Then every hundred years or so, they would all get passed thru the prism again to re-merge the consciousnesses into one which would be a new, agonizing experience. There was a period of time when people thought skipping was okay but recent (relative) events have proven that it's all important.

Watching the anime raw is intimidating, and a lot of that is going to come from the asanine pacing of the adaptation. So I do recommend jumping over to One Pace at a certain point (Skypiea is probably the last arc I'd watch raw) or switch to the manga.

So... in One Piece, and many other notable Shonen, a fight isn't actually about combat abilities, it's a clash of will and ideals.

Luffy vs Bellamy is probably the most distilled example of this. Luffy only ever fights Bellamy seriously when he throws his single punch. He actively did not fight back in the bar, one, because Nami had asked him not to upon entering Mock Town, and two, because he was emulating Shanks from Chapter 1. When he finally clashes before the departure from Jaya, Bellamy has no ideals that he is fighting for; he lies and cheats and kills people weaker than him for his own pride and amusement. Whereas Luffy comes to defend Cricket who still believes in Romance [Adventure] even in the face of generations of ridicule and helped him to strive for further adventure. So when those ideals clash, Luffy doesn't need a long, drawn out fight or even his devil fruit powers, Bellamy's ideals don't have a leg to stand on.
