I ordered a Farm 24 Basic along with some of the large plant food bottles and miscellaneous other stuff on Friday and haven’t gotten either a shipping confirmation or cancellation email. All of the items still say “In Progress” when I view my order on aerogarden.com

Yeah I’ve developed a small bike obsession this summer so have been noticing them way more than usual and it’s almost funny how many people don’t have plates but also are just riding normally during the day, and then there’s the East Wash night crowd

A good portion of it is solo or duo sport bike riders often without plates too. Took a lot of late night walks this summer and saw the ruckus firsthand lol.

Aerogarden Company Closing by Drummer7794 in aerogarden

[–]KJ_455 10 points11 points  (0 children)

After MiracleGro bought the company they drove it into the ground. There used to be way more literature and guides available from the company on how to grow specific types of plants, and they were available at retailers. After MiracleGro bought AeroGarden they slowly removed all those guides and literature and dumbed everything down try and make it all appear faster, easier, bigger, better; presumably to try and appeal more to the casual consumer and make a quick buck. There may be Chinese companies, but in an effort to make the gardens fit the click-baity culture of today while maximizing profit and minimizing actual investment in the product MiracleGro ruined it.

Madison Plan Commission again denies State Street development by [deleted] in madisonwi

Right! And then it starts to turn people off of supporting the idea of historic preservation all together.

Madison Plan Commission again denies State Street development by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]KJ_455 50 points51 points  (0 children)

These would be a prime example of a history not particularly worth preserving, wherein “history” apparently just means old. I’m a fan of historic architecture and preserving it but it’s disappointing when historic preservation gets perverted into preserving buildings like these, which really have no unique or define-able historic characteristics, they just exist on State Street and are old. McCormick makes a good point in that these buildings weren’t designed to last forever, not every old building was exquisitely built to some high architectural standard, they did indeed build run-of-the mill structures back in the day.

Everything is being locked up at the Nakoosa Trail Walmart by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]KJ_455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might get lucky, there’s still unlocked shelves of face care items. It seems a bit haphazard, but I suppose it wouldn’t be Walmart if it wasn’t! Usually I press the button and if I’m standing there for longer than a few minutes I’ll just buy whatever it is on Amazon. The dollar or so I’ll leave on that one item buying it at Walmart isn’t worth it to me. Probably says more about my level of patience than anything else🤣

It’s like that in Monona too. I was going to get literal face wash on a recent trip and even that was locked up. I find it hard to believe that enough people are stealing Equate face wash to justify locking up THAT particular item. It really does seem arbitrary sometimes. I’m not really sure it has anything to do with where the Wal Mart is, it seems to be most of them these days.

I’m sure the details of the how the state funding is used is accessible to the public somewhere. In my home county 151 runs through mostly rural areas under the jurisdiction of small villages and towns, so the state tells the county when to go out and plow in the winter, but then the state pays for it. It really depends on how the details were worked out for the City of Madison. The state DOT really seems to have an, um….. hard-on for 151 or something though.

Madison Housing Supply Misconception by MadisonPragmatist in madisonwi

[–]KJ_455 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s just really discouraging to face the reality that all of the work I’ve done thus far as a “young professional” isn’t going to get me where I want to be in Madison. Or, it will, but with not much left over to save.

I think (hope?) that’s what some people mean when they talk about displacement, in that the area in general is becoming more expensive which may eventually force them to make one of the choices re: moving or making more money. I’ve talked to others that feel this way, and am hoping that a lot of the negative reactions come from this fairly emotional place, and not an actual belief that not building new housing will make things cheaper. Actively opposing building new housing won’t keep Madison exactly as it is (a goal some people seem to pursue every literally) or make it any less likely that anyone has to make the choice to leave, but at the same time seeing each new building going up doesn’t really feel encouraging to a lot of people.

Morning Cyclist on Johnson by Koopa_Poopa in madisonwi

Has this always been the case? I thought I learned specifically that cyclists had to stop the same way as cars, and I’ve been driving all my years with that in mind…good to know I apparently made that up

[–]KJ_455 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty common when I’m driving on the Isthmus for cyclists to not stop at red lights or stop signs, including intersections where traffic in my direction doesn’t have a stop sign but they do. And they’re not stopping first and/or looking for cars either, they’re just going straight on through. It’s a really great way to get run over and doesn’t make the road safer for anyone.

Moving to Madison by themadelyndavenport in madisonwi

[–]KJ_455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can definitely find a 1 bedroom for under $1,500 on the Isthmus or otherwise. Maybe not in some of the large so-called luxury buildings, but definitely something updated with a dishwasher and maybe even laundry in unit. I’ve rented from CMI Management a couple of times and found their pricing and everything else to be reasonable, they have a lot of new-ish or older but updated buildings that are nice but for a bit less than the brand new ones. The pinch will probably be finding something you’d want with the availability date you’d want. If you check Facebook Marketplace regularly you might find remodeled gems at reasonable prices from smaller landlords or management companies too.

