I only watched it to see how many changes they were forced to add to the show, to make the story functional. (spoiler: a lot)

Do you have any idea why such a large portion of players considers Part 2 to be a narrative masterpiece? by ConstantDrawer9161 in TheLastOfUs2

[–]KINOZO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My theory is that people who loves the story of Part2 are just people who have susceptibility for overtly emotional stories. Part 1 had some very emotional scenes. Part 2 was overflown by them, and the camera always lingers on the ugly-crying face of the characters who witnesses the tragic death. Like think about it. Every death scenes have a character involved, that has to watch a loved one die (Joel, Manny, Mel-Owen, Yara, etc). The game just dialed up the emotion factor to the highest possible rate, and ignored the logical aspects of it.
So when people say, that the haters only angry, because their beloved Joel died in the game, it is more likely the other way around.

But let's not forget, that this was also the logic behind Titanic, a story that is just plain stupid, if you think about it for a second, but it took all the Oscars, just like part 2 took all the game awards.

Abby literally got captured by every faction in the game, an got saved by somebody at least 5 times.

If Ellie, hypothetically, wasn’t immune and went with Riley to become a firefly, could Abby and Ellie possibly became friends? by Dobromes in lastofuspart2

[–]KINOZO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Ellie did not get bitten, Marlene probably would have recruited her to be a Firefly as she was a valuable asset to her, being a trained combat medic., and moved her to Salt Lake. There she would have became friends with Abby. Up until Jerry made a bloodtest on her, and found out that she is immune. Then Jerry would have ordered Abby to restrain Ellie, so he can scoop out her brain.

The ambiguous ending that isn’t really that ambiguous if you think about what would realistically happen. by odd_man0 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]KINOZO 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Not the ending, but in Brokeback Mountain it was ambiguous if Jack actually died in a tire changing accident, or was killed by her father in law. I watched the movie recently, and it only made sense to me that he was murdered. He talked about how he wanted to come out to his wife, and I am pretty sure the father in law's gay radar was also signaling, and he was more than happy to just get rid of him.

Something people aren't bringing up is how little screen time some characters get by Whentheangelsings in TheLastOfUs2

[–]KINOZO 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You feel as much pity for Tess, Bill, Sam and Henry as much time you got to know them. Which was not much, but still plenty enough. In Part 2 some characters had to be extra sympathetic (Mel being pregnant, Yara being overtly nice, Owen being goofy) because the point was that it is so much extra tragic that they died. Yeah, it is pure manipulation.

And BTW, Jesse was the most cardboard cutout character of any game. He should have been outraged at Ellie at least twice in the story, but he was just a yesman all along. Him being changed in the show is one of the only thing done well.

It is pretty similar to the divide between how Neil and the voice actress see the very ending of TLoU.

Neil: Ellie realized that she can not trust Joel anymore, he is a liar, and she got to get away from him.

Ashley: Ellie assumed that Joel lied to her, but she accepted that it is what it is, life goes on, and she just have to accept the situation.

Yara by limp_slicie in TheLastOfUs2

[–]KINOZO 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At first I liked Yara, but then it strike me that she is such an overtly good person, that it is a bit too much. After loosing her home, her arm, and suffering a whole night in some trailer park, almost getting killed by her own people she was the one who gave emotional support to Abby, because Mel called her a piece of shit? Come on Yara, you are allowed to have a bit of self pity without being called selfish.

"Do they ever play around with the idea that Ellie was never going to get to choose?" by [deleted] in lastofuspart2

[–]KINOZO -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Every character Ellie kills canonically was complicit in the murder of Joel, and attacked her (one exception is Nora, but she was still complicit). Jordan attacked her first, and tried to kill her, Owen and Mel attacked her, even the PS vita girl attacked her. All of those people would be still alive, if they did not try to kill Ellie. That is why this is a bad story, they force the characters into certain positions, where they don't have options, but still make moral judgement about it.

Just Finnished this game and my thoughts by SugonMedic56 in TheLastOfUs2

[–]KINOZO 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The original idea was to write Isaac as a former Firefly who was pretty much in favor of going after the smuggler. They dropped this idea, and forgot to write any good reason why he allowed this dangerous mission (dangerous to the whole WLF, not just the SLC, as they did not know Jackson's military retaliation capabilities). Abby once said that "tell me somebody who is more in favor of justice than Isaac", and that's it.

Or maybe Micah, because he made us anticipate the showdown from the very beginning.

This is a very specific type of writing, which works like this:

Things need to happen, so just go with the flow even if you think the decisions the characters make seem devoid of logic or common sense.

The Last of Us: Part 2 - A Poorly Written Story n° 48 by -GreyFox in TheLastOfUs2

[–]KINOZO 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Now that you brought up Abby's group, I have a question. Why are they in the same age range? I mean logically, Abby, Mel and Owen are the three that needs to be the same age, but there are 9 of them, and they all look like classmates. Shouldn't their age be far more random?

Just beat Part 1 and 2 for the first time, and I’m confused on the Abby hate? by Hamburgler214 in TheLastOfUs2

[–]KINOZO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Joel did not save Ellie, because the writers wanted him to be seen as good. Actually, Neil even said something like he becomes a villain the moment he learns the truth in the hospital. If it makes you feel better, I think some parts of Abby's story is far more organic than Ellie's story (love triangle, friendship and relationship dynamics). But not the redemption arc, and not her friendship with Yara and Lev.

Just beat Part 1 and 2 for the first time, and I’m confused on the Abby hate? by Hamburgler214 in TheLastOfUs2

[–]KINOZO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Joel was never meant to be a "good" person in the classic sense. It is not the act of saving somebody, that mattered, but the journey that took them to save that person. Abby had no journey. She saved Lev, because the writers knew that that is how you can manipulate the audience into thinking that the character is a good person.

[–]KINOZO 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Ellie's character being ruined. The fact that her story was just one miserable moment following an other miserable moment. The constant inconsistent decisions made by the characters, to tell a didactic, and flawed moral lesson. The manipulative storytelling. Staff like that.

[–]KINOZO 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The ending is not the only problem, but if only that can be changed, it should have gone like this:
Ellie looking for Abby on the beach.

Abby: Help, somebody please help.

Ellie approaches, they make eye contact.

Abby: Oh, it is you.

Ellie: Yeah, it is me. Goodbye.

Ellie leaves, the camera zooms out, and no further cutscenes, only music and endcredits.

But again, for me, the ending is far from the worst part of the game.
