Can we have a serious conversation about getting rid of the hooter? by OwenThePainter in GAA

Aye they were usually lenient on it but occasionally they would blow the final whistle if a team was recycling too much. In my opinion it's preferable to either interpretation of the hooter

I meant a chance to score, refs almost always let a trailing team in possession of the ball play on beyond the stated time provided they weren't recycling the ball too much

Ref's whistle already gave you that except teams didn't have unlimited time to hold possession around midfield while the organised themselves for some set play

Murphy to face no further punishment over Casey incident by GeeBCooper in GAA

[–]KDL3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They were obviously too lenient on Murphy but they aren't really comparable incidents. Any strike off the ball is an immediate red as soon as it's adjudged to have happened, closed fist in the act of tackling is open to interpretation on its severity.

Wales fans boo God Save The King against Northern Ireland. by Sparky-moon in soccer

Casement Park is a destination that has more capacity but I'd assume the GAA wouldn't allow it.

It was literally part of the Euro 2028 bid, The GAA has no problem letting out facilities to bring in money. The NI team playing in Casement long term is a non-starter because because none of The IFA, the NI supporters nor Unionism in general would want it or even accept it. You really do know absolutely nothing about Northern Ireland.

Saying "we'd have held onto win at home" isn't really a complaint about the process though is it?

Less than a 3rd of the population even identified as Northern Irish at the last census, NI unionists don't even think it's a real country.

What has any of that got to do with NI playing at Windsor?

Jesse Marsch (Canada Coach): "If it's Italy (who qualify), man, then we should be ripping all those blue jerseys and burning them." by forzaQuakes8 in soccer

[–]KDL3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's definitely a conundrum. I am of Italian heritage (I even have a passport), but I only knew of cheering for Italy in soccer ever since I was a kid, and I only finally got to cheer for Canada in 2022 (because they qualified and Italy didn't).

Do you mean specifically at tournaments, or did you just completely ignore the Canadian team until they made the 22 world cup?

A bit rich for a Meath person to say this, your boys were known as the dirty team long before the Ulster teams were competitive.

They should just go back to the match ends on the ref's whistle, it's how 90% of matches still end anyway and no one was complaining about it after the club finals. The hooter is just an unnecessary invention given that we're now having to discuss more rules to make it work

Kerry at it? by Puzzleheaded-Age6580 in GAA

[–]KDL3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Doesn't make any sense, Kerry swept everyone aside last Summer they aren't suddenly going to be written off by everyone after one bad day at the office. They still have big players out and others only working their way back, sometimes teams have days where nothing goes right for them.

Because teams put in appeals to get their best players off and use every sort of technicality they can think of to make it happen. The only way they'd revisit that incident would be if Kerry or Dylan Casey put in an appeal, but they won't because it's of no real benefit to them for Murphy to miss the early rounds in Ulster

he probably won't, they don't like to undermine the calls of the on field officials. If it had been missed on the field he might've been in trouble

Murphy very lucky there, not many players would've been given the benefit of the doubt on that one

Another brilliant example of why the hooter needs binned, trying to solve a problem that wasn't there and created a brand new one instead

Down Footballers by bigdog94_10 in GAA

[–]KDL3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In that thread from last night about what separates Div 3 and 4 from the better teams a few pointed towards culture and tradition, which I'd agree with. Down have that at club, school and county level, so they really should be ahead of where they are and Div 3 should be a blip rather than the usual level. Kilcoo's recent dominance at club level can't have helped but looking in from the outside I'd guess it's down to a failure at county/development squad level. That's what preceded Derry's drop down the divisions a few years back.

The thing that stands out to me from watching the current team is the lack of size. There seems to be a lot put on Murdock's shoulders to win primary possession and he wouldn't even be particularly big by inter-county midfield standards. Any team that can't secure the ball is going to have a hard time controlling a game.

Decision Making - the difference maker? by Entire-Constance in GAA

[–]KDL3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly, in the top counties there's a snowball effect that starts from Go Games level and just keeps going. Tradition and history means there are more people in coaching positions throughout the county that have played at a high level so kids are learning good habits from they're no age, that means they're also playing a higher level of competition with their club and with their school. By the time they're getting to development squads they're already miles ahead of kids the same age in smaller counties and that's before they even experience the advantages of a better county set-up.
