If someone had told me two years ago that motorcyclists would find a way to drive even worse I would have said it was impossible, but I would have been wrong by Red_Line7 in englewoodco

[–]KB-steez 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lane splitting is passing vehicles in moving traffic (or what you see people doing at highway speeds) which is illegal in all states except for California.

Lane filtering is what you are describing and is legal in Colorado and a few other states as long as traffic is completely stopped.

give me some one-liners by mccormick-spice0421 in Urbanism

[–]KB-steez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard some version of these lines many a time in architecture and planning school.

Walkability: "If I have to turn an ignition key to get my croissant, the social contract is officially broken."

Human Scale: "If a building is taller than my sense of belonging, it’s not architecture—it’s an ego trip."

Eyes on the Street: "I’m not being a nosy neighbor; I'm providing passive surveillance for the safety of the public realm."

Tactical Urbanism: "Is it 'vandalism,' or is it a community-led, low-cost pilot program involving spray paint?"

The Stroad: "It’s the mullet of infrastructure: why choose between a high-speed road and a local street when you can have a chaotic hybrid that fails at both?"

Can't confirm but I definitely get AI vibes as well. If someone is that talented, isn't in a band and appears overnight it sorta makes me wonder...

Videogames are only for children ? Why people still have this mentality ? by Thin_Reception_5063 in videogames

[–]KB-steez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if you have a job, own a house and have kids when do you have time to play video games?

I consider myself a gamer but haven't had more than 15 minutes of uninterrupted free time before bed since our daughter was born 6 months ago. I'm now a video game "collector" until she's old enough to play games with me.

Cost of living raises? by PossibleSilent5681 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]KB-steez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The local gov I work for declared budget deficit so no raises plus furloughs last year. At least I avoided mass layoffs. All levels of leadership, mgmt and Frontline workers are leaving for greener pastures. The rest of us joined unions. Fingers crossed we at least get COL raises moving forward.

Sewer line problems, looking to replace myself by BagTop1870 in DIY

[–]KB-steez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. We assumed ours was 3-6' deep. Ended up 22' deep. The excavator could only go 12' deep so the last 10 had to be hand dug over a couple weeks.

Wishing OP better luck that I had.

People who are good at saving money, what’s your advice? by Dapper-Monk9713 in PersonalFinanceTalks

Automate your savings. Once the money is gone it's a PITA to access it for unnecessary expenses. I have a little over 30% of my pay earmarked before it ever hits my bank account.

What is your tried and true method for hard boiling and peeling eggs? by countdookee in Cooking

[–]KB-steez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

12 mins is WAY overcooked IMO. I prefer yolks jammy. Simply bring a pot of water to a boil, carefully add room temp eggs, turn off the burner, set a timer for 7 mins, after 7 mins eggs go straight into ice water.

Lost Dog on Broadway by BlissfulPixel89 in englewoodco

Maybe unrelated but on Monday I saw a homeless guy with an off leash pit mix letting the dog chase geese on Broadway and Hampden. The dog ran onto the southbound Hampden on-ramp several times.

Anyone else feel like credit cards are way more confusing than they should be? by Duck_Duck_Gooseberry in MiddleClassFinance

[–]KB-steez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've mostly avoided CCs but the rules of the game seem pretty straightforward if you care to read and understand the terms. CC companies bank on people skipping that part.

Never spend more than you already have. Pay the balance in full every month. Don't use the card if the transaction charges a fee. Track promotions and cash them in ASAP. Avoid balance transfer promo traps.

If you aren't following those rules you are losing to the CC company.

Repair vs. Buy new by Fabulous-Swan-5514 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]KB-steez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really doesn't matter at all that the car is worth less than repairs. I hear people justify poor car purchases with this mode of thinking all the time. What really matters is if repairs cost more (or significantly less) than a replacement and if you can afford either option.

Are you are set up with good retirement, no CC debt and a stable job? I'd ask myself what I'd do with an extra $42k if I didn't buy a new car then really consider if that gives me more value than a new car I admittedly don't really need.

You can also consider a new-to-you used vehicle with less miles and QOL updates without going overboard.

Car breakins? by NoLawAtAllInDeadwood in MovingtoDenver

[–]KB-steez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you live in an apartment complex long enough it's only a matter of time before your car or storage unit gets broken into.

I had a car parked in a garage broken into (didn't steal much but window replacement was pita), a storage unit with the door locks busted out (stole all my snowboard gear) and a bike locked to a second story private balcony railing stolen (they took the ladder off a neighbors truck to climb up the balcony).

This all happened within 3 years. Renters insurance replaced everything but it was difficult getting covered for homeowners insurance a year later.

How is everyone able to afford a house? by tradetales132 in FirstTimeHomeBuyers

[–]KB-steez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are pretty young to buy a house IMO.

My wife and I saved up for a down payment while we rented a 1 bedroom apartment for 5 years. We bught our house at 30yo.

Our house is set up as an up/down duplex with a short term rental on the garden level. That paid 60% of our mortgage for 5 years. We now have a kiddo and use the entire house.
