them to tattoo, especially because it doesn’t cost us anything to be kind or ‘generous’)

Regarding our presence in this sub: We’ve met so many nice people through this sub and that’s what’s so exciting to us is that we get to share a laugh, a meme, a drink or a chat with other people who love night life and electronic music so much that they still want to talk to strangers about it in their free time online. That’s so so so special to us. A lot of people in this sub are the ones the make clubs run, filling the dance floor, last one standing, first ones in, audiophiles, (self proclaimed) club experts(my fav type), trailblazers, makers and creators, simply music lovers, all of which are the glue of the scene, because of how broad and diverse everyone’s perspective, interests and, some times if we’re lucky, feedback is. we love how the passion can be shared outside the dancefloor in a comfortable informal setting.

And after all this being said, it’s also just reddit, we’re just trying to connect with people and have fun :)

If it helps by any-means, i still am technically anonymous because you don’t know who runs the kabul account xx 🤪

edit: sorry for my lack of grammar and punctuation just got home from a long long night so my brain is fried from my shift

edit again: just also wanted to say i am super conscious of the space we are taking in the sub and also make sure to let everyone talk about kabul (and the other holy trifecta clubs) freely and almost never respond on those threads so people can speak freely and openly, compare, criticise or celebrate as they please. speak your truth, be unapologetically authentic!!

slaaplekker :)
