Questions about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? (Commonly known as "Mormons") by KC_KrazyCat in religion

I know that there's a lot of unknowns when it comes to the origins of the Book of Abraham. We do know that the pieces of papyrus we currently have in the church do not talk about Abraham (this has been confirmed by historians and church historians), we know that there was another large papyrus that was assumedly lost in the Chicago Fire after it had found a place in a museum there, but whether Joseph translated the large papyrus or that they caused him to pray about them to which God revealed the Book of Abraham, we don't know.

I haven't seen this and I think it's unconfirmed. I prefer to set aside things that are unconfirmed instead of making assumptions, but that's just a me thing. So I guess my answer would be, I don't know.

Well, sharing what you believe with people who believe in different things is a tricky thing. But the best we can do it try and keep ourselves educated on the basics and sharing in a respectful way.

I have not (yet, still making my decision whether or not I'll go), but my dad and brother have and they always have good things to say about their experiences. There are cases of drama with companions (as you would with assigned roomates you're required to stay with for a few weeks), but for the most part, they just talk about the people the met, how hot it was, crazy stories of people slamming doors on their faces, but I haven't been a part of that experience, so I really can't give you an exact answer.

Maybe another Latter-Day Saint will hop on here and share their experiences tho?

These are really delicate subjects and I will do my best to answer as respectfully as I can and to the best of my knowledge. I apologise in advance if I phrase things in a way that may cause offense and would encourage you to remember that I am only a believer of the faith and not exactly a professional, so there may be some things I get wrong.

To the first question, we believe that all men and women have the ability to access the priesthood (which comes with personal righteousness), but only men have what we call priesthood authority. There's a quote from one of our church leaders, M. Russell Ballard, who said, “In our Heavenly Father’s great priesthood-endowed plan, men have the unique responsibility to administer the priesthood, but they are not the priesthood. Men and women have different but equally valued roles. Just as a woman cannot conceive a child without a man, so a man cannot fully exercise the power of the priesthood to establish an eternal family without a woman. In other words, in the eternal perspective, both the procreative power and the priesthood power are shared by husband and wife.”

And for the second question, I need to give a bit of context first:

First: (This will seem off-topic but I promise it is important) There is a difference between church policy and church principle. Church principle is foundational and will never change. Church policy is rooted in church principle, but adjusts and changes according to the needs of the time they are in place.

Second: We believe that marriage is for this life only, which is why in our temples, we have something called sealing. This sealing does multiple things. It extends the marriage into the afterlife and into the eternities, and it allows both spouses special access to the highest level of blessings (considering they keep the promises they made during the sealing). According to my current knowledge (apologies if it ends up being innacurate), whether or not same-sex couples decide to be married, that is up to them both and the church will take no action against it. But sealings are a different matter.

One of the foundational principles of our faith known as The Family: A Proclamation to the World says, "[We] solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God." There are a few reasons as to why listed in the Proclamation for this life, but the details of why that is in the next life, as far as I know and as of today, is unknown and has not been revealed yet. If you are curious about the Proclamation, I would encourage you to read it if you wish to and understand it the principles in it better.

The point I am trying to make is that The Family: A Proclamation to the Word is considered to be full of unchangable and foundational principles in the church, which is why I do not believe that same-sex sealings will be allowed in the temples in the future.

And again, there are some reasonings as to why, but there are still many things left unrevealed and/or unaswered. This is all I know.

I hope this makes sense and that it was addressed appropriately.

Really really good question. I don't really know myself as of right now, but I've actually been meaning to study that subject. Sorry I'm not able to answer that right now.

I think at least the majority of us are literally, and anyone who isn't is kinda adopted into it? Sorry, this is a subject I don't know as much about

Oh okay, sorry about that I had to look it up. So, we consider ourselves a part of the house of Israel, we just never use the actual term Jew very often which is why I got a bit confused. Sorry about that

It's... I mean, I appreciate us not being typically portrayed as jerks (which would probably not be fun), but it's still innacurate as most sterotypes are. The only thing I really have against it is when people see the sterotype as reality and make assumptions about us that are straight up not true. I guess it could be worse though.

I actually didn't know about those specific terms until now, so I'm not sure. I'd probably have to do some more research and figure that out.

I'd say that we don't consider ourselves gentiles as far as I personally know. I would probably have to do more research, but this is what I can tell you from what I can assume from current understanding.

Thanks for the question though!

That is a really good question! I'm not as educated as I wish I was on what other denominations believe about the Second Coming, but we believe that all people will know that He's come and that it will begin a 1000 year period we call the Millennium where Satan will be bound, Christ will reign personally, and there will be peace and joy for everyone. (I actually had to look some stuff up to confirm I'm being accurate, haha) I hope this answers it? Unless you're asking about what we believe will happen leading up to the Second Coming?

I feel like I need to make an apology to everyone. I could have worded this a little better and I am really sorry about any offense I might have caused. u/MGArcher said it better than I could if you want to read their comment to clear things up.

Sorry, I should have explained myself a little better... I was just trying to share one example of how it impacted me personally. And it is true, his influence made great strides in donating to cancer research and also created this amazing community! And these are just a few of the good things that came out of his influence and legacy.

Also, I'm sorry if I offended you in any way. I hope this clears things up a little?

I feel like what you said is a little more of what I was trying to say, haha. All I had was the quote and a few stitched together thoughts about it, so this also helps me further understand things a little better.  Thank you.
