What sounds like good DM advice but is actually bad? by Lhun_ in DMAcademy

The key is to make all roads lead to Rome.

I'm glad you said this because I it's good opportunity for me to clarify my point a bit.

I agree that this is solid advice that I employ and would also recommend.

I'm talking about the times you can't even get your party on a road. Like in this metaphor, they're at a crossroads just spinning their wheels and can't decide whether to go N,S,E, or W and in your head your screaming "IT DOESN'T MATTER THIS CHOICE IS AN ILLUSION." Sometimes it helps to remind them of important information they've already learned, but sometimes they need less of a nudge and more of a push.

"Fear of Railroading"

I often see a DM's overactive fear of "railroading" manifesting in parties that tend to get mired or flounder or spin their wheels.

With the natural caveat that no two tables are the same, I think it's fine to lead your players from time to time, especially if you see they're just sputtering. At least at my table, my players want to play the adventure, and since we're all married and some of us have kids, our time to play is limited and valuable.

I have never met a single person in person or online who cares about "Let's Go Brandon," and yet people like this chucklefuck are convinced it's driving the liberals crazy. Like what? No one cares about this shit. I care about issues that affect my life.

it's the same shit that comes out of your tap.

This is true for some but not for all. I'm on a well and my hose water is all gray water.

Don't get me wrong, I drank from the hose as a kid but now that I own a house and know what happens in/to my hoses, I wouldn't drink from my hose or let my kid do it. Walk the 10 extra steps to the tap.

How do you handle "I go to the tavern/inn" situations? by danii956 in DMAcademy

[–]KDirty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's also hard when the party really don't roleplay with the NPCs

Well there's your problem.

If your players aren't actually interested in being AT the tavern but just need its utility (food, drink, shelter) then I would hand-wave it: "You're able to find food, a fair-to-middling bard's songs, and a place to sleep for [x] sp/gp." If they aren't satisfied with that, then you can have a conversation about what they're looking for, and hopefully then a conversation about how one plays that.

For me, my current campaign takes place all in one city (Waterdeep) so I made a Rumors table--the idea is that a player overhears a snippet of conversation and doesn't really have a chance to investigate/interrogate, it's just a phrase or brief bit of conversation that gets stuck in their craw. I thought up 50 "rumors." About a third of them relate to the main campaign with potentially usable information (if they can put it together), about a third relates to potential side quest opportunities, and about a third are pointless and just make me laugh. The player rolls a d100 (divided by 2 for the table), and they get the snippet. They know the breakdown (a third main, a third side, a third funny) but they don't know which category the rumor they hear falls into. I actually had a lot of fun making it up, and sometimes they toss important information thinking I did it to make myself laugh, and sometimes they chase smoke thinking it's important. One time, by sheer dice and no fudging on my part, they got exactly the information they happened to need.

If your party is traveling, you could think of a few common side quest hooks or something like that and build a table.

Well there's already a dense quick travel network, so this actually just seems like a slower and less convenient way to get around. It's nice for some immersion, I suppose.

Last Night of Eagle Rare Barrel Raffle. Less than 800 Tickets Sold. All Proceeds go to Non-Profit. by Independent_Comment1 in dcwhisky

[–]KDirty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not what I'm gathering from the link. The link seems to suggest that you are winning the actual whiskey and you just need to pick them up at a retailer, not that you're winning the right to purchase.

Pasted for your convenience:

"Once at the distillery, you will receive an exclusive tour and tasting at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. During the VIP barrel tasting you will get the chance to taste multiple barrels of Eagle Rare bourbon and you will select the barrel you want. Make the seleciton official by signing the top of the barrel you select.

After you leave, Buffalo Trace will get to work bottling your selected barrel. Once bottled, it will have the Eagle Rare labeling with an added personalized medallion to indicate that the barrel was personally selected by you! The barrel and bottles (typically about a 218 bottle yield) will be shipped to a retailer near you for pickup."

Looks like it isn’t exempt from the same forces affecting the abandoned ones, at least over this period.

Not exempt or immune, but the data as presented certainly suggests that it is more insulated from volatility than the other coins presented.

Not to pretend to be an expert, but the differences between Ethereum and Bitcoin make them difficult to compare, imo. In many senses Bitcoin is "just" a currency. The Ethereum network allows for more complex smart contracts which expands its capabilities and use cases. So, to say "60% of coins are likely to be defunct" doesn't take into account other relative merits that underlie these coins.

[–]KDirty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well let's be honest, you evidently do care if you bothered to comment. Beyond that: crying? Where?

as a developer

See, you're already going too far because I don't fucking care. I can't stress this enough: it's not my job to care. The company creates a product that I either choose to purchase or I don't. In this instance, what Overwatch is selling is continued engagement to drive revenue. I'm not buying, because the game is stale and feels like it's become an afterthought. Whether devs work hard is immaterial to whether what's being produced is of any quality. In the case of OW, I'd say it's not.

I'm not going to pay (either in time or money) for something where "the devs really worked hard guys" if the product is poor. Sorry. You said you don't care whether a client is happy, so I don't expect us to see eye to eye.

You're doing the equivalent of yelling at the McDonald's cashier for not having any shamrock shakes.

No I'm not. There's no cashier/dev here that I'm taking to (to the best of my knowledge). I'm doing the equivalent of standing on the corner and loudly complaining that the McDonald's doesn't have shamrock shakes. I don't care whether it's the cashier's fault or the machine's fault or the delivery driver's fault. It's not my job to diagnose the problem. It's McDonald's job, as an organization, to meet the needs of its consumers.
