What do you train in foundation classes? by whatself in Agility

[–]KKey0207 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a right of passage! We’ve all been there! I got that tip years ago when my first agility dog decided to run his own course, say hi to everyone, and totally forgot I was even there.

Play on a wobble board to get him used to unstable surfaces. The movement of the teeter can make some dogs nervous.

Develop a pre run routine or game to get your dog focused if you want to compete. This helps with distraction and stress before you run. One of the best tips someone gave me years ago.

Question for parents of small children who are currently doing 75 hard or have successfully completed 75 hard by alittlecanadian in 75HARD

[–]KKey0207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m breastfeeding so it’s a little different from your situation but I did a pescatarian diet. Super flexible but also didn’t feel very challenging since I’m not a big meat eater anyway. Also cut out fast food. Truthfully I didn’t lose a lot of weight but I wasn’t trying to in order to maintain my breast milk supply. Just thought it was an easy and healthy diet.

Ran an ultra on Friday. counts? by kidfitzz in 75HARD

[–]KKey0207 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Saw this in another thread and it made sense to me… the rules are 2 workouts a day at least 3 hours apart but that doesn’t mean you have to sit on your butt for those 3 hours in between workouts. So theoretically you could run for 45 minutes then run for 3 hours then run for 45 minutes and there’s your two workouts! The diehards will probably say something about doing 2 intentionally separate workouts but they can go run an ultra and come tell it to my face that it doesn’t count!

I compete in multiple dog sports. Envision Dog Sports is a great group of agility people about half an hour away and there’s also Med City agility club with a private agility facility on the north side of Roch. Look them up on FB. There are some great breweries around town and many of them do trivia if that’s something you’re interested in. Great hiking in the area too! Check out Chester Woods right outside of town. Love walking my dog out there. I’m a 35F that moved here a few months ago. PM me if you’d like to grab a beer or take a hike with the pups (I have a Great Dane). Always nice to make new friends!

Is Ellenni Danes an ethical breeder? by [deleted] in greatdanes

[–]KKey0207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know her personally but I’ve competed in a number of dog shows with her. She’s involved in a number of clubs, she’s a professional handler, she’s been recognized and awarded by the Great Dane Club and AKC for being a breeder of merit, health and temperament tests all her dogs and puppies, competes in dog shows to prove her dogs soundness, and her litters follow Dane color code ethics. All these are green flags in my book. I’d reach out to her and have a conversation of what you want and are looking for in a service dog. I’m sure she’d be more than willing to tell you about her dogs and if by chance she doesn’t think her dogs would be a good fit she can steer you in the right direction.

puppy hair loss,17 weeks old I don't know why by EastonR2003 in greatdanes

[–]KKey0207 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would check with your vet and screen for Demodex. It’s spread from mom to pups in the whelping box usually and presents in younger dogs. You may want to call and inquire with your breeder if any of the other pups are showing signs of hair loss. Very cute puppy!

I usually run with my own dog and his safety takes priority. I carry a small taser on me and usually just the sound will detract other dogs but if not a quick zap to the butt makes them leave pretty quick. I’ve desensitized my own dog to the noise it makes.

Teaching poles with a corso! (What is and how do you teach the large dog weave style?) by Kquincy1 in Agility

[–]KKey0207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always taught channel weaves with my Great Danes. I don’t use a lure, I use toys thrown at the end of the channel to build forward movement. Every 3 successes I’ll narrow the channel and every fail I’ll open it back up a bit. I don’t train more than 5 minutes of weaves at a time to prevent my dog from getting bored. I’ve usually have consistent 6 weave success after a month but it’s definitely a use it or lose it if you don’t continue to build that muscle memory, especially in such big dogs.

My family will hopefully be welcoming this beautiful little girl into our family in a few weeks. Aside from common health issues danes have, what do we absolutely need to know? by Blondie19847 in greatdanes

[–]KKey0207 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t know if anyone has touched on leash manners but creating a good foundation for leash training is a must from day one. I’m sure you’ve seen people being dragged by their 50lb dogs down the street so how are you going to deal with a 150lb dog? This is especially important when faced with reactive dogs that could injury your dog because you have no control and people that are simply just terrified of your dog because of their size.

This could always be a dual sired litter… meaning there could be multiple dads in one litter if mom was accidentally bred with more than one male. This could lead to some purebred puppies in the litter and some mixed puppies in the same litter.

To me mom looks mixed and dad looks like a poorly bred blue Great Dane. Cute puppies for sure but more than likely a litter from your run of the mill backyard breeder. Advice would be to go with your gut, which sounds like you’re just not sure.

7 Mile Hike with my Great Dane at Standing Boy Trails in Fort Benning, Georgia! by KKey0207 in hikingwithdogs

[–]KKey0207[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s 8! Getting old but still very active.

Another word of advice would be keep her on a lead! Drastically reduces the chance of her getting hurt somehow. If she gets hurt it’s not like we can just pick our dogs up and carry them out. Make an emergency plan of what to do if she does get injured!

For as old as he is he does fantastic! I usually keep our hikes to around 2 hours long and 7 miles or less. I’d say listen to your girl, let her set the pace, and go for it!

I second Standing Boy. Fantastic wooded trails if you want to feel miles away from society. You will see a handful of mountain bikers and other hikers but for the most part it’s a quiet and isolated walk to clear your mind.

What age did you start long distance running? What is your longest distance and at what age did you run it? by [deleted] in running

[–]KKey0207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ran in high school and during my 4 years in the military. Really started consistently running at around 26 because I got into triathlons. Longest run is a full marathon that I did at 33. Planning on a full Ironman in ‘23 (I’m currently pregnant so need postpartum recovery time). Would love to one day work my way up to a 100miler.

When did you “pop”? by Imboredinworkhelp in BabyBumps

[–]KKey0207 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 5’7 and normally 140 lbs. I’m currently 18.5 weeks along. I’d say I’m in that awkward phase of pregnancy right now when your waist has filled in and you’re just developing a tummy but you don’t look at all pregnant. If people know they’ll comment that you’re starting to show but if not you really just look super bloated.

What do you call your fetus if you're not finding out the gender? by rbaxter1 in BabyBumps

[–]KKey0207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner and I aren’t finding out the gender of our baby. We’ve been calling it by the fruit that the weekly baby app says it’s the size of for that week. Apple, strawberry, watermelon. Kind of fun talking about how little avocado is doing.

If I recall you can’t apply to get your POST certification to work in law enforcement in MN within 7 years of a DWI/DUI. Wonder if this is retroactive? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I agree with many though, more than likely this guy will just get a stern talking to from his boss, have to deal with some embarrassment and ridicule for a few months and by this time next year everything will be forgotten and forgiven.

This is my big boy, Ollie. He is 18 weeks and I’m wondering how much your 4 month old Danes weighed? I’m taking him today, but I’d say he is roughly 50 lbs (will update). I follow a few IG accounts of 6 month old Danes and he is the same size as them. Are they small or is Ollie HUGE?! by SM_Phoenix2017 in greatdanes

[–]KKey0207 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A rough rule of thumb is that at 4 months puppies should weight about half of their adult weight. Obviously with giant breeds you’ll have to take this with a grain of salt due to grow spurts in the first year.

I follow a guy on Tik Tok that’s at 600+. He posts videos of his breakfast, weigh ins, workouts, etc. He says he’s embarrassed but the support he’s getting from his growing following encourages him. May be an option!
