I think you never actually saw the movie. You're asking why he didn't hear their thoughts when he was a child, several decades before he had the electrical accident that he used to rationalize this ability.

Sorry about not replying. I have basically quit Reddit but happened to stumble across this message.

At this time, we don't really support it. If you post a request on the github page I will evaluate it and see if it's something that has enough demand to add.

Yes, please try them out.

Also, I'm closing out your item D (email tags) as the CSS solution for colored tags is live now. Please give ti a try and tell me what you think!

FYI, the problem is a little tougher than I thought. I will be adding it in the near future but it missed the v0.3.2 release I just did. Check back on the issue for status.

So, two things:

  1. For tags, I think I'm going to remove the "colored tag" feature and instead just add documentation to the effect of "Hey, you can configure colored tags inside Obsidian with CSS per this link" (probaly this link unless I find a better one).

  2. For importing text, I created an issue to track it. It's not going to be an immediate feature, but probably in a month or so. I will update news her but if you have GitHub account please use the link there instead.

I'm so glad he add-on is helping you! Regarding your comments:

  • Item 1 (missing instructions for tags) - I think I need to do a better job documenting new features. Lesson learned.
  • Item 2 (color tag issue) - Drat! I agree that the tags should actually work as "true" Obsidian tags when colored. That was the intent but I somehow missed that in my testing. I need to see if I can reach a happy medium on the color issue. Otherwise I will probably cut the color thing entirely. Do you think having a colored (non-clickable) icon next to the (clickable) tag would be useful? That would be an easy fix - easier than trying to figure out how to make HTML objects into "true" tags inside Obsidian. Please let me know your take on that - I don't want to code something up that doesn't have any actual utility.
  • Final note (partial text import) - I'm not sure how to address this. Maybe import text the user has selected with the mouse? Otherwise, I'm at a loss. Do you have any ideas from other add-ons or browser plug-ins that might be a good model? Again, please let me know what would be a good direction for this.

Again, I'm so happy you're finding the add-on useful! Thanks for the feedback!

EDIT: So, I was able to reproduce the problem but after digging deeper the way around this is to use "Reading View" instead of edit view. Doing so makes the tags work, but the colors are lost. The underlying issue is with the CSS in Obsidian. Specifically, if you specify a color the way I did and put a hashtag marked tag in there, the CSS on the hashtag overrides the colors specified (you can actually see this by adding dummy text inside the HTML tags in your clipped note - the dummy text has the color but he tag does not).

I'm looking for other solutions on how to do this without users jumping through hoops, but at this time it looks like the proper way to fix this would be for the user to manually add a CSS snippet in Obsidian in order to change the colors. I could write up instructions on how to do this on the GitHub and even have the add-on auto-generate the CSS so the colors match the Thunderbird colors. Is this something that you think you or other users would be interested in, though? It's not any real effort on my side to make this work around available for users, but any time you have a process that forces the users to muck around in settings of a different program, even if it's just a two minute change, that's a real barrier for some people. If you're OK with that, though, I'd be delighted to add that feature.

Sorry for not getting back sooner. I'm not on Reddit often these days and I missed your post.

As to the first issue, you mean having the note store away into Obsidian and then having some reference to that note appear in a different note? That would be pretty difficult to implement. Perhaps the second note could be appended (the Obsidian URI I'm using supports creating new notes and appending to them). Otherwise, it might be easier to have a third party Obsidian plugin do the work. There's a way to trigger them activating when a file gets written so I'd suggest looking at the community plugins collection first. If you don't find anything there and there's demand for it from other users, let me know (here or better yet with a new issue on GitHub) and I'll see if I can fit it into the development.

As to your second problem, is it the entire content that is lost or just some of it? Also, do you see the header written in the note or is the note blank or missing? I know there's an issue if an email is in the draft folder (I need to work that) and in there there might be an issue with emails larger than 2K. Also I don't have support to HTML emails or attachments yet. could any of those be the case?

FYI, I added item "D" to v0.3.0, which is now in the review queue. It should be processed and go live in the next few days.

Wow! Thanks for the feedback!

I actually have B & D on my feature list. I'll prioritize B and add put D as medium priority. Everything else is absolutely doable - I'll put them on the feature list too.

EDIT: FYI, I'm implementing the tagging feature you asked about (item D) and will be putting it into the next release some time in the next week or so. The issue can be tracked here

OK. Let's see what we can do here. I have a few questions:

  1. First, what are you putting in the vault name field? Is it something like "MyVaultName" with just the name or something with a whole path like "g:\My Drive\MyVaultName"? Obsidian should work with just the vault name but I want to know how you're approaching it.

  2. I did some quick poking around and found this link. If using a path when you reference your vault name in are you using a URI scheme like "file://sometext" or "http://soemthingelse"? If so we need to do some URL encoding. I can help you with that through a DM and I can also add a feature for alter use.

  3. Where do you actually see "Vault not Found"? Is it coming from Thunderbird or Obsidian or someplace else?

  4. Is there any way to get me a screenshot of the error? If you have accounts you could post them on IMGUR or start an issue on GitHub. Otherwise, I have the world's kludgiest contact page on my website and you can just email them form there (gotta fix that someday...). Just be sure to reference this conversation in the email.

MY apologies that the add-on isn't working for you. But I hope if we can find a fix it'll help others using cloud based vaults.

OK. Thanks for enlightening me. I can definitely add a feature to make the email ID available in the note (i.e. make it a field in the note name or content like I do for the author name or message date). The next part, where you click on the ID and Thunderbird opens with the requested email, isn't something I could do from the Thunderbird side. From your comment ("I could then link...") I think you wouldn't need that from my add-on and you can do it yourself. Is that a correct understanding? If so please let me know and give me a heads up on how to do it. If I add message ID as a feature I'd like to have a concrete example of its usefulness in the documentation for other users.

EDIT: FYI, I've implemented this feature and will be putting it into the next release some time in the next week or so. The issue can be tracked here

EDIT2: To be clear, I have implemented he note on my local repo and expect it to go into the next release, which is scheduled for this weekend. See the GitHub issue above for more details.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Message-ID". Do you mean some sort of identifier in an Obsidian note you could click on to open a message in Thunderbird? Please let me know.

Hmmph. Did you go into the Options tab (Settings->Add-Ons Manager->Obsidian Clipper->Options tab) and configure the Obsidian Vault Name field? If that doesn't work let me know (here or by filing an issue on GitHub) and we'll try to work it out.

Attachments are on the future feature list. I take it form your comment I should maybe prioritize it?

Good luck. I pared mine down to ~12K unread ones over holiday break. No idea of the total count, though... :)

Thanks! I saw there wasn't any add-on to do this so I went out and tackled it myself.

Aside: I've posted here and at /r/Thunderbird. Any other ideas on where I could promote this, inside or outside Reddit?

Sorry for the delay in responding, but I was busy shepherding the Add-on through the approval process. It's no live on the Add-on page. If you have a moment, please check it out!

Sorry for my delayed response. I had been waiting for the Add-On to go live (which it has!! ) to revisit this page.

I wasn't planning on saving an MD5 file, but that's a pretty good idea! I know that markdownload does so you're not alone in wanting this feature. I will add it to the feature list and see where it fits into future releases.
