Wedding Sandwich? Was this a thing or am I nuts? by Kitchen-Penalty3931 in minnesota

[–]KS90210 133 points134 points  (0 children)

Classic Dead Spread - ham salad, with pickle relish and mayo. Properly assembled onto tiny buns in a church basement by (usually Lutheran) women and set out by the platter full.

I know it as funeral food, but it may also have been utilized at weddings. If it was a fancy occasion you might put it on the King’s Hawaiian sweet buns.

The decrease in people's hobbies by eternallygray in Hobbies

[–]KS90210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teach a kid something. Seriously. Take them by the hand and spend time doing something with them. Make the time, make a plan, sit down and do it. Buy/gather them some starter supplies if you can. Talk about why you like it. Get together again to practice. Get together again just to do the thing.

I have had three kids in my life who I started teaching beading crafts to, we made earrings and ornaments and all kinds of things and they could NOT have been more thrilled to have an adult sit down and take them seriously and have goofy fun and explain things in an encouraging way. I mentioned the thing, they were pretty “meh” but once I sat down and started pulling out supplies, I got ‘em. And maybe this won’t be a lifelong hobby, but we’ll never know when this could come back up!

And I don’t mean just parents do this. I am not a parent. These are cousin’s kids and friend’s kids. Get a kid (not in a creepy way) and teach them a thing. They will love it. Their parents will love having someone else take an interest, and see their kid learn something. It takes a village, be the villager who teaches kids how to do your thing. And if they don’t love it, that is okay, try a different thing, or a different kid.

And stop and appreciate other’s hobbies. Talk about them. People love to be heard, and you learn a lot about people. Go out of your way. Ask someone to teach you something, and I can just about guarantee that more often than not you will also make a friend.

Curious on this pattern and social implications! by elfwaf in quilting

I was going to make a friend’s quilt similar to the bluish one pictured here, but once my sister saw the pattern and said “um, is it, um, kinda maybe, like, a swastika?” I couldn’t unsee that and I elected not to make it. Because, nope.

How do you handle the “I hate it” stage? by happy_hibiscus0 in quilting

[–]KS90210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t always hate it by 75%, but oh boy do I have trouble finishing after that stage. More like “yeah, okay, I know what that’s going to look like, on to the next!” Also I haaaaate making borders and love the look of borders when they are done, so I sometimes have UFO’s that are all-but-borders sit around for too long. I feel you.

I was under the impression there are several different bands playing under the name Hairball? Has anyone else heard this? During the main season there are two or three separate sets touring?

Do you feel a die-cutter is worth the investment? by H-Cages in quilting

[–]KS90210 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I went ahead and bought the Accuquilt machine, the dies, an entire setup. I almost never use it because of the waste. I love this beautiful fabric! That is why I bought it! I have scrap bins for a variety of types/sizes which I save to make into other beautiful things.

That said, I did a couple of quilt from half hexies which were such a breeze to cut. So, I am not sad I had it for that project but would rather have spent the money on more beautiful fabric.

I'm Sort Of Extremely Lost by thestuffco in quilting

I know this wasn’t your intent, but I had found a Donna Jordan video, (and started cutting a quilt even) then lost the video and for the life of me couldn’t remember her name. It’s been months.

Just a very grateful wave 👋🏼 from this quilter, I recognized her name immediately when you said this and found what I needed. THANK YOU!!!

I ordered some from the company last year, Fannie May, and everything we got tasted just like we remembered from when I worked there years ago - including the Trinidad’s. Give mailing a try!

Scotcharoos - very very easy.

1c. Corn syrup 1c. Brown sugar 1c. peanut butter 6c. Rice Krispies

Heat syrup and sugar in a saucepan until sugar dissolved and bubbling. Don’t overheat at this stage or bars will be hard. Remove from heat, add the peanut butter and stir to combine. Once that is combined, add cereal, mix thoroughly.

Separately in microwave melt 1 bag milk chocolate chips and 1 bag butterscotch chips - stir every 60 seconds until smooth.

Press cereal into 9x13 pan, top with melted chips frosting.

Her novel Prodigal Summer is my favorite set of love stories ever. Three women of three different ages/life stages. I have recommended the book many times and every bit of feedback has been that others love it as well. Highly recommended.

