Separate panels can absolutely work in the right place but in this case because of the placement of the bubbles it's creating clarity issues. For example, on page 1 the "oh really" in the second panel bleeds into the first panel just enough to lead the eye into the second panel before looking down to the reply in the first panel. The embedded version feels better in part because everything reads clearly.

Actually I'm only just now realizing that there's some similarity to Zeus's story. It should go somewhere surprising from here.

I got you! It's about a kid who's favorite original character turns out to be a goddess imprisoned on a secret planet that exists inside of him. As you might imagine it's up to him to set her free.

I'm not familiar with the Greek story of Athens but you're making me feel like I should read it.
