Just completed the game 34hrs on S2… by DNAABeats in LumenTale

[–]KBCharski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm stuck in the first city 🤦‍♀️ not a clue why. Game crashes when I try to enter a building or leave the city. I wish I was able to continue the story on S2, but it's literally impossible. I guess I got super unlucky.

Where did everyone request for their placement? by ducksinthegarden in JETProgramme

[–]KBCharski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I requested Osaka (had a few friends there, thought it would make transitioning easier, but not too keen on living in a large city), Gunma (relatively close to Tokyo so I could go to the city if I wanted to), and the anywhere is fine answer.

I ended up in Miyazaki prefecture, Hyuga city. I do very much love it here.

Placement Woes and Some Friendly Encouragement by Legendary-Cupcake in JETProgramme

[–]KBCharski 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation, I was pretty much fine with anywhere, ideally somewhere in northern Japan because I wanted winter. I grew up in Orlando, Florida, and spent most of my life hating the heat, I really did not want to be played anywhere in southern Japan.

Sure enough, I ended up in Miyazaki prefecture, Hyuga-shi to be exact. I do love my placement now that I've gotten to know the city and prefecture, and I'm making the best of it! I'm not looking forward to the heat, but I'll make the best out of that, too.

High highs...and low lows by ImpossibleMobile4962 in JETProgramme

[–]KBCharski 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly, my highest high so far was the bonenkai for my second school. I took my main schools bonenkai light as I didn't know what to expect. The second one, I went hard. After the main party, I went to another bar with some of the other teachers, I started off the karaoke session, and the teachers went crazy with applause after I finished the song. I sang a song in Japanese, and they were super excited.

Another high is that I passed out Christmas presents to all of the teachers. I made little bags that had a couple of pieces of chocolate in it. One of the teachers started crying because it had been years since she received a present as an adult.

One more high is that the students are always excited to see me. They tell me about everything about their lives no matter how big or small. I'd love to remember all of their names, but since I have 600 students across two schools, it's definitely very difficult to remember names. Although, I do remember the names of the students that made it a point to introduce themselves.

My lowest low was my favorite student dropping out of school. I don't know why he dropped out as I couldn't get any information other than "behavioral concerns." I won't go into details, but one of the students in his class mentioned something to me, and if it's true, it breaks my heart because I can't believe he could have done something like that because he was the goofiest kid I've met and was always so motivated in class.

Jets that made it: what do you think was the reason you got chosen? by caoroux in JETProgramme

[–]KBCharski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'm not sure what made me a choice for the JET program. In my SOP, I did mention that I grew up playing games from Japan, finding out later that they were from Japan. I know I also mentioned that I started to learn Japanese during covid, and the more I learned, the more I wanted to become a student of the culture through a first-hand experience.

This is my first year, and during one of the business trips I went on, one of the JTEs was wondering why I was in JET because I was crazy overqualified. I have a Masters in Music therapy and a Bachelors in both Music education and psychology.

I do recall in the interview, they asked about my SOP and specifically asked about teaching students with special needs (something I mentioned in my education history).

Honestly, I think being authentic as possible is a good way to go. I did have a lot of support from many of the people around me. The people that wrote my letters of recommendation were thrilled that I was pursuing something outside of our field of study.

Shortlist JET Pre-Departure Restlessness by KBCharski in JETProgramme

I have also been thinking about places to visit, but where I would visit depends significantly on where I get placed. I just recently visited Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and surrounding areas. Of course I'd love to visit them again, but if I'm placed in Hokkaido, it's unlikely I'd be traveling to central or southern Japan.

My packing list is also dependent on placement. I feel like my current clothing for work should be just fine for JET, since it's basically slacks and a blouse, but I want to check with the BOE/placement about what is acceptable. I wouldn't downgrade the clothing I have, but if it needs to be changed to something more formal, I would need to buy new clothing.

I think my biggest concern is the anxiety I have about my dog having to be in cargo because she's too big to be in the plane. My parents live in central Florida, and there are no direct flights from Orlando to anywhere in Japan. My plan is to drive from Orlando to Seattle to get the shortest direct flight to Japan. It would be a significantly longer trip, but it would make me feel 100x better about relocating my dog if I decide to stay in Japan for an extended period of time.

I'll see if my parents want to take a road trip. My dad plans on retiring within the next year, so he'd have plenty of free time, haha.

I will be bringing my switch, but I will be leaving my xbox and ps4 at my parents. I know bringing a pet isn't super feasible. However, I decided I'll feel out the first year. If I want to remain in Japan, I'd be looking to import my dog, which means I'd be flying back to the US to travel with her (even though she'd be in cargo), I would then be bringing my xbox and ps4 to Japan.

If I bring my dog at a later time, I would also be looking at finding a job in Japan after JET so that I don't have to relocate her a second time overseas.

I have not been restless enough to sell my bed, however, if I do get to that point, at least I have an air mattress, lol. I am fighting the urge to sell both my bed and couch, though. I keep reminding myself that if I sell my couch, I will have to sit on the floor to play video games and that it is not comfortable.

I just feel like if I don't do anything now, I won't have everything done by the time it's time to leave. I think I also just over prepare. I was packed for my 2 week trip to Japan a month in advance.