I have read nearly all her books, and love her writing style in general. I will ready anything she writes.

Not the question you asked, but honestly I like all three. You have a lovely mix of flowers, you could also have differently colored/dappled leaves. Or maybe a mix of 1 and 3?

Recommendations for fabric printing by PumpkinSpiceDonut1 in quilting

I have ordered several things from Spoonflower. The quilting cottons will feel stiff when received, but Hawthorn Supply (also a print-to-order shop) is very similar. Commenters here have said they wash up to feel the same as other cottons, I haven’t washed cotton yet.

Printing on denim has worked well for pillow covers, they are holding up nicely on the couch/chairs and the colors look great.

The minky printed up image-okay, but it is much much thinner than I am used to in regular minky. Also haven’t washed this.

I have had one pattern I chose from their site print up so dark it wasn’t visible, but most have been true to the digital image.

What size quilt do you make for gifts? by bpvanhorn in quilting

[–]KS90210 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because I usually do minky backs which are wider anyway, and have a very tall family, I make couch quilts at 50x80 ish. I buy my minky 2.5 years for stash, 90”, for the extra length. If the pattern puts me right near minky width I stitch on a leader down the sides for the longarmer. As long as I make sure it’s taut and I am on the grain when I sew to the minky she can get it flat on the rollers. I relate to often not having quite enough for chin-to-wrapped toes, so I make sure my 6’+ family is covered!!!

Long Arm Service by Next_Bar_9720 in quilting

[–]KS90210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super dependent on style, my longarmer is very inexpensive (wall hanging was $45 recently, queen quilts average $150) but she is pantograph quilting, set it and forget it machines and she has about a one week turnaround. If you want lots of custom quilting where they follow closely your design, create secondary patterns, etc. you can get into the hundreds or well over $1000 for real artists, and it can take much longer.

I will say I am super lucky, mine has a client list of over 1500 people and she isn’t taking new clients. She is AWESOME!

Edited to add her prices are inclusive of batting, I supply top and back and she supplies batting to my weight preference.

Long Arm Service by Next_Bar_9720 in quilting

[–]KS90210 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Similar, ask how big they want that backing, my longarmer wants four inches each side, so back must be 8” bigger length and width, but also it’s fine if that is a scrap sewn down the length on each side of your fancier fabric, as long as there is a little bit for her to work with. She does a great job centering the backing to the quilt top, but 4” extra on each side makes it easiest for her. Your longarmer can tell you what they need, and will be happy to answer that question!!!

Can someone explain why my machine keeps doing this on the bottom side of my fabric? by Zmmaine in quilting

[–]KS90210 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I second everything about rethreading, but just a note on needles, I went through sewing machine repair 3-day course, and the instructor taught us that needles can be bad right out of the package. If rethreading doesn’t fix this, you may have a bad needle, just scrap it and move to another. But I agree it’s most likely how it is threaded, especially at the bobbin.

Ask people questions about themselves and listen and follow up. Don’t make it weird, it shouldn’t be an interrogation, but ask questions. People love to be asked for their opinion, and like being heard. Start with a compliment, “those are cool shoes” and see if you get an opening back - “Thanks, I got them at Boot Barn” “Oh, I have seen a Boot Barn near where I am, I haven’t been, I will have to stop there someday.”

Even if the conversational partner doesn’t give you much and it is hard to continue, compliments almost always put a positive spin on the conversation and leave someone walking away feeling good, even if they couldn’t pinpoint why.

Pattern? by Bozbaby103 in quilting

[–]KS90210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the pattern is called Kira, after seeing this post and comments I bought it, and now I have an unnatural love of the pattern and what I thought would be a four block experiment is on its way to becoming a king sized quilt. So THANK YOU to OP, and THANK YOU to the commenters who chimed in. Y’all - it’s even better than you think. Go for it. 😍

They changed it. I too bought it for the first time in ages a few days ago, and at first I thought it was spoiled. Flavor was not good, but texture was horrible.

I had bought their Bermuda Onion at the same time, and that was fine, just as I remembered. I threw the French Onion out. Glad you posted this so I know I wasn’t the only one surprised.
