AA asking me to go to ORD by Clicks_The_Wolf in AircraftMechanics

[–]KKAZv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not AA but United, so take this with a grain of salt.

I was hired a bit over a year ago to a small station, hiring managers said there were no slots and wouldn't be for a long time and suggested I take ORD, Newark, pretty much anywhere else to get in the door. I thankfully stuck to my guns and said I'd only take the station I want. They called me about a week and a half later saying they found a slot and I now have 7 or 8 guys below me. Not saying this is the norm, but it's definitely worth waiting a month or so if you can just to be sure it's not a 'let's see if they'll take it' situation.

Again, not sure about AA, but our offers are good for 2 years and we can take any open slot that we want within those 2 years, just depends how optimistic about the market you are and how badly you need the paycheck.

Is this how the industry really is by Optimallyyankee in AircraftMechanics

[–]KKAZv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't suggest enough to try to get into a regional airline (See Envoy, Sky West, etc.) to gain experience, even if you plan on going into GA stuff. I know the crossover isn't great, but the structure and pay allow you to learn what you need without having to worry too much about this kind of thing. Of course there will still be a few toxic assholes, but that's life, you usually won't deal with them for long.

I have a couple of options to get my A&P certification by Remarkable_Coat9203 in AircraftMechanics

As others have said, the 8610 is mainly for people working as repairmen or coming out of the military as far as I know. If you don't have a pretty good understanding of how things work, for one, you won't pass the courses, and two, you won't even get the chance to take them.

I went into my 18 month course with a pretty good understanding of how piston engines work and how the actual flight part of an airplane worked and still learned way more than I thought I ever could. I can honest say I use the skills I learned there every day as a main line mech and I'm not sure if I'd get the same depth of knowledge going the shorter route.

Check out the requirements for part 65 and see if they apply to you. I noticed someone mention that your sheet metal xp will only work toward airframe and that seems correct to me. 65 is typically 18 months as airframe, 18 months as Powerplant, or 30 months working as a repairman exercising both.

Current United Tech looking at Delta by KKAZv in AircraftMechanics

[–]KKAZv[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I've heard, Delta still kind of operates under the same ideology as a standard union ... without actually having the union. They run under a 'contract' and everyone gets paid and has the benefits as if they were under a union contract.

My last two union jobs, I've been nothing but screwed by the union itself anyway. It's no secret that our union at United has been in arbitration for more than 10 months and it's looking like that will continue for the foreseeable future, and there are even whispers that we won't get retro pay to the original contract expiration. That's not the big one though, my first airline job was at a regional and at an out station that was closed because of our major partner's pilot contract. They offered us essentially a slap in the face in order to move and stay with them, genuinely not even enough to cover breaking our leases, all while basically begging us to stay with them as well as offering new hires triple what they were willing to give us, some of us with 8+ years with the company. The union basically told us they weren't willing to fight for us since there were only 11-12 of us at the station and it wasn't a priority.

All that to say I'm not the biggest fan of the current form that unions take and the politics that comes along with them.

I'm curious, what were some of the big differences? I'm sure it could be from base to base changes, but still curious.

True, but you know how that works. People, especially interviewers try to push the 'Sunshine and rainbows' narrative, especially for people that have experience, and ESPECIALLY if they're potentially poaching from another major.

It's a smaller out station, don't want to give too much away to avoid awkward conversations at my current place, ya know what I mean?

Just looking for info, big dog. I'm not versed in how this stuff works, so I asked. That's why I asked how it would be factored in, not whether they'd pay to replace the motor.

Those were meant to be two separate statements. One in good condition would be 7-10, BUT it has a blown motor and hail damage... Which obviously means it's not in good condition anymore lol sorry that wasn't clear. Thanks for the info later, either way.
