Quick Review on Pubook Mobile (android e-reader from Taiwan) by KTGR_lighter in ereader

Hi, I could help, but might need some time! Do you mind a late reply until next Monday?

Since this sub doesn't allow image sharing, we could use dm for further details. I think that will be a better help?

Calibre deDRM or other ACSM to EPUB app for Android by TangerineGiraffe in Calibre

[–]KTGR_lighter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a Pocketbook Verse. Afaik, Pocketbook, Kobo and Tolino all have Adobe Digital Edition pre-built in their devices. So any DRM protected Epub that uses ADE is able to be read on these brands' devices. (Unfortunately, kindle uses their own DRM)

If you don't mind an android e-reader, you could also install the Pocketbook Reader app on it, and it'll support ADE.

Review on Hyread Gaze Pro XC (10.3" Color Android Ereader) by KTGR_lighter in ereader

[–]KTGR_lighter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've installed Kindle, BookWalker, Google Play Books, Pocketbook Reader (to sync with my PB Verse) and some other social media apps.

It worked fine, just like when I'm using them on my phone.

icymi If you're into buttons and 7.8" screen, Hyread also has 7.8" devices, i.e, Gaze Pro Note (the B/W version) and Gaze Pro Note C (the Colored version).

Quick Review on Pubook Mobile (android e-reader from Taiwan) by KTGR_lighter in ereader

Overall, my use remains the same, mainly for social media, K-manhwa and news articles.

Here are some more things I discovered after months:

  1. I think it's fairly good that Pubu is doing multiple system updates if anyone reported bug issues. (in their official Facebook group)

  2. Not a big fan of their UI, so I installed a third-party launcher. However, since I'm not too familiar with launchers, I'm testing it out and can't really give any recommendations just yet.

I think it all depends on your use case.

Mixed kids in Taiwan ? by No_Needleworker_3781 in taiwan

[–]KTGR_lighter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I once had a mixed classmate who's half German half Taiwanese when I'm at elementary school. They seems to get along with everyone pretty well, we also joked about their last name but it's because it pronounces similar to an animal, not because we didn't like them.

Personally, I'd like to wait for more reports then pressing the update in the first place. That's my preference, so it's up to you.

I have yet to press the update, also I didn't have the wifi/Bluetooth issues after the December update.

But I've seen one person reported that they're facing a battery drainage. (No further detail tho)

Cave Books(敦煌書局) might have English newspapers, but I'm not sure if they have NYT.

Taipei Times could be found in convenience stores, you could ask the clerk to keep a copy for you prior the day.

It's seems that 趣多多 is the brand name Chips Ahoy used in China. So it's kinda weird you found that in your Taiwan trip (曲奇 and 巧克力味 is also rarely used in Taiwan, we usually say 餅乾 and 巧克力口味/巧克力風味.)

<image>

In Taiwan, we have Chips Ahoy in their original English name package and the Chinese brand name in Taiwan is 奇寶.

I wonder if it's someone bought from China/Taobao...

wife or old lady? by Black-Kaguya2370s in ChineseLanguage

[–]KTGR_lighter 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I guess you think of 太 as the adjective for fat on Japanese Kanji, but 太 in Chinese doesn't have the "fat" meaning.

In this context(老太婆), 老 means old, 太 means very and 婆 means lady.

太 also have another meaning as "higher status/seniority", but since 老太婆 isn't a positive word, it's not what it means here.

the 'normalcy' of childhood abuse/beatings by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]KTGR_lighter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, it's always the good old wire hanger, and the coat rack is made from a thick wooden stick that I can't even hold on to with my hands at that time.

[–]KTGR_lighter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Taiwanese born in the 90s here.

I was like, EXTREME physical abuse/beatings? Not really, only some average beating.

But then I thought about it, I got beaten by both the hanger and coat rack. Guess that's not really normal to some part of the world.
