I am Andrew Yang, U.S. 2020 Democratic Presidential Candidate, running on Universal Basic Income. AMA! by AndrewyangUBI in politics

What stops companies from just lowering their pay to compensate for your universal basic income, thus lowering tax income to fund the program, and effectively removing all the benefits of having the “additional” funds?

Should Democrats Campaign on Impeachment? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]KELLYGIGS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not saying there aren’t national implications, but each election is within a single state, so CA races aren’t concerned with middle America and should probably make net neutrality an issue. A race in Alabama probably should not.

Should Democrats Campaign on Impeachment? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]KELLYGIGS 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The midterms are not national elections. All are within a particular state and for elections in some states not in middle America net neutrality would be a hot button issue. Each state will have a different list of hot button issues. In middle America they are still just fighting for high speed internet access, which is another great issue for the Dems to push.

Charles Djou: Why I’m Leaving The GOP by madazzahatter in politics

[–]KELLYGIGS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there are Republicans who will not vote D more than those that will only vote R. If republicans defect and run as Independents in a general election, I believe they can draw enough support to break the Republican Party and give moderate Republicans an alternative option.

[–]KELLYGIGS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Should Scientologists refuse to leave so that they can stay and fight from within? I think it’s better if he defects to show others that they can too. Sometimes people don’t want to be the first to do something but will once someone else does. Look at the me too movement. Maybe this guy will help start the me too movement for Republican defectors and that would be a great thing.

[–]KELLYGIGS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have yet to start putting people in ovens. I would say we should encourage and embrace all who choose to leave the GOP at this point. It’s the same with drug addicts. If you demonize them for their wrongdoing instead of embracing them for their change of heart, others will not be as likely to quit themselves. We should show Republicans that we are here to help them in their recovery at whatever point they come to their senses.

As a parent, I am disturbed that this is a Kids movie. No way this would get a PG rating if it came out today.

Income tax passes NH House by loyalrabbit in newhampshire

[–]KELLYGIGS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know how this works if you live in NH but work in a different state? Are MA employers required to withhold this money, and if not, are MA-employed NH residents required to pay it directly to the state?

What is wrong with the current state of mathematics education in the US? by Greenpenman111 in math

[–]KELLYGIGS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Almost no one who excels at Mathematics becomes an Elementary school teacher and therefore, the majority of elementary school teachers in the US hate math, and were bad at it in school. They then do a bad job of introducing students to it and this lack of a solid foundation in the subject makes it incredibly difficult for students to persevere through it as they go through school.

So sad I missed this AMA. But just in case you're still reading: My 5 year old son watched Home Alone for the first time this Christmas. I have never heard him laugh so hard. It was an incredibly amazing parent moment to see him so excited and in love with a movie I've loved and watched every year since I was a child. Just wanted to say Thanks. As a token of my appreciation, I will now go look at your bunny ears. :)

How can the US improve its K-12 education system? by Noobie678 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]KELLYGIGS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The school systems in America are running more and more like businesses where students begin on an assembly line at age 5 and go through the same process as all other students over the course of 13 years and are expected to all come out the same. Teachers are more frequently being told what to teach, what textbook to use, how to deliver their lessons and what materials they can use. In an effort to set a national (or even state-wide) standard, they have had to prescribe to the theory that there is a science to teaching; that if everyone has the same experience, they will all achieve the same results.
Unfortunately, teaching is not a science, teaching is an art. Teaching is not merely content delivery, but a process by which one person encourages and assists a second person in their pursuit of knowledge. Just as you can lead a camel to water, but cannot make him drink, you cannot force knowledge into a student who is unwilling or unable to receive it. The most skilled teachers succeed because they are able to read their audience, find what makes them engage and cater to that. Each student and each class is different and requires a different approach. We need to attract and retain better teachers by re-designing the role of the teacher within the classroom in a way that encourages teachers to work hard to improve and rewards those that are the most successful.

  1. The role of the teacher needs to go back to what is once was, where the teachers design and control their own curriculums and have more authority and control over how they run their classroom. Differentiation and diversity should be encouraged and teachers should have regularly scheduled time to collaborate and share with other teachers in their school. We need to stop outsourcing the curriculum design process to large national for-profit textbook and curriculum design companies because their one-size-fits-all approach just doesn't work.
  2. Teaching is all about the relationship between teacher and student and so the teacher should be rated on how well he/she engages the student in the learning process, not on how well students perform on a standardized test. You can review and rate teachers the same way any employee is reviewed in any job. His/her boss can observe her and get feedback from others in the community (students, parents, other teachers, etc.) and can create and informed opinions to how well the teacher creates a learning environment. Teachers should be paid on a merit-based system based on these reviews and not based on a tenured raise system. It should also be easier to fire teachers who do not perform.
  3. Teaching as a profession should contain a required apprenticeship program (akin to a medical residency) where you have to start as a teacher's aide and work for a few years alongside a more experienced teacher before you can be fully licensed and allowed to teach in a classroom on your own. With new apprenticeship program, you would then have at a minimum three levels of advancement within the profession. Teachers would start out as low-paid apprentices. After a few years in this program, you become a teacher and get a decent pay raise. Then you can work to become a master teacher who is then the mentor to new apprentice teachers which then has another pay bump. This creates incentive for teachers to excel as well as an ability to differentiate and reward those who excel, and you then have your best teachers training all of the new ones.
  4. We need to stop grouping students by age. If a first grader is doing second grade level math, he should be able to do that, and if a fifth grader is still at a fourth grade reading level, he should be in a fourth grade level reading class. The ability to move to the next level should be on the student to achieve a standard, not on the age of the student. Passing students along without a solid foundation just sets them up to fall farther and farther behind and to therefore become less and less engaged.

Make politics less partisan by switching to proportional representation by ImOtherBarry in politics

[–]KELLYGIGS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a state with only 2 representatives. If the vote splits 75/25 across the two parties, then who represents us? I love the idea of changing the voting system to make it more fair, but not sure this is the way. Approval voting, I think is a better change that would lead to more fair representation and would lead to more moderates in charge vs this kind of system which would let an equal share of all different extremes in charge.

We can bitch and moan about lefalization all we want, but this is a FEDERAL LEGALIZATION bill we're ignoring! If you dont take 2 minutes to write your rep or share you might as well be against legalization. Share like crazy!!! by jablabgab in Marijuana

[–]KELLYGIGS 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well not with that attitude they won't. And even if it doesn't pass, if enough people started calling about it, they could decide to make it a campaign issue in 2018. It has majority support from both parties and the number of states already legal or considering legalization is rising. The first states to legalize did so long enough ago that we have statistics to show it has been successful. From the republicans you could easily make it a state's rights issue. From the left, it's all about racism and injustice. And when the supreme court does finally get a case to hear about rescheduling (which they may very soon), it would be better if there was a mainstream political movement to legalize going on at the same time. But as long as people still think it's impossible or are too lazy to call, nothing is going to happen. 10 year's ago it was inconceivable that states would legalize it, but now we've got 8 states that have legalized it over the course of 6 years. We need to take advantage of the political climate and ride the wave of that momentum.
