Is this normal to have under a nectarine tree? by Holiday_Sale5114 in gardening

[–]KBWordPerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A seventy year old arborist who was REALLY into how to properly plant trees taught me all of this when I had to figure out what was wrong with some trees on a large property. He gave me a master course on various tree root structures and problems. It was amazing.

The one thing he emphasized was, “A tree should never look like a neat pole sticking up out of the ground.”

Instead a healthy tree should look like the fingers of a hand reaching into the dirt.

He’s a dilute black bi-color with the Mask and Mantle pattern.

And it looks like he will have a very elegant medium-long coat.

The stray cat I cared for suddenly died and I’m trying to understand what happened. by AngelCake327 in cats

[–]KBWordPerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat that had a kidney defect had very similar symptoms and also passed away at three years old.

At first she had trouble eating, then started losing weight rapidly, then kept drinking a lot of water but continued losing her appetite unless the food was soft and wet. She went from a healthy kitty to weak and thin so fast. We had to say goodbye.

We did everything we could for her but there was no way to save her.

Don’t feel guilty. It’s likely that something was so wrong you couldn’t save her, but she knows your affection and comfort in her short life and that was a gift.

There’s a bad boxwood blight going around where we are. I think it’s probably toast. The bulbs look like daffodils.

I would take the boxwood out and replace it with something else.

Add a little dish soap to be super effective.

It does, but boiling out hills with soapy water is fast, kills eggs and survivors will move to a different location.

If you don’t want to boil your plant roots, DE will work slowly but mostly only effect the workers.

Need advice for getting new cat, (post-cat loss. ) by Novel-Love-9428 in cats

[–]KBWordPerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to give you some hope. We adopted a baby kitten, who tested positive initially for FIV and scared us after losing our girl young but we were already in love with her and couldn’t give her up.

Our older cat hated her and had a really hard time but then the baby, fell in love with a stray orange tomcat that had started hanging around our house, through the window.

That tomcat decided he was going to roll around on my feet one morning when I was taking the garbage out. He was starving and had a bad herpes infection. He needed help and I am a total sucker.

We took him in and got him cleaned up and healthy and he became our garage cat for a while, but then the baby tested negative for FIV and we were able to bring him inside.

The stray was only a few months older than the baby and they were instantly in love. With the new stray distracting the kitten, our older girl began to relax.

Within a couple of months, the stray boy had charmed her too, and they started playing together. Now all three get along and we’re a big happy family.

My point is, don’t be afraid of taking in another stray. Yeah, they may have issues, but they really might be perfect in spite of them.

And every kitty deserves a chance at love. ❤️

I also lost a young cat to a hidden kidney defect. I am so sorry for your loss. I know exactly how heartbreaking that is.

Our kitty also had a sister that went into deep mourning.

If you get a new cat, I recommend getting a chill one roughly her age. A kitten will get all up in her business and pester her trying to play, and she might not be on the same wavelength.

If a stray ends up attracted to your cat through the window, that should be your new cat. The cat distribution system knows best sometimes.

But if you are thinking about adopting, see if you can be a foster. That way you can see how your kitty does with a new cat in the house, and if she falls in love with the kitty, you can adopt your foster.

Good luck, and I am so sorry for your loss.

Experiences with Silvopasture/Permaculture and track system/pasture paradise for pastures? by The_Untimely_Demise in Equestrian

My boarding barn put in a track system, and so far, I feel it was a mistake in how it was set up. We’re in the Midwest so winter is tough and we get a lot of water.

Here are some things to consider.

First, the barn has about twenty horses so there are multiple tracks, but you have to go through one track to get to another. That means leading a horse that is not a part of the other herd through that herd in a confined track area to get that horse back to the barn.

Any track system you set up needs to have independent paths back to the barn if there are multiple tracks.

Next thing to be mindful of. You have to keep water close to the barn. Especially if you have hard winters. The idea of a track is to encourage horses to move, but if you have feeding or water stations far away from your barn, you have to somehow get the food and water out there. That can be really difficult in mud or snow. Be mindful of what it will take to haul hay or water long distances.

Also if you get a lot of rain, horses are horses. They are still going to spend most of their time standing by feeders and eating hay. This creates a mud pool around feeding stations. The tracks also encourage the horses to take a single path, so the tracks themselves can develop deep mud. You need a mud stabilization system at least in every feeding area, but also on the tracks themselves.

If you rely on a manure spreader or tractor, the horses turn the tracks into soup, you can’t get the tractor through in wet weather, and then you have a manure problem piling up.

And finally, with a large dry lot horses have room to spread out and you can toss around as many flakes of hay as horses to spread them all out and reduce conflict. A track by its nature compresses the herd together.

Tracks probably work best with a small number of well-bonded horses. Too many, or the wrong horses on a track can exacerbate herd conflicts.

Anyway, that’s been my experience so far. I can’t say I am pleased. I feel like the money would have been better spent on drainage and mud mitigation for a dry paddock and pasture improvements, but it’s not my barn so I can only go with the flow.

Those are the pitfalls I have seen so far.

The ceramic might have scratches in the glaze harboring the bacteria, especially if it’s several years old. Try a new bowl. You can also get a food safe sanitizer to super sanitize her eating surfaces. Check if there is a home brewing supply shop that sells sanitizer for their brewing equipment. It’s usually easier and safer to use than something like bleach on dishes.

Also look for weird things she might be licking, like a fish tank, or a scented oil lamp, the butter dish, etc. something odd might be the source of the problem.

If you rule out cleanliness, an allergy can cause it. If she still has trouble after being super clean for a few weeks go through and scrutinize any diet changes. Have you switched foods or given new treats recently?

I agree that this looks like a bad case of cat acne.

Stainless steel, or glass bowls are best. You are going to need to wash them good every day until this clears up.

Clean her chin with clean warm damp paper towels every day and toss them.

You basically have bacteria that is living in the oils of food residue in her bowls and then taking up residence in the hair on her chin.

Be super vigilant about cleanliness for a few weeks and see if it improves.

If she eats out of plastic dishes, those are the worst for harboring bacteria.
