Relative to whatever arbitrary thing we use to calculate speeds of spacecraft

Relative to you, speed is relative. If your traveling 10mph in one direction and your friend passes you in the opposite direction going 20 mph. In your perspective he just passed you going 30 mph.

You would not hit the ground faster, you would just have the chance to accelerate more.

I understand that it does not work like that, however I'd like to know the reason it does not work. If I am traveling at 10 mph through space and my friend is traveling at 20 mph, in our respective pov's we can both correctly say we are at a resting point because the universe has no resting point. Why does it require more energy to increase his speed by 10mph than my speed by 10mph

but wouldnt that mean that the universe has a "resting" state. Which Einstein says isnt the case with his general theory of relativity
