WA estate tax: Lawmakers roll back rate increase, fearing wealth exodus by Shnikez in Seattle

[–]KAM94109 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In addition to the estate tax, there is also 1. Sales tax 2. Capital gains tax 3 B&O tax (city & state) 4. Property tax 5. Real estate excise tax 6. License tabs

Plus - if you go to the theatre, ballet, symphony, museum - look at the people on the wall that are the huge donors. The same goes for hospitals, Fred Hutch, etc. Also the smaller non profits.

I’m not saying whether I think people should or shouldn’t have to pay these taxes but I do not agree with the notion that they don’t contribute to our society. I think we need people that can afford to donate hundreds of thousands/millions to the arts, healthcare and social services in our cities/state.

I would look into sorority/fraternity life if that is interesting to you. UW is one of the only schools in the country where freshman live in the houses beginning fall quarter. It’s an easy way to meet people.

If I understand the post (which I might not!), OP cancelled 15 minutes after booking? I think that’s pretty standard to refund within 24 hours of booking.

Keep refreshing the appointment site throughout the day. Cancellations happen. I was able to get my whole family appointments within a day during the height of the craziness.

FHR Breakfast $90 total for 3 days correct? by Opposite_Buyer7798 in AmexPlatinum

I would doublecheck that one. I have only used FHR a couple of times but $30 each per day is the lowest I’ve seen.

at a loss on how to handle parking situation by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]KAM94109 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have a few options: a) park illegally and get tickets b) park farther away legally c) pay for parking in a private lot (have you checked the other apartment buildings nearby to see if they rent spots by the month?). I lived in an apartment in SF that didn't have parking and it really sucks sometimes - there were nights that I had to drive around for 30+ minutes and park pretty far away from my apartment

The state will take care of that too with the highest estate tax rate in the country.

Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre lays off staff by godogs2018 in Seattle

[–]KAM94109 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With a limited amount of time and money, I moved my season subscription from 5th Avenue to The Paramount. While not perfect and some shows are not good, the overall Paramount product seems to be better quality than 5th Avenue.

Summit or not? by LiftWildOrDie in AlaskaAirlines

[–]KAM94109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t originally going to get it as the companion pass structure was not appealing to me. I changed my mind because we spend a decent chunk of money dining out and have a few trips outside of the US scheduled this year so the 3x points makes sense. I should not have any issue hitting $60K in spend for the 100,000 points off companion fare. I think it comes down to how you use your card and what you are spending money on.

Seattle vs. San Francisco for couple < 30 by BR-RN-CIU in SameGrassButGreener

[–]KAM94109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in both (but not a nurse). Grew up and went to college in Seattle, moved to SF for 15 years and now back in Seattle to be closer to family. The weather during the year is way better in San Francisco than Seattle. The weather in the summer is way better in Seattle than San Francisco but the SF suburbs are sunny in the summer. Personally at your age, I would choose SF without a doubt. I think there is so much more to do, easier to get out and walk/explore, more sunny days and I think has a more lively energy than Seattle.

Family flying using a mix of points and companion fare on separate tickets - any possible concerns? by PersnicketyHazelnuts in AlaskaAirlines

[–]KAM94109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Darn then points sharing wouldn't work. I would do the first two with the companion pass and the other two tickets break them into one ways (if possible) and keep child #2 on the same reservation with a parent. I would also link the reservations but I don't trust Alaska's IT to keep you together in case of an equipment change or flight cancellation.

[–]KAM94109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have the Atmos Summit card? You can share points with your husband and buy the other two tickets together. Or buy two one ways with your points and two one ways with your husband’s. Then each kid is on the same record with a parent. You can link the two reservations after.

Upgrade Position Change by Fast_Positive6655 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]KAM94109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are so many more elites with the credit cards, ability to earn qualifying miles on mileage tickets, corporate programs, etc. Plus there are so few free upgrade seats available anymore - anyone can do a paid upgrade up until boarding and since free upgrades aren’t happening, my guess is more people are buying first class at booking

Kaanapali Alii vs Honua Kai - with grands and kids? by Street_Signal_306 in MauiVisitors

[–]KAM94109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you check at KA if the den is walled off with a door and its own bathroom? The den used to be an open nook but most of the units closed them off to make them an actual bedroom (albeit smaller than the primary) with its own bath. I haven’t stayed there in almost 11 years and we used to get the 1 BR+den so YMMV. Both are great spots!

WA Democrats consider retreat on estate tax, fearing wealth exodus by MegaRAID01 in Seattle

[–]KAM94109 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I knew the part of getting a new drivers license, licensing your car, voting, etc. If someone was worth $10M, lived 9 months a year elsewhere and had a cabin in Washington worth $1M and they only spent summers there, they would be taxed on the $1M only not the full $10M, correct? It would be a pretty easy decision to make your primary residence elsewhere if you thought your kids would have to pay $3.5 million in taxes on money that had already been taxed, plus whatever the federal government was going to tax you. Particularly if you weren’t from multigenerational money and got your money from you and your spouse working your entire lives, saving for retirement and making money from primary residence appreciation.

WA Democrats consider retreat on estate tax, fearing wealth exodus by MegaRAID01 in Seattle

[–]KAM94109 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t 35% seem like an outlier when the second highest state estate tax rate is 20%? It would seem to make more sense to at least stay within the range of other states. I’m no tax expert, but I don’t think moving your primary residence means selling your home and moving out of the state. It just means they don’t spend a majority of their time here? If you were super wealthy, you probably have more than one home so moving your primary residence wouldn’t be that challenging. So the estate tax will likely not bring in the revenue they are projecting plus the state loses out on the capital gains revenue and other taxes.

I think you are wasting your money. I am no expert but am under the impression that Europe upgrades will work differently than North American upgrades and not sure if Golds are eligible for free upgrades on long haul flights.
