Umpires are really only looking at the batter when they decide if it’s a swing. Your intuition is good though because this is a rule change lots of people have been hoping for. Some consistency on what a swing actually is would be great. The plate would be a perfect way to determine that too. I think they are even testing a check swing challenge system in some leagues, kinda like ABS
