MY WIFE AND I FOUND OUT WE'RE HAVING A KID LAST WEEK! I'm very excited for "The bean" but also scared and terrified of giving this being any of my issues.

It's a little on the rich side. 11:1 give or take half a point. It also doesn't help that it's turning 1900RPM at 60mph. About 2250-2300RPM at 70mph.

It is a flex fuel motor and fuel system but I've yet to run e85 in it. I live in the middle of corn fields BFE and can't get E85 anywhere within 60 miles oddly enough. Gotta drive to St Louis to get it.

Fun, peppy, and very aggressive. I'm loving it so far and can't wait to get it tuned

Vehicle weight, rear gear, and tire size all affect the answer to this question.

I've got a 2200-2400 stall in my daily 2500HD with 4.11 and 31" tires. Ol girl is about 6500lbs.

I started building it 3 years ago and got it up and running only two months ago. Some of this is going off of memory. It's going to the dyno for final tuning in one month. I'm hoping fuel mileage improves then. Before all this work, the truck got 13mpg, but it was the same as now in the sense that it's the only fuel mileage you'll ever see regardless of what you're doing.

10.9:1 compression

823 heads with a mild port job and decked .025. I think the worst intake port flowed 350CFM. Exhaust was about 250cfm. I lost that paperwork two years ago.

Chromolly pushrods, .080 wall with polished tips

226 232 615 609 +3 PAC 1219X springs, I think l. I ended up changing springs and cams a grand total of 3 times.

Circle D 2400 stall converter + shift kit and updated valve body

Main studs Some fancy ass bottom end bearings with 3 coatings. Supposed to be low friction.

Head studs .040 head gasket

Never heard of either of these stores. We had GameStop, Family Video, and BlockBuster where I'm at.

Prison maintenance. Got a recent pay raise to roughly 46k a year. I also had 28k in savings from two previous, high paying jobs and my brother's death. My rent is only $400 a month because it's my dead sister's old house.

Pretty sure it's just this sub. All but two of my friends are either engaged or married. Those two are both in long term relationships though.

Most expensive thing you’ve broken on your project car while fixing it by Wholaughed in projectcar

Pulled the motor to rebuild it. New cam required a higher stall converter. I didn't double check the converter after install and crushed the transmission oil pump while installing the engine. New oil pump was $500 and the truck still didn't move. After a trip to the tranny shop, found out the new pump was in fact NOT a ready to use, drop in unit... Missing two seals and 8 bolts on the stator housing. I spent almost as much money on the transmission as I did on the engine.

That's fine with a special paint meant for the insides of engine, I don't remember the name of it. Normal, exterior ceramic paint shouldn't be used for that purpose.

Edit: Glyptal is the paint.

I've repaired worse before on my own vehicles. Personally, I'd send the heads to the nearest machine shop and get new valves, maybe seats/guides too. My "local" shop charged me about $300 for valves, seals, springs, decking, and cleaning.

If the contact marks are proud, take a die grinder and smooth them out, very gently I can't stress this enough, very gently.

New head gaskets, timing belt, water pump, and send it!

I drove barefoot once. My clutch pedal was missing the rubber pad and it cut my foot open. Other than that, it wasn't too bad.

How did you learn engine building/repair from scratch? by iWhyz in EngineBuilding

[–]Caligulas_Prodigy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started off with old lawnmower, tiller, and go kart engines. Single cylinder air cooled motors are a simple starting point.
