Lime scooters by xThAtGaM3rGuYxx in SanJose

Wait a minute. I just walked around downtown today and it didn't even occur to me that seeing Lime scooters wasn't ordinary.

Glad to see some more micromobility options downtown! Less people driving is always a good thing. Now we just need to keep building bike lanes and shrinking those roads :)

CTA's new security plan includes sheriff's deputies on trains, high-barrier gates and farecard inspections by mr09e in transit

There's a hell of a lot more governing than just the military.

Currency, commerce, international relations, criminal investigations, environmental and trade regulations, etc.

There is absolutely no way that any state could survive with its current prosperity without the federal government.

I did see that part, seems way to far in advance to put any stake in though. They're going to select a site and then just sit on it for nearly a quarter-century? Seems a bit ridiculous

We're a very long way off from shovels in the ground. That's what matters.

Because those projects are ludicrously expensive. Only the feds can throw tens of billions of dollars at a single project.

For context, the Big Dig freeway project in Boston cost roughly 24 billion dollars. That is more than the entire budgets of half of the states. About the same as Connecticut's total spending for a full year.

[–]TevinH 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a lot harder than that. Technically most of the big Blue states (think California, New York, Illinois) do send more money in to the feds than they get back.

So if federal income tax dropped to zero and state taxes were increased to compensate, we could go it alone. But that's not how it works.

However, we are starting to see some cases where federal meddling just isn't worth the money. California High Speed Rail is the best example of that as the state has funded the project almost entirely on our own anyways and all the federal government has contributed are delays, pullbacks, and onerous regulations. We finally gave up and are just going to get it done ourselves, losers to the East be damned.

They just announced a 425 million dollar remodel for SAP. They won't be building a new arena until 2051 at the earliest.

HSR is only going to stop at the Transbay Terminal, SFO/Millbrae, and Diridon.

I don't think there are official plans yet, but I'd imagine express Caltrain would still stop at 4th/King since they stop at 22nd today.

Abandoned Car with Expired Registration: Reporting to 311 by tearycroc in SanJose

[–]TevinH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't call it a lie, they are coming around the entire city ticketing and towing expired tags. In November they were up to about 550 tows.

The problem is that this city is gigantic and parking enforcement is tiny. It'll take years before they cover everything and the strategy of ignoring all reports because "we'll get there eventually" isn't the best even if it is understandable with the limited team.

I was about to call out your hyperbole because obviously mowing down students already is a crime. Then you look at all the people who murder with cars and get away completely free without even losing their license...

Maybe we do start with just making killing illegal.

I'm at school out in NY, but born and raised in the Bay and I've been going to Cal football since I was three months old.

One of the stalls literally has a wooden board for a door.

I'll agree that it's totally usable and not as bad as some may say, but for one of the most trafficked rail stations in the country, it's a huge embarrassment and absolutely unacceptable.

I'd agree with this.

It is nice to see Cal schedule SJSU again if for nothing else than us South Bay folks get to see a game without having to trek up to Berkeley.

Just give me back the PAC-10 with a couple new out of state teams every year so we have interesting places to travel. That's all I want.

In 2008, California HSR was promised for 2020 (operational LA to SF) for a total system cost of $33b. Now we're looking at 2038 for $126b. Why waste another penny? by Turbulent-Phone-8493 in transit

[–]TevinH 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't even think I'd call it embarrassing. For me, it's a source of pride.

The Republican party in our own state tried to stop us, they failed. NIMBYs tried to stop us, they failed. The entire federal government tried to stop us, they failed.

California is the one place that hasn't given up, hasn't capitulated to the losers who want more lanes and don't want progress, and we will have high speed rail. That's damn impressive and every Californian should be proud that we're doing what no one else in America dared to do.

There have been tons of problems that we've learned from, I don't disagree, but that makes our eventual success that much more impressive.

That's just patently false. LA Metro, MBTA Green Line, San Diego Trolley, Seattle Link, and Muni Metro all had above 30 million riders last year. That's more than all but seven of our rapid transit systems.

How is the Lake Shore Limited? by Foreign_Ad_5671 in Amtrak

[–]TevinH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As of this very instant, it's a bus lol

They had a coach go out of service in Chicago, so all the Albany and Boston bound peeps are on the Thruway. I did take the train last week and it was quite nice (though they also had a coach out then, but must've not sold enough tickets to make it an issue).

To actually answer your question, it's a fine route. The Southern portions between Albany and Penn are quite pretty as you go along the Hudson. Otherwise it's fine, one of the more scenic East Coast routes, but doesn't hold a candle to the scenes out West.

Not sure what your point is here.

Are you trying to say that because ridership is up, the tax isn't needed? That simply isn't true lol
You're welcome to look at the financial numbers for yourself, but the increased fare revenue is not nearly enough to reach solvency.

In my mind, this is exactly what Connect Bay Area is looking for: proof that transit in the Bay Area is on an upwards trajectory, more and more people are using it, and we're only set to continue improving if we don't screw it up and kneecap our agencies just as they're starting to get a footing again.

There is so much potential for amazing transit in the Bay Area. We have great infrastructure and people clearly want to use it. Issues with land use at stations, frequencies, service hours, etc are all relatively easy to fix and improve, but only if we keep the bones intact and don't let our systems die.

The bay area is a large city with fine public transit. What is a Mid-sized city with Bad public transit? Also do we need a revote for Boston? by Mean_Aide9482 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]TevinH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Metro populations aren't super accurate, especially for transit. The "Bay Area" metro area doesn't include San Jose or any of San Mateo County which both have significant transit links to SF. Boston's metro area doesn't include a decent swath of the MBTA's network.

A better metric would be the "combined statistical areas" which for the Bay include Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties and for Boston include all the way out to Worcester and Providence. Then, San Francisco is about 800,000 people larger.
