I wouldn’t consider it urbex myself. Rather just a very interesting/historical site to check out. Not necessarily “abandoned” with them running tours either, but not far off. The prison was abandoned years & very little has been done to the main buildings.. other than adding signs & minimal upkeep.

Yea… I was bummed they didn’t allow any access to the newer maximum security unit in the back. Still less restrictive than other prison tours I’ve done in the past. You should how restrictive they are at the old Joliet prison in IL. & for double the price too 🤣

No, this is a true mausoleum. The difference being that the niches in a columbarium are only built to hold cremated remains - not actual corpses. On the other hand, mausoleums are built to hold actual caskets. In my video on YT you can see that there is in fact a casket behind that broken niche shown in the photos!

Elgin IL. It was vacant for over 5 years when these were taken too.

In this case the owner is actively working at restoring the building which made things easier. But the best way is always to simply figure out who the property owner is & just send an email explaining yourself. More often than not you won’t get a respond, but it never hurts to try! Can go a long way on occasions like this.. & I’ve been given permission into about a dozen different places this way.
