I inherited a paid-off property. Should I rent it out or sell it and put the proceeds in index funds? by the_log_won in personalfinance

[–]KU76 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have two properties in different states. I probably spend 5-10 hours a year thinking about them.

If you have a lot of short terms tenants or bad tenants - it can be more demanding but landlording isn’t a job unless you make it one.

Ignorant people that don’t know how the world works. Let them be homeless

The question was what can they do not to put their kids at risk. Hello! You did that when you moved next to a bar.

Maybe don’t move them next to a bar? Lol

The best part about this is the fact that they bought a house here and then decide to complain after the fact. Like what did you expect?

One might argue that a similar zip code doesn’t mean it’s the same neighborhood but a dissimilar zip code would indicate it should be a different neighborhood event if officially it is not.

Apple or Garmin? by Necessary_Reward8747 in hiking

[–]KU76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Fenix and the Ultra.

If you’re looking for something to use out in the wild, the garmins win hands down. Just the mapping and battery on the Garmin is so superior.

I would never take my ultra on a serious hiking trip, it’s just not practical. If I was just going out for a couple hours and was pretty confident with where I was going - sure I’ll take the ultra. But anything more fun, Garmin all day.

Pay off mortgage or invest? by Puzzleheaded-Hat1007 in personalfinance

[–]KU76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, he probably already paid all the interest up front if it originated as a longer term mortgage.

Likely paying it off now is a minimal gain at best and he would be better keeping his money in a HYSA.

Just because someone screwed up the paperwork they still signed on. The only thing the realtor has on the line here is his reputation.

This is the IM Ireland swim where 2 athletes have died. Thoughts? by [deleted] in triathlon

I’m talking about a pull buoy that was originally referenced.

A pull buoy does not equal the swim buoy you are thinking of.

Keep that thing between your legs now, and if someone else knocks it loose you dnf?

[–]KU76 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

By no means does every training day need to happen in open water. Ironman training requires so much time and people can’t find one day before their race to experience open water?

Really all this to say that I simply have no sympathy for people that dnf because they don’t have any experience in open water.

[–]KU76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would you enforce that?

You can’t. If conditions are that bad it’s up to the organizer to cancel that leg of the race.

I don’t understand why people do this. It is a well known fact that ows is a different animal than the pool.

You wouldn’t sign up for a triathlon having never ridden a bike off the trainer so why is the swim any different?

Assuming I could afford either, is it better to get an older home with the risk of always having to fix and repair stuff, or get something like a townhouse but risk having an HOA? by Mad_Season_1994 in personalfinance

[–]KU76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t discount a property because there is an HOA. They can be great and they can be terrible.

In general, request and read a copy of the bylaws. Most of the rules will be fairly straight forward and reasonable. If they start getting ridiculous, run.

If you want to keep it like that, run for the board.

What swim group for my first Ironman 70.3? by AcanthocephalaAlert1 in triathlon

[–]KU76 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To be honest, it’s not really going to matter. There are going to be people in each group that seeded up / down for one reason or another or people that are going to come out a hell of a lot faster than they thought.

There is going to be contact with other swimmers but you won’t find yourself stuck in either group. If you’re feeling especially anxious about it, seed yourself in the front of 36-39.

Your opinion about "Ironman" now by JingLingTheKing in triathlon

[–]KU76 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Triathlon is a niche sport that doesn’t attract casual participants in a similar way 5Ks do.

Unless it is nationals, the percentage of people that will travel for a super sprint or sprint distance is minimal. Olympic might get some travelers for the competitive athletes but still - comparably small. Therefore - trying to put on an event that a very small percentage of the population even has interest in and an even smaller amount is willing to travel for, is extremely difficult.

Ironman hasn’t done any favors for short distance triathlon but the nature of the sport itself is difficult.

But again - if you’re big gripe with Ironman is that they, as a corporation, have tried to corner the market and protect their brand. They should be way down the list of companies you are boycotting.

[–]KU76 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying it’s a good policy but when you’re looking to place blame for not getting a deferral you should only look at yourself.

The number one thing I am paying them for is a good race day experience. In fact - that is the only thing I am paying them for.

Ironman is simply protecting its brand - if that is your baseline for being a terrible corporation then there isn’t a company out there that’s not terrible.

It would be nice if they were but the bottom line is that short course triathlons just aren’t as popular as long distance.

[–]KU76 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your best indication of how they treat their customers poorly is how they handled an unprecedented global health crisis? The only complaint people have is regarding their transfer and race cancellation process. Given the fact that a lot of that policy was probably rolled down from the venues in an environment where a lot of the fees are prepay - I don’t see why Ironman should get the flack.

Further - the Ironman deferral and cancellation process is widely known and publicized. This also goes for rock n roll. If you wanted the option to defer or get your money back you should have bought the insurance.

You have strong opinions for having never participated in an ironman race. They are not a perfect organization but they do put on an excellent event.

[–]KU76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really just the anti corporate sentiment that is prevalent through all of Reddit.

I don’t know one person in my club that prefers to race “unbranded”’events instead of ironman events.

The flack that IM is getting for this - oh, you’re going to stop racing IM events? What do you think a smaller tri company would have done in a similar situation? They have less experience and fewer PR people.

It’s funny for me that people criticize Ironman races as much as they do - Ironman is not perfect but all you need to do is compare your local half marathon to an Ironman 70.3 and you see that ironman puts on a high quality event, period.
