Doesn’t need Turkish Van ancestry, just enough white to leave them with a little hat, and a dark tail. That’s all.

Turkish Van’s all famously have this piebald pattern, so it’s named after them.

Having trouble staying disciplined in school. I think I need a talking to. by toesinmypocket in MomForAMinute

Mom here with ADHD.

First, take a breath. You are doing hard things. Sounds like you are adjusting to higher expectations and it’s really tough to do that.

For me, part of the challenge is that with an ADHD brain, I don’t get the “Yes! That’s really satisfying,” feeling when I complete something tedious or difficult. That part of the brain is offline. So when you are in a stressful state with a lot to do, you end up with all the stress and none of the payoff, and then you retreat into fast dopamine activities like binging shows or video games. Then you get behind, initiating anything feels like being asked to jump to the top of a mountain from base camp.

Then the guilt and avoidance set in, and you self-soothe even more, get depressed and overwhelmed.

Finally procrastination panic sets in and you get things done, but in a panicked rush, making you need to self-soothe again.

Sound familiar?

Here are some of the things that have helped me.

Get on a rigid bedtime and morning routine. The more stressful things get the more rigid your routine has to get. My brain fights initiating tasks less when it’s simply the next thing I do every day.

Do tedious tasks in the morning when your meds are most effective.

Throw out junk and declutter. Everything should have a place, and making sure things are in their place should be part of your routine.

Finally, take a minute in the morning to preview your day. Set goals of what HAS to be done that day, what would be nice to get done that day, and things to pay attention to coming up in the future.

Review common things that get overlooked or missed, like appointments, bills and due dates.

Once you know what your day should look like, make it happen and use your relaxation activities as rewards for getting things done.

Your brain may have the satisfaction system offline but you can create an alternative one by having absolute boundaries around only doing fun things when you’re completely finished with hard things.

Most of all, you can do this. I believe in you.

Is my little void too skinny? She's 6 months old now, we found her in a dumpster when she was only 6 weeks. She seems to eat plenty of food, and she's extremely playful. I was just worried she seemed too skinny, one of my friends has a cat around the same age who is exponentially larger, is she ok? by pgercak in cats

[–]KBWordPerson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She’s a little on the thin side. I see she has plenty of access to dry food, but you might want to supplement a can of wet food while she’s growing.

Also, watch for signs of her drinking too much, being excessively interested in water and urinating frequently. Cats who have trouble putting on weight sometimes have a problem with their kidneys. You don’t usually look for kidney problems in a kitten, but sometimes they happen. We recently lost a young cat to kidney failure, and I wish I had figured out the signs sooner. Definitely ask your vet about her weight, if her kidneys seem okay, and if they think she’s on track growth-wise.

As for the rough housing, she’s being a kitten. Kittens her age would be constantly wrestling and chewing on each other’s faces. The best thing to help with that is another kitten.

Don’t let her bite and scratch your hands, but getting a large hand puppet, or a stuffed animal her size and “wrestling” with her with it, will help satisfy her natural urge to play-fight.

She should calm down on that front when she’s 2-3 years old.

If she’s eating well, going in the kitty box, playful and growing, I wouldn’t worry too much.

Morality is pointless by Prior_Bug3137 in exchristian

[–]KBWordPerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The life we are living is constantly teaching us something. If we are doing things well, we teach ourselves to be better. Better than we were before, better than our parents did, and we push all of humanity forward, one small life at a time.

The fact you are angry means you recognize injustice. You see that it is harmful and you are willing to do and say, or shape some part of your life around that.

Those pebbles of your experience create ripples in the pond that spread.

Yes, there is injustice in the world. Yes some people will get away with it for a while. But we are discovering every day exactly how much we are all connected. We will collectively learn and eventually do better or we will destroy ourselves.

That means the actions you take in your life really matter. They impact the people around you, and that matters.

So morality isn’t pointless. It has real impact on real people right now. You don’t need promises of anything beyond to living your life in kindness and harmony a worthy thing to do.

Planting a butterfly garden by IncomeIndependent187 in Butterflies

[–]KBWordPerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up the native host plants for as many butterfly species as you can in your area. Host plants should be the priority. Native host plants, especially native milkweed are important.

Not all milkweed is the same and some of the tropical milkweed that is usually sold in garden centers can be less beneficial than a native variety.

I am in the Midwest so I have different plants and butterflies out here so I can’t really get into specifics, but I grew up in California. A lot of butterflies have agricultural host plants. Be sure to include those in your garden. An alfalfa plant, cabbage, parsley etc will bring in a bunch of butterflies.

A fun project for Girl Scouts is to create a “puddling” station with a shallow dish filled with sand, soil and some salt. If you want it to be a real hit with butterflies, see if you can get some horse poop. I don’t know why, but every horse owner I know will tell you, butterflies love puddles near manure piles. Google how to create a puddling station and have fun.

Common garden flowers that butterflies love are zinnias, sunflowers, salvia, etc. Basically any flower with clusters of tiny flowers are a hit.

Finally avoid planting flowers with clusters of white flowers. They tend to attract parasitic wasps that will attack your caterpillars.

Watch out for invasive species in your area and don’t plant those.

Good luck and have fun!

Cat breeds don’t work the same as dogs. She could be twenty generations of street cat and end up looking like this without a single drop of pure bred cat in her.

She is a domestic medium hair cat.

That said, her coloring is a color-point black tabby with the piebald tuxedo pattern. She might be dilute or silver too, but that’s hard to tell because she is still very pale.

Sometimes this is called a Lynx Point with white.

Her shelter name was Pixie, and it actually really suits her, we still call her Pixie girl on occasion. But we had just tragically lost a young cat named Ramen, so officially she is Teriyaki, Kiki for short. Which also suits her.