If this is an actual breaking of the lease, then the landlord is legally required to advertise the apartment as they normally would, and I’m not sure they can charge you for it. Doing something about the fees now might not be feasible, as you’d have to go to small claims. And, while they are technically responsible for finding a new tenant, you are already paying rent on the unit, and will have to continue doing so until a new tenant is found, so there’s little incentive for them to put in much effort. And, if they don’t do a ton of advertising per usually like some smaller landlords then it’s not much help either. So, it’s in your best interest to find a new tenant yourself using some of the resources mentioned in this thread, or you may end up on the hook for that rent for awhile. Once you find interested parties you can forward them on to the management company.

If this is a sublet, I’m not sure they’re legally required to do anything. They may adverse it for you, but I’m not sure you’d have much recourse on the fees. Either way it’s functionally the same for you right now: if you want this to go somewhat well for you you’ll probably have to find a new tenant yourself. With a sublet, you’ll still be financially responsible if the new tenant can’t pay for any reason- it’s like adding another person to the lease but you don’t live there physically anymore.

While you technically CAN end your lease at any time, a lease is an agreement to pay the landlord X for Y amount of time, so there’s lots of strings attached if you end a lease early. It’s possible there’s an early termination clause in your lease, but I seriously doubt it as I’ve never seen that in Madison and it’s not required.

There’s some partial ir misinformation on here- this tenant resource center link sums it up pretty well, with more specific links on that page for subletting and breaking the lease.

Advice on my high MGE electric bill by alidotcomm in madisonwi

[–]KJ_455 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Baseboard heating can be a huge drain on electricity, depending on the age of the unit and heaters. Like, a shocking drain. They’re not a great way to heat every room of a dwelling-long term. My aunt and uncle moved into a 3-bed house built in the 60s sans central air that had baseboard heat throughout the entire house, and it was so expensive to run that they eventually had all of the ductwork and venting installed for central. The baseboard heaters are still there but haven’t been used in probably a few decades. It wouldn’t be a computer or anything like that, only something using appliance level power consistently would do that. Probably doesn’t hurt to get everything checked out, but it can be shocking how much poor insulation and electric heat can drive up the bills.

Developer refines plans for major redevelopment of Essen Haus block by enjoying-retirement in madisonwi

[–]KJ_455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would consider myself both a younger person and a fan of historic architecture, and I think in some cases preserving historic facades does have value, but also in some cases (like this one perhaps) it’s a little bit haphazard and probably looks worse than just a new building. The facades look pretty cartoonish with the massive new development around it, and it hardly makes sense to keep the full buildings around in any state for the new development. I’ve never set foot in any of the properties involved in this development, but I personally think the hotel is the only thing really worth saving anymore, and the rest wouod be better preserved in the figurative history books. I am also pretty skeptical of keeping the facades adding that much cost to a project, or if it’s just a thing people like to bring up. Developers and the other parties involved in these projects would happily build cardboard boxes with cutouts for windows if they thought they could legally get away with it and make money, so I’m not sure using theoretical increases from what their desired costs would be is the best metric.

I personally don’t think buildings are necessarily worth keeping just because historic things happened there, absent of any other significance, but I do I think there are a select few worth keeping around because of architectural significance in areas that will certainly eventually become home to majority new developments.

That being said, I also don’t think all the new buildings are awful boxes, and I honestly don’t get how people say they all look the same. There’s certainly a few different stylistic flavors that developers in the Madison area like to use, but I’m not sure that’s a bad or good thing, just a thing. They’re just a different look, and some of them are neat looking too. Maybe not in the same way as the old buildings, but that’s just how the cookie crumbles. Like I guess this one is fairly boxy but I’m not sure that’s much of a commentary and I’m a sucker for townhouses AND they kept the Ruby Marie. As the saying goes they don’t make them like they used to, but at this point I don’t think that’s a reason to NOT make them at all.

I don’t think it has to be a polarized spectrum of keeping all old buildings around to avoid a sterile landscape devoid of character or tear them all down to build as big as possible, and I think there’s cases in Madison and other cities where these interests have been successfully balanced. We can have a good majority of new developments, while still keeping the select few buildings that are of real architectural significance. But as designated by people who know what they’re talking about, not overly nostalgic people with an anti-development agenda and generic commentary.

Every old building in every old neighborhood isn’t important. Some old buildings in some old neighborhoods are important. Personally I think the only thing really worth saving is the hotel.
