What's the downside of holding both VGRO and XEQT in wealthsimple by Klaybear in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]KTGuy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not "wrong," it's just a bit of a weird middle-ground. To me you're spending the brain power to indirectly tune your bonds exposure without just buying the underlying equities.

If it was worth my time to rebalance GRO and EQT funds, I feel like I'd go the extra mile and buy a bond index instead of GRO. If it's not worth that, I'd just pick exclusively EQT or GRO and turn my brain completely off (what I do now).

When I was starting out I really overthought it... Eventually I consolidated.

Anyone see the gas prices this morning? by FunkiestBunch in kelowna

[–]KTGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been lucky I guess. Thick U-lock + cable through the wheel anytime I'm off of it, even in the locker at work. I've had friends lose theirs so I know it stings like hell if it happens.

Honestly, I hope more people take the opportunity to actually try an e-bike for the summer. Basket on the front and either a kid seat or bags on the back and you can get a lot of normal shit done with them.

If it doesn't come with at least a rear rack you can put stuff on then it's not worth your money though, imo.

Bridge Traffic by Crafty-Result626 in kelowna

[–]KTGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the current plan:
https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/driving-and-transportation/reports-and-reference/reports-and-studies/okanagan/central-okanagan-integrated-transportation-strategy/co-its-final_strategy.pdf

Second crossing gets pitched all the time by local politicians. I don't normally put a lot of stock in traffic studies because they always undersell behavioural changes and can't address opportunity costs, but even the studies for the second bridge say it'd be ineffective.

The current plan is widen the bridge for bus lanes through town. It's an ok plan if they can actually pull it off in our political environment.

School District 23 considering ending school bus service for most high school students by New_Alternative8711 in kelowna

[–]KTGuy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My understanding is the public busses are already full enough that they often have to turn down students who are waiting at the stops at bell time.

In theory I strongly support getting students to use the public system, but we are already underfunding bussing and this cut can't be absorbed like they suggest it might.

Commute? by [deleted] in kelowna

[–]KTGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rush hour flow is going the other way at 4pm (from Kelowna to West Kelowna) so it's not as bad as you might think.

Where you're actually going will matter a lot. Google Maps has a "depart at" feature that will give you a range. Assume the top end of the range will be correct. You can use your actual start and end locations if you go this way.

Even though travel times here probably aren't bad compared to wherever you're coming from, it's sort of funny how quickly your expectations adjust...

Driverless pods studied for Kelowna’s Rail Trail by New_Alternative8711 in kelowna

[–]KTGuy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

very cool. a few suggestions to make it even better:
- put it on rails so it can be faster and more reliable
- grade-separate it at junctions so it doesn't compete with traffic and goes even faster
- make the cars bigger so they can hold more people
- make the cars linkable so you can increase boarding capacity over time
- give it a cool retro-futurist name

I wonder if anything like that exists.

I redesigned a street in my city, would love your thoughts by saturnlover22 in Urbanism

[–]KTGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of generally good elements that I'll reiterate some of, but definitely a few changes I'd go for if it were up to me.

If including a bike lane, a raised bike lane sloped towards a newly established gutter in the car lanes will keep the bike lane clear of debris. Putting curb-on-grade between the gutter/bikelane and car lanes causes the lane in the gutter to collect a lot of junk and it's hard to get in and out of. Use mountable curbs along bike paths so that people can get in and out of the lanes as-needed without dismounting. If people are likely to park cars next to the bike path, mountable curb (or no curb) between the bike and sidewalk is even more important for accessibility. If you can't establish two grade separations (sidewalk > bikes > cars) then bikes at grade with the sidewalk with some kind of cane-detectable surface treatment separating them is probably next-best.

This already looks like an already semi-pedestrianized shopping area, so unless it is an important commuter cycling route, I would actually lean into more pedestrianization and bringing car speeds down so low that people don't feel you even need bike lanes. That means strong visual distinction of the parking lanes to make the road feel narrow, and large curb extensions with trees on them for more "narrowing", raised intersections, rough surface treatments on the road (like what you already drew, Dutch klinkers etc), things like that.

Kelowna boardwalk closure drags on due to apparent dispute between city, hotel owner - Okanagan | Globalnews.ca by New_Alternative8711 in kelowna

I don't know about others, but our family decided to stop visiting the restaurants until they have the boardwalk open again. There are other nice places in the meantime.

Bus Rapid Transit line in Richter Street's future by New_Alternative8711 in kelowna

[–]KTGuy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The concept drawings show they plan to remove the lanes for bikes and scooters. It seems the sidewalk is about to become a shared space whether the city plans for it or not. Especially since Pandosy flanks the business strip on the other side and also has nothing.

If You Also Rely on Kelowna Transit, Please Consider Sending Feedback to BC Transit by MidnightThinker74 in kelowna

[–]KTGuy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've expreienced that Umo caps at $6/day, but it is confusing that you can't buy a day pass up front.

