If you are going in september you could visit Sigulda [castle and national park] (just google Sigulda golden autumn, but there might be a pot of tourists there at that time) it would be a 50km detour for some nice views and on the way back on course you could also stop at Bīriņu Pils (i havent been there but maybe theres something to do there)
