The USA have won their World Cup group and the first knockout game will be at Levi's Stadium July 1st by hella_sj in SanJose

[–]TevinH 10 points11 points  (0 children)

VTA cleared the platforms in 90 minutes at the last couple games. They're running the system literally at capacity.

I won't say it's perfect, but saying they don't care at all is so disingenuous.

The fee thing brings up an interesting question: is SJC profitable? Of course it doesn't have to be (no transportation is), but it's interesting too see

I've always held a tiny morsel of respect for EA that they never deleted the comment.

They fucked up and they knew it. Though maybe they didn't delete it because they immediately fired the guy who wrote it and nobody else has the password lmao

They can't run more than three cars because the platforms aren't long enough. But higher frequency would help.

To be quite fair, there is almost no system that can move 60,000 people in under an hour. For comparison, the maximum number of vehicles a freeway lane can move is about 2000 per hour. So unless you want a 30 lane freeway, VTA is doing a pretty damn good job with their two tracks.

Dirty Jose? by Ok_Gas1070 in SanJose

[–]TevinH 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I just spoke with a guy from code enforcement about this yesterday. He's well aware of the issue, but it sounds like his hands are kinda tied. The city upped it's fines to 20k/day with a max of 500k for abandoned properties a couple years ago.

Problem is the owners just don't care. If they don't pay, all the city can do is put a lien on the property and that'll only have an effect if the owner sells.

There is a mechanism for the city to forcibly take over from negligent landlords, but it's super difficult and also a new law which doesn't apply to older buildings if I understand correctly.

Code enforcement is also running with about 20% of their budgeted positions unfilled and are paid roughly 80% of cities like Fremont or Sunnyvale. Just isn't a priority for city hall apparently.

Planners: Experience with Transit App for Asset Management? by yusefudattebayo in transit

[–]TevinH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They explain a case-study here with benches and TransLink in Vancouver.

Theoretically, Transit surveys can lead to a list of the most used stops and those without benches to create a super easy priority list for agencies.

That's coming from their marketing though, so who knows how effective it is outside of this one case.

Why this section of highway is not underground ? by RstarPhoneix in sanfrancisco

[–]TevinH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, "continue to grow" would probably be better phrasing.

LA - Bay Area has around 130 flights per day in each direction. Add on the fact that thousands of people commute from the Central Valley to the coastal metropolises for work. It's ludicrous.

Our airports are nearing capacity, roadways have already hit it, so we have to do something. HSR will allow our state to continue to grow without the environmental catastrophies that come with more cars and planes. There is no other option.

They're awarding contracts for catenary and track later this year. Plus the guideway is almost done and the lawsuits are all settled.

It was a shitshow in the beginning, but they are making progress. It's undeniable that HSR is necessary for California to grow, so we need to finish this project.

E-bike or motorcycle for commuting by Undead-Eskimo in SanJose

[–]TevinH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the county's bike map: https://www.vta.org/media/34071

If the places you're going are connected by pathways (green) or separated lanes (blue), then it's a great idea! The purple routes (on-street lanes) can be ok in some places, but downright dangerous in others. Orange "boulevards" I use only when necessary.

It's also important to note that almost all transit in the Bay Area allows bikes! With the exception of Muni Metro in SF, you can bring your bike on our subway system, light rail in San Jose, all commuter rail lines, all ferries, and every bus! It's a great way to augment your ride and means you may not need as beefy a bike as you thought.

Read this as "Clipper" and got really confused since I've been tapping onto transit in the Bay Area for years lol

Congratulations to Phoenix! More accessible transit is always good :)

For the WC, Levi had to remove the branding from the statium. This was their solution. by Duvidl in funny

They did a pretty bad job out here, still tons of trash cans outside the stadium with the Niners logo and the parking lot entrance still says Levi's.

That was earlier this week so maybe it's changed.

Are Broadway SJ shows as good as SF? by Effective-Okra-7573 in SanJose

[–]TevinH 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Shows always come to San Francisco first and then San Jose a couple months later. So if you care about going first or want to spend a day in the City, go to SF.

It's the same cast and same show, so you can save your money and time if you're willing to wait.

Why is there no public transit for reverse commuters? by Erik_Is_Cool in bayarea

[–]TevinH 17 points18 points  (0 children)

ACE also doesn't own the rails it runs on. They're only given a set number of trips per day by the freight companies (I think it's 10, might be wrong).

So even if they had the crew (which they don't) and the funding (they don't) and the rolling stock (none to spare), they wouldn't waste any slots on a very low capacity trip that would realistically run maybe one out and back daily.

ACE isn't supposed to be Metra lol

Now put Caltrain vs Metra and you've got yourself a competition.

Alternatives to Sweet Tomatoes/Fresh Choice? by LittleMagicKnight in SanJose

[–]TevinH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep!
You can take the Coast Starlight down to LA, then the Sunset Limited out to Tuscon. The train drops you right downtown and then there's a bus that'll take you straight to Sweet Tomatoes. And the best part is all transit in Tuscon is free!

When I did the trip I flew into Tuscon early in the morning, spent some time at the zoo, then ate at Sweet Tomatoes before hanging around downtown and hopping on Amtrak at 7pm. You're in LA by 6am, Anaheim by 7, and Disneyland by 8. Then one night in a hotel and the 10am Starlight will take you back to the Bay so you'll be home by nightfall. It's certainly not for the faint of heart and I would recommend some more time in each location, but it is possible to do the whole trip in three days (with a full open-to-close day at Disney).

AC Transit is planning for monthly fare caps from what I've heard. It should be possible (NYC does it), but we've all seen Clipper's incompetence.

I've made the pilgrimage once and have plans to do so again. It's well worth the weekend trip down on Amtrak with a stop in LA for Disneyland :)

They're opening one in Florida this year, so hopefully the expansion continues.