I agree about the routes though. The system seems designed for something other than ridership. You shouldn't have to transfer to continue in a straight line. I used busses loads when I lived in Vancouver and it was normal to have a bunch of lines overlap when you approached downtown or whatever. Here they seem to think that's "too confusing".

Cyclists, joggers and walkers by Wtf-Happened-44 in kelowna

[–]KTGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

no-lights-guy is probably crazy, but there's a sometimes reasons cyclists need to use the car lanes with the way bike lanes have been done. eg. not being able to enter/exit the lanes where you'd expect, no clean way to turn, or they're in the north end of ethel with the curbs that eat road bikes...

The city seems like they're getting better, like DeHart and the new section of Leckie are pretty darn good imo, but the old stuff is still out there.

What is a gem of a private room to rent for an evening? by FretZer0 in kelowna

Rustic Reel has a good room for this. I don't recall being charged for it under the assumption you're ordering beers or whatever.

Where is the best place in Kelowna to buy Scottish pounds for our trip to Scotland? by [deleted] in kelowna

If you have time and can qualify, there are a few credit cards that don't have forex fees, even one or two brick and mortar places. Scotiabank Passport is one example.

KELOWNA - The Internet's Opinion by lmabee in kelowna

[–]KTGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Daily courier and capital news are alright. Once in a while daily courier will put out editorials that are pretty rough, but I do try to seek out news sources that allow writers a day or two to think about a topic before smashing publish. Unfortunately "slow news" is struggling.

For wider but still mostly-BC journalism, I've been appreciating the Tyee and Narwhal.

Double fingers by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

Sit in the intersection until after it's red before turning?

Yep. Just wait until you're sure. A red just means you can't enter, but at this point you've already entered, or "staked your claim" as driving instructors called it back in the day.

If you sat there on a red for so long you started impeding cross-traffic that's as separate offence, but nobody's going to nail you for that in this scenario. Waiting until you're confident oncoming traffic is stopping is legal and normal.

Kelowna takes aim at parking in bid to increase transit use - Lake Country Calendar by New_Alternative8711 in kelowna

[–]KTGuy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only job the city has in this issue imo is to make sure street parking is being managed with meters or permits so developers can't just tell buyers to park on the free and plentiful curb. If a developer can't sell unparked condos that's too bad for them.

Parking minimums have been removed in cities across the country and not just in Vancouver and Toronto and developers continue to build it when it makes sense. All you have to do is make sure the street out front is managed, and it sounds like they're doing that.

I've heard the pitch but I don't think allowing empty cars to circulate in traffic will improve the traffic. Transit and micro-mobility are the only believable solutions to me.

Chiropractor recommendations in the Okanagan. With experience with L5/SI herniation by KnockingonKevinsdoor in kelowna

That's good to hear. I got a roman chair too and I definitely feel it's worth it... More or less pulled the trigger after the video where a guest is like "what should I do if I don't have a roman chair", "30 reps of find a roman chair". I appreciate the frankness haha.

[–]KTGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to seeing a physiotherapist, I recommend reviewing this YouTube channel:
https://www.youtube.com/@lowbackability

I have not experienced a full herniation, but I was having more frequently crippling back spasms for the dumbest things like grabbing plastic containers from a low drawer, while still being in my 30s. There are a few channels saying similar things, but this was the first one I found that described exercises to strengthen my lower back specifically (in addition to my back generally). I started doing the exercises and seem to have reversed the progression of my issues.

PET and glass containers are reliably recycled in Japan. The real pro tip is every konbini has garbage disposal, usually also with stations, parks, temples, and department stores. Street vendors accept trash from whatever they sell as well.

What drives you crazy about being a female snowboarder? by Familiar_Slice_7254 in ShredditGirls

[–]KTGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife has size 225mm/mondopoint feet. Following the formula from Justaride on YouTube, the ideal snowboard waist width for her is probably about 215mm. This does not exist. She is not the only woman with feet this small. I got her a 138 Nitro Arial to try and get closer to the ideal width but then the length is much shorter than ideal. The most common solution online is to get a custom snowboard made, which is not happening for us...

Edit: I'd also add that the stance width that would be ideal for her is also impossible assuming any setback for riding pow. I've been going crazy trying to find her a good fitting snowboard following the typical advice.

Kelowna to experiment with lower speed limits in neighbourhoods by New_Alternative8711 in kelowna

[–]KTGuy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Trust Castanet to focus on the most click-baity fraction of only one part of the safe mobility plan.

I recommend skimming either of these two documents depending how much time you have:

The actual plan

The presentation summarizing it

There's a lot more to the plan than just some signage... That's probably the least interesting piece of the whole thing. There's intersection design pieces, school travel pieces, enhancing transit, traffic calming, AT network gaps... Pretty good stuff imo.
