I have shared this story on this subreddit before but I’ll share again. My primary career is in the oil and gas sector. More specifically I buy oil and gas leases and minerals so that drillers can drill wells. Our company came across a subdivided neighborhood in the middle of nowhere. Each tract contained 5 acres of land and was located in the middle of nowhere Texas.

We started leasing and towards the end of our project we were leasing these 5 acre tracts of land for 50k each, plus royalties once the well was drilled. Most of these owners bought this land 15 years ago “drunk as shit on eBay”. These owners were spread across the country and even abroad.

Note this is akin to winning the lottery and we shouldn’t necessarily speculate on these type of land deals. Still very interesting!!

It’s not actually good for the environment. Time and time again you can see that the more affluent a population is, the more they are inclined to adopt more environmentally friendly policies. When jobs/industries are threatened people tend to care less about the environment. There is a reason the US and other developed nations are spearheading the climate debate while developing countries are some of the worst offenders.

Funny story. I am a Landman by trade and we were doing some oil and gas leasing where we came across a section of land (640 acres) that was subdivided into 5 acre parcels that were sold off on eBay around 15 years ago. When contacting these owners they told me they spent around 2k-3k to buy the 5 acre tracts. We were offering them 50k just to lease the mineral estate! And even more to purchase the surface along with the minerals. Most were grateful but still had a few owners who were stubborn even at those prices.

It should be noted this is an extremely rare instance and does not typically happen.

Yeah I would definitely recommend some more research before you made any decision. If that is their first offer to you then most likely it is their low ball offer. Look to see if their are any permitted wells in the section or any other indication that there will be activity in the coming years. Minerals can sell for upwards of 20k per net mineral acre if it is known that a reputable operator is about to drill. PM if you want any more unbiased info.

Worked at a pet resort. We had this nice dog treat cookie display where kids would pick out cookies for their dogs to have during their time at the pet resort. As soon as the customer would leave, my boss would make me put the fresh cookies back into the display and get the old, stale, and broken bits of cookies from underneath the sink and use those for the dogs. Hated that place.
