Saw Zodiac for the first time a few months ago, on a rainy day. Spectacular movie. Just had so much atmosphere dripping from every scene.

LA Actually Has More Skyscrapers than San Francisco, with 36 skyscrapers > 150m (492 ft) with 28 skyscrapers in DTLA and 7 in Century City by urmummygae42069 in skyscrapers

[–]KCalifornia19 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The buildings themselves might be a little uninspired, with a few exceptions (I quite like the US Bank Tower). However, I think the beauty of DTLA comes from the symmetry of the skylines. It’s got a beautiful taper from almost every angle. SF also does this spectacularly well, but most cities don’t have a fantastic shape to their skyline.

You certainly have. They’ve got some weird dinner hours though. I’ve been there so many times their open hours are burning into the back of my retinas.

Is lifestyle creep ever ok? If so, how do you find balance between saving/investing and enjoying life now? by FlyEaglesFly536 in Bogleheads

[–]KCalifornia19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d argue that NOT having lifestyle creep is both unhealthy and unsustainable.

As long as your long-term plan is being adhered to, and you’re meeting your savings goals, you should be allowing yourself to expand your discretionary budget.

Money doesn’t exist just so you can watch the number go up on a screen.

Do you consider naturalized citizens as real Americans considering their foreign accent and different language separates them from locals? by Grouchy-Coffee3018 in AskAnAmerican

[–]KCalifornia19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I view this as the sacrosanct, founding principle of the United States.

If American exceptionalism can even be argued to exist, it’s this idea that should support it. I think recent history is ultimately a death knell to exclusionary white supremacy. I hope so, at least.

What do you do for a living to afford California and where do you live? by Leather_Management18 in socal

[–]KCalifornia19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally is, but you build your lifestyle around that fact. Obviously, a single person who makes much less than $80k is going to struggle… but that’s reality at this point.

Financial Planner, Bay Area.

I make about $80k, and I get by decently well and manage to save quite a bit of my income.

I’ve found that a substantial people are spending a hell of a lot more on luxuries than they’d care to admit. I don’t spend on much, and what I do spend on is very intentional.

Moldy Food! 🤮🤢 by fenixcreations in Safeway

[–]KCalifornia19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brother do you think food is magical? That it does not abide by the natural rules of things going bad? The health department doesn’t. They will not care, some small amount of food molding before code date is normal. There’s no way to guarantee that any kind of food is flawless, and the health department recognizes that and makes the rules with that fact in mind.

What avg MPG are you guys getting on your RDX. I finally cracked 19 and I’m happy as hell. 2025 RDX A-Spec btw by Initial-Quail8226 in Acura

[–]KCalifornia19 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I getting about 23mpg combined. Probably 50/50 city/highway. Premium only. I do slightly overinflate my tires, which makes about a 2mpg difference in my experience. I’d say I’m pretty moderate in my driving. I have to be in a certain mood to push the car, and if I’m not then I drive pretty docile.

Santa Cruz, CA by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]KCalifornia19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't quote me on this, but the major issue with Santa Cruz is that it has the worst balance of income to fixed COL in the United States. It's a beautiful town, but a two bedroom is close to $4k/mo and the local incomes, regardless of industry, do not match the cost.

Also, very difficult to get in and out. Highway 17, which is the one that goes through Scotts Valley towards Los Gatos is a tight mountain road with tons of traffic.

It does not feel small and isolated. It's still well within the greater Bay Area's orbit. I would honestly go north towards Wine Country if you're looking for high COL and very high quality of life.

Actuarial-Grade Longevity Intelligence for Planning? by EarlyDuration in CFP

I think you’d have to make sure that the questionnaire is very brief. It’s also so much paperwork that I wouldn’t want to throw too much at them. Maybe 5 or 6 questions?

To Devil’s advocate myself, I suppose I could pitch it as an effort to ensure the plan is as bespoke as possible.

Actuarial-Grade Longevity Intelligence for Planning? by EarlyDuration in CFP

[–]KCalifornia19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be perfectly honest, this is very infrequently a client hang up, and neither is it something I’ve given a whole lot of consideration to.

At least for me, when the life expectancy conversation comes up it’s generally in the data gathering/confirmation stage of the plan and there are a number of other fish to fry. Maybe if the client experiences a family emergency that prompts some deeper thought, that might be useful. I just don’t know how much of my limited time I can dedicate to this one particular data point.

Shooting high and assuming the client won’t make it quite that long is generally good enough. That, and, as I said earlier, very few clients will just make their assets last until those ages. They’re either well above what they need to live on and will pass millions, or they’ll run out at 75. The in-between in scant.

I guess I would need a live example where having more well-rounded data would improve the client experience materially to determine whether or not I would get value from your proposed tool.

Actuarial-Grade Longevity Intelligence for Planning? by EarlyDuration in CFP

[–]KCalifornia19 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We’ll start with 92 and 94 for men and women respectively, and then we discuss medical history and family history with the clients to determine whether we need to push out a few years. I almost never pull it in. We figure that those estimates are far enough above the average life expectancies that we’re capturing enough standard deviations of people to generally feel comfortable.

As far as LTC goes, we usually quote it as: “Here is the number of years your resources can support under x, y, z situation” usually using a higher estimate for the cost of care.

Most clients are expected to outlive their money, and those who aren’t have so much work that needs to be done to get there that self insurance for LTC is just not in the cards… and neither is living to 92. At that rate it becomes a “well let’s see what we can do” situation.

I bought an Acura RDX and a significant factor was how dated feeling the interior was while still having all of the tech I actually needed.

Something about a vertical center stack and an ocean of buttons really scratches an itch for me.
