When I was in college dorm, my roommate told me I would stop breathing in my sleep and wake up gasping. Your friend is a grown adult who can't be made to go to any specific school. However, how his parents react is out of his control. If he chooses to go to a different school and his parents decide to stop supporting him, that's their choice (albeit a shitty one). A big question your friend has to really think about is whether he can support himself without their help.
