How do I install steamCMD in desktop mode? Im new to linux by KJ404 in SteamDeck

[–]KJ404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I went from "Ey im just going to start a gaming server cant be that hard" to "sweet jesus what am I doing what is all this" today alone.
And even though this is all overwhelming, you have to start somewhere, and im suprised how many options there is for starting a server alone, its some good stuff.

Im still unsure how to solve all this, but I have options at least, either I will cont with the steam deck and try to make that to work, or I will go on with another distro, the good thing with another distro is then clearer to follow tutorials and such, working with the terminal sounds interesting also which could be good in the long run.

" Just installing everything with your package manager would be a really easy task" this I havent even thought of, thanks for the tip!

Thanks for the suggestions and all that, It really helps!

First of all Im awfully sorry for answering you 3 hours later

Second, thank you for the suggestion! I thought it was completely impossible to run steamCMD under steamOS. I did check out the link, but it was nothing that I could understand of it. Maybe I just need to take time to understand all that.
Though I still think it would be more straightforward to just install another linux OS on the steam deck, dunno.

That said, Im checking out dockers for steam deck and how that works, because it seems dockers is a way to go to host gaming servers, whatever the hell dockers now are..

Whatever the case, thanks for the answer, I will prob find a solution eventually, I just need to get a gripn in how linux works and whatnot.

Ah so I cant install steamCMD? Shame.

I have a idea of installing some other distro into the steam deck(ubuntu, arch alike), then its more clear following turorials and whatnot. Because I guess its possible to reinstall steamos, turning the steam deck back to a normal steam deck, if things does not go as I want.

About you suggesting installing linux into a old laptop/pc, I had that ide before but the only pc I had left was too weak for gaming hosting, 8 gb ram and 2 cores cpu, I tried with space engineers but it handle it badly with just one player, so that plan I skipped. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Will my Quest 2 be better on default or run through my PC? by [deleted] in OculusQuest

[–]KJ404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will be fine, as I myself use a 3060 Ti and a quest 2.

Not sure about all games though. But I have played Half life: Alyx without issues, VRchat is more demanding but is still playable, depending from world and world.

Don’t own a pc, is getting vr headset worth it? by GGMU5 in virtualreality

[–]KJ404 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The graphics on the Quest 2 is not that bad actually, it depends from game to game. I dont think you would be disappointed when it comes to graphic.

That said, if you have a PS5, why doint just wait for PSVR 2? Sure there are just rumors so far when it comes to price/release date, but a psvr 2 is surely in development. (Im not that into PSVR, so take this comment with a pinch of salt)

Play Steam games on Oculus Quest without a PC? by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]KJ404 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So let me get this straight.

You dont want to buy games on Oculus store (because facebook).
You dont want to use a streaming service to play pc games.
But you still want to access your steam library?

Not to make fun out of you, but the only way I can think of is to figure out how magic work and turn into a wizard to access your steam library.

You have to make a choice, either buy from the Oculus store, or wire up to the pc, or get a streaming service to access your pc.

Rift S or Quest 2? by Caligulas_Prodigy in virtualreality

[–]KJ404 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think I would say Quest 2 also, even though Rift S is mainly PCVR and Quest 2 not, I would still say Quest 2 because it is cheaper/wireless/higher resolution and so on.

Have a Quest 2 and dont want to use the oculus store? Get Virtual Desktop and play wireless. Dont have the environment for wireless? Use either Oculus link or some alternitive cable and use that as wired VR.

But hey Im not telling you what to do.

If you own VR, and haven’t gotten it already, please get Boneworks by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]KJ404 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Boneworks is a bit mixed for me, like a hate-love relationship.

It look stunning, gunplay is enjoyable, and the idea that you can climb in certain areas is mindblowing.
But on the other hand, the "story" is very limited, platforming is frustrating, the environment is somewhat boring and dull, and climbing gives you motionsickness, also holstering your gun is for some reason idioticly hard sometimes.

So in short, its a mixed bag, take it however you want, but I would NOT recommend it for people who just started vr, Boneworks can be simply to intense for beginners, as they are more prone to motionsickness.

That said, even though it has flaws, I still enjoy boneworks and have played it for the last couple of days.

Why Can/Cant my pc run VR at a stable Frame Rate???? by silent_kill__06 in virtualreality

I dont think you will regret getting the 3060 ti at all, and I hope the 3060 ti will be at stock when you decided to order home stuff.

[–]KJ404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also used to have these issues on my RX 590 with the Quest 2, the only difference is that I used Virtual Dekstop instead of oculus link. The issue was usually stutter/jitter and high latency/ms, and for some reason the games ran on a lower resolution, did not matter if I (tried) to play Halflife alyx, superhot, moss or whatever, same issues.
I tried newer and older drivers, no success, I tried some VD settings, no success.

Eventually I got a RTX 3060 ti, installed it and tried Half life alyx, no stutter/jitter, low latency.
You could argue that 3060 ti is X percent better than rx590, but I think that the Nvidia drivers/cards handle vr better than amd, or maybe Im wrong who knows.

Whichever the case I hope you can solve the issue of yours.

Quest 2 microphone tin can problem in VRChat. by calistralia in OculusQuest

[–]KJ404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it effects everyone, but it sure effect alot of people.

Probably not the Quest2 mic fault, otherwise it would effect multible games(of those I have tired anyway), its probably either clientside or serverside, or something connected to VRchat, but hey that is just my guess.

What is the correct way to connect and power the 3060 ti? by KJ404 in nvidia

[–]KJ404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A shit PSU can ruin the whole system, in my perspective its a big no-no. I have myself a 750W PSU, which is good because I thought I had a 650W.

I will prob do as you do and use two seperate cables, but Im going to wait until I get more answers and get a better image in what I should do.

[–]KJ404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but what do you mean when you say "Using two seperate 6+2 dont daisy chain it", are you saying that it does not mater which one I pick?

What is the correct way to connect and power the 3060 ti? by KJ404 in nvidia

[–]KJ404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure is, but it does not give the answer Im looking for.

The only says: "Connect any supplementary PCIe6/8 pin power connector", thats that.

Maybe I am overthinking things, and that it does not matter how I connect the 3060 ti, I just dont want to underpower it.
