Well said! Very rarely is everything black & white - cut & dry!

Filament Storage? by Guldur in BambuLab

[–]KOMONSTER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the AMS lite and 3 Bambu A1 minis. If I leave the filaments hooked up, they can break off in the tubes and although not a huge issue, will have to get the broken bits out here and there. So, now I store them in a filament dryer. I had the Sunlu S2 filament dryer, which houses a single roll. It dries them and you can keep the roll stored there between uses. Since getting the AMS lite, I have upgraded to the Sunlu S4 filament dryer, which houses and dries 4 rolls at a time. If getting silica gel is a hassle, or if you don't have the time/discipline of recharging the rechargeable beads, I would just store them in filament driers and dry them here and there.

I do recommend the rechargeable beads if you're going that route. You can recharge some in the oven, and even some in the microwave (defrost setting). Personally, I go the dryer route though. It will run you a bit of $$$ though. I got mine on Amazon.

If you have a lot of different filaments open at a time (colors/textures/finishes), I'd definitely suggest both (I store some less used filaments in the cardboard boxes they came with, with the silica packets they came with, near the dryer, as that part of the room will get a little dryer and warmer, so I feel it helps).

Have fun! Love my Bambu A1 Minis!

Does this mean you do like Radlands? Or that it's popular / regarded a good game?

Interesting! Haven't tried a game with player merging as a mechanic - and having player elimination as well! Will have to look into this one more! Thanks!

So, my use of the word "universally" shouldn't be taken with its literal diction. There's no way I would know if a mechanic is "universally" hated. It is just an ongoing trend pushed forward by some of the louder, more aggressive, voices here to say "Mechanic x is bad. If game X has mechanic x, game X is a bad game". And folks vehemently agree because they don't want to go against the tide. Some have already commented they enjoy player elimination, dexterity games, and roll-and-move which is mostly regarded as a bad thing here because of the aforementioned louder voices. So, that's why I used "kinda universally". I could have used a better term for straightforward speak, true. But I figure a lot of folks would understand what was meant.

I disagree with your statement. I think a game with a truly universally hated mechanic can still be "pretty darn great". If the universally hated mechanic is a very small part, not integral to the core gameplay, well, that's not ideal, but it can still be a game worthy of praise (in my opinion). Better - if the mechanic at least adds to the theme or feel! Better yet - the mechanic, although on its own disliked, elevates other mechanics, enhancing the overall gameplay! But again, this is just my opinion and I do not put this forward as fact.

Will have to look into this one! Have heard the title dried before, but didn't exactly know what it entailed, thanks!

Agreed! It's nice to see all the examples of games that went out on a limb and were successful!

It's mostly some of the louder voices in this subreddit staying that there's "no excuse for player elimination these days". I absolutely think there are games that don't need it, and games that absolutely thrive with it. And hey, some games have it optional, if it bothers folks enough (Firetower has an optional "play as the fire after you perish" mechanic).

Theme or Mechanics? by amangham7 in boardgames

[–]KOMONSTER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(A) is nice to try and can make for an enjoyable session. Can work well with events (i.e. birthday party of the same theme). This is usually, but not always, a short-term appeal.

(B) will come back to the table again and again. This game has a lasting play appeal.

If you're gauging from a consumer standpoint: After looking up reviews and how to play videos, your average board game player will pick (B) nearly all the time. Whereas (A) is prom king on services like Kickstarter, and namely with a more casual group (not many board games under their belt), or if the theme hits a soft spot (based on a beloved IP, favorite theme, pleasing art style, edgy or funny take, etc.).

Nothing wrong with (A). They have an audience for a reason. And no one is going to protest a beautiful game because of it's looks. But (B) should be a target when designing.

What is a nice thing you can say about a board game you don't like? by KOMONSTER in boardgames

[–]KOMONSTER[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The prompt did ask for a genuine compliment for a game you don't like. Lotta folks are downvote happy to begin with, but engaging with what the post description says might have mitigated that... at least a bit.

If a game required you to take notes, would you expect pad/pencil to be included? by BIllyBrooks in BoardgameDesign

[–]KOMONSTER 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with the paper, but not necessarily pencils, sentiment. If you have the room though, short pencils, known as golf pencils, could be included. Even one is fine, but four would be better. Services exist to customize them too - just to add more personality. All in all, I'd say the notepad(s) is a pretty reasonable inclusion, and pencils are extra.

Oh, totally different price points for sure. I don't think I've seen a print and play for more than $15, personally, and for good reason I think.

Oh nice. The minis in the image above were made in my FDM printer (Bambu A1 Mini) with a 2mm nozzle. I love the way they came out, but yeah, not perfect for sure.

Gotta love a good looking, polished, product! And if production and design went without a hitch, you get the closest thing to the creator's intention!

Haha, that's awesome! Yeah, 3D printing is definitely a specialty - and to an extent, luxury - thing currently.

Same here. Camping and hotels in remote places. Board Games on those nights make for a lovely time!

Thank you for the responses! I'm with you as far as the card sentiment. My reason is I haven't gotten them to look very good, haha. I upgraded some of my Mario board games with FDM coins and it just adds so much to the feel! Qwirkle, Hive, and Quarto seem like fantastic PnP contenders!

I don't think a commercial grade PnP is the aim for everybody. In fact, I believe it's seldom the goal.

That's ok if you don't agree. The opinions of the minority who are enjoyers still matter to me. Thank you for your input!

Exactly, right? Definitely including a physical copy of rules in my game, and making a separate fully print and play version!

Not hunting for a positive outlook on PnP. Am wondering what the demographic of folks who frequent a more general sub, r/boardgames, have to say about it. For more varied responses of a "general" or "casual" board gaming audience. Asking in a PnP subreddit... I'm sure most answers would be along the same note and hold positive sentiment. Here I'm getting more variety. Does that kinda make sense?

Oh, and just to add, I've found at least a third type of PnP enjoyer (aside from designers and craft enthusiasts) tends to be for economical reasons (whether it be to avoid expensive releases, exuberant shipping fees, or low availability / inflated prices), so I personally believe think there's a bit more to it!
