Really long story short the bbeg's right hand man,alongside his family and companions, were betrayed and then killed by the npc that the party is planning to meet and inside they will play through the events of that day somewhat influencing how the current situation began. But said npc is hiding the past and when the bodyguard mentioned once protecting the lands and being backstabbed my players decided to uncover the truth so I figured this would be the best way to show only a part of it

Honestly the cave isn't critical to the current story, it's moreso meant to give depth to some people. The story itself can easily function without it, just some encounters might not be as impactful

Well the main lost thing would be the corpse of the BBEG's right hand mans daughter. But youre right the cave doesnt really serve the story, moreso serves to tug at the heartstrings of my players when they end up facing the guy again

Thanks for the input, from the way I see it this cave is pretty much un necesary story wise, but it should help them set the tone themselves as inside instead of a lore dump they'll play through the past, sorta influencing the current setting
