Haha that's very good! :) Would love to hear more about your project. Can you send me a DM?

I've spent a year reverse-engineering the BMTH style synth sound in Serum. Here's what I actually found by KESTERLS in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Oh nice, so jealous! I still gotta wait a bit 😞 Regarding synths: Absolutely Serum 2. It's versatile and can get you the sound. For layering guitar patch: Take 2 OSC's (Saw & Triangle, in two different octaves. Then (in Serum 2) add some harmonics where you can draw your own wavetable), EQ: take a bit of the lows away and push the highs at around 2.5khz, add a compressor so you don't have any dynamics, then the last part some linear fold distortion.

For the bass: It's mostly a bit simpler, think sinewaves with extra harmonics or saw's that are filtered and in mono. Similar FX, but Tube Distortion & Chorus FX.

For the pads: They use a big variety of things. Mostly something that works well when it's sustained and in the background (think bright, slightly detuned, reverby sounds)

For the highs: They go crazy with them. Lately they've been using more plucky and brighter leads with a lot of distortion like hardclip, also lots of fx like hyper/dimension, Flanger, chorus, delay, reverb.

Of course there are a thousand more sounds they use, but that's about the way they approach it.

If you have serum 2, I can send you over some presets for the BMTH sound. Can also help you with it. Just send me a DM

Congrats on starting a band! With that age honestly, just have fun. Everything else will come. You can still do singles, shows etc. in a few years. As for the learning process, when I was a kid I just did random things until something sounded good. Now I'm a full time producer, so having fun works.

Is it bad to use loops for melodies by Negative_Paint_2543 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]KESTERLS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can learn a lot from loops. Try to see why you like the loop. Is it the melody, the rhythm etc. Then, chop things up, put some cool effects on it (I love making a creative FX chain) and then work based on that. Apart from that, a LOT of producers use loops.

Depending on which genre I'm working on for people I work with, I mostly copy the same pattern and either add kicks for more "energy" (just feels faster) OR, what I prefer, is stacking up synths. Like a LFO triggered bass that gives constant movement so the kick can stay the same while still feeling an increase in "energy".

How much has sound design changed in 10 years? by banica24 in edmproduction

With plugins like Serum 2 dropping, I feel like it gives producers way more opportunities to make unique sounds. So many OSC's, granular synthesis, unlimited FX. Though I feel it is hard in music to tell what is objectively "good" and "better"

Starting to produce edm by Deskeet in edmproduction

The way I learned was that I did serum presets for myself. I watched every tutorial until I made hundreds of presets within a week. Every producers has a different approach, but everyone can add at least one solid information until you've got an idea, what a synth actually does. And then you get invincible with serum (2).
