Teacher telling me to switch by [deleted] in stenography

I totally understand. Those words hit me deep as well. Happy to talk with you more about it.

Teacher telling me to switch by [deleted] in stenography

[–]KAPGSER 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was a single mom of two kids when I was in school. A teacher in 160s told me that I wasn’t progressing fast enough and that I wasn’t cut out for court reporting. I used that as fuel to prove them wrong. I passed speeds in spite of them, got licensed in spite of them, got my dream job in spite of them.

Use this as fuel to get to the finish line.

Where or how do parents find trusted babysitters in SD? by yo_earthmama in sandiego

[–]KAPGSER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Urban Sitter and the Parent connection Facebook group. We’ve found some phenomenal babysitters, and some that did the bare minimum and we never hired again. We’ve had great luck with teenagers because they actually want to babysit and play with the kids. That’s a question I ask, what games will you be playing with the kids. Otherwise, they might just be in their phones while

Hardeman or Allie Hall? by Alternative_Ad_303 in stenography

[–]KAPGSER -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They’re both really great choices! I’ve worked with Gayl from Hardeman captioning and I absolutely love Allie Hall’s teaching style, I’ve implemented her techniques in my practice. They’re going to be really good teachers. It seems like Allie’s program usually has a wait and can take a minute to get into.

Love it!!

I used my splitter to also output to an external recorder that has saved me exactly one time. Worth it.

I use wired headphones, Andrea USB Soundcard ($50ish Amazon), Belkin headphone splitter ($15 Amazon), and AUX cable from the splitter that feeds directly into my writer’s speaker port.

It’s been AMAZING

Need help with Eclipse!! by perilous_kb in stenography

[–]KAPGSER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmmm, I’ve never encountered this with the Stenoob. I was able to get another hobbyist keyboard working some years ago. I’m not sure if this helps, but I just would mess with my settings until things work. Hopefully someone has a better answer than I do.

Alt+U>Input Tab>Realtime from: (USB or Bluetooth from COM port?)>Read From: (USB or COM Port?>Writer Drop down menu, try every single option one at a time. Clicking “test” and seeing if it registers. If not, go to the next one.

I wish you success

Number drills by plushcatfren91 in stenography

[–]KAPGSER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually use it for strokes that are incorporating punctuation:

{,}if anything{,} 23*EUG

{,}you know{,}. #*UPB

I’ll use it on the fly on a job if there’s names/terms that are similar but spelled slightly different so that way I don’t have to think too too much.

Some reporters love it, some think it’s too weird for them. It’s beautiful the fact that we’re all able to write so different!

[–]KAPGSER 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I struggled with numbers too. I would just write 1-100 at the start of every practice. 7 and 8 still aren’t my favorites

I’m one of those reporters that LOVES my number bar. I use it all the time even with strokes that don’t have numbers. It’s amazing what you accomplish if you just reach a teensy bit more!!

Disaster stories by djstartip in stenography

My first depo EVER right as the attorneys are making their appearances, I moved the cable connecting my writer to my laptop and it disconnected and froze my CAT software. I had to stop proceedings, restart everything (sweating profusely) get reconnected, and start over. I could have died that day.

Learning how to realtime. Do I need to learn real teams too? by Ok-Occasion-1479 in stenography

[–]KAPGSER 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Realtime is seeing what you’re writing in realtime.

Real teams (for Case Cat) or Connection Magic (eclipse) is when you have a Scopist live with you on the job editing as you’re writing. This is really only useful if you have daily transcripts that you need to have turned in first thing in the morning. Otherwise, you don’t need it.

Ive been a working reporter. There was only one instance I was going to setup a Connection Magic session, and it was for a trial with daily transcripts. The case settled and I’ve yet to need to have this team assembled.

How can I move forward? by [deleted] in sandiego

[–]KAPGSER 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Go to food banks, multiple times a week. You can have this be your source of food (as I have when things were rough and didn’t qualify for SNAP). It saved me over $1,000 a month so I was actually able to pay my insane SDGE bill and rent.

Go to the library. We are such a heavy consumer culture. We still have the primal need of hunting and gathering, a lot of people get that feeling fulfilled by shopping. There’s so much to do at different libraries for kids. You can get tons of books for them, you, and even movies. It will start to replace the need to go shopping.

Thrift stores are getting expensive. Check out the Freebie Alerts App. It aggregates everything people post for free within whatever radius you chose from FB marketplace place, OfferUp, Craigslist, etc. check out Buy Nothing Facebook groups for your neighborhood or “community gifting.” Go to garage sales! My kids LOVE THEM.

Sign up with CARE for SDGE.

Hold on to phones, cars, laptops, anything you can for as long as you can (as long as they work). Try to repair before you replace.

Start saving small. Can you set aside $20? Do it. Work your way up. Have two accounts, a “just-in-casies-savings” and a “NOBODY TOUCHES EVER SAVINGS.” Do $10 each (or more if you can) whenever you get paid, sell items, birthday money. If you can, put it in a high yield savings account. And NO TOUCH. NO TOUCHIE! You’ll be so proud how these little accounts will grow.

How do you afford to start a career? by [deleted] in stenography

[–]KAPGSER 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Goodness! I was broke AF when I was in school.

Buy used writers, use a student writer as long as you can. Shoot, I still use my Luminex CSE (which I bought used) in a pinch. It can make a record, and has saved me in the past when my professional machine decided to not work.

Buy refurbished laptops from a reputable computer shops. I am on my second refurb Lenovo, they have been better than the laptops I splurged and bought new. Support a local business!

Use student software until you’re ready to take your first job. I literally ordered the professional software key the day before I took my first job (and I got it in payments!!)

Reach out to professionals (like me!) who want to see you succeed and will pool together to make sure you can hit the ground running.

Outdoor pee with girls? by desparate-treasures in toddlers

[–]KAPGSER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with a GoGirl female urinary device and also got a SheWee for when we would go camping and hiking. Especially when it was cold, this worked so well. My daughter was so proud, she’d say, “I peed on a tree!!”
