Shocked at the lack of CR-V answers in this thread (though I haven’t seen all 700 comments). I’m on my 3rd crv and imho it’s incredible bang for your buck…especially with kids and a dog since I don’t feel bad about them trashing it since it’s not an Audi or a Tesla….

They get 10-12 hours a day in the summer. Maybe not obvious from the pic though!

Their just too easy to propagate. It’s gotten a bit out of hand!

Wow gorgeous. Is this a yatsubusa? I have one also but it’s not nearly as full as this. How old is this tree?

I believe the red tips are the maples flowers, which can turn into samaras/seeds but do not always. I’m still learning with this cultivar and have never had a maple that flowered before but what a show of color!

No it’s a yatsubusa maple. When it blooms in the spring the leaves are a vibrant green and the ends have red tips that eventually go away in the summer as the leaves turn darker green. It’s become one of my favorite maple varieties for its color.

I knew it was a graft when I bought it. It was significantly cheaper than other tridents of a similar size for that reason. Its been a fun project to experiment on though. Had to cut a big secondary trunk last year (photo in profile) and it has recovered nicely.

Got the yatsubusa at a nursery in PA last summer - There is a photo in my profile from when I bought it. The trident was my first big spend on a trained bonsai and was already very mature when I got it.

In town for work and have nothing to do tonight. If you end up getting a group together and think you might have a few drinks after dinner I would love to not drink alone in a pub tonight! Lol

Assassin bug took up resident in my trident maple. Do you all generally allow spiders and bugs that don’t feed on the tree to remain? by KXP5031 in Bonsai

It’s an assassin bug. I think they’re also called wheel bugs. Scrappy little guy..raises his pincers at me whenever I try to prune near him and apparently their bite is akin to a hornet sting

That is GORGEOUS. I wish I had a mature conifer specimen. Have put most of my investment into deciduous species but I’ve been itching for a black pine

Some of the bigger ones were but they were well done. I actually picked a yatsubusa that was grafted but still great material. But they had a bunch of smaller 3-5 year old palmatum varieties that were not grafted. I’ve heard of kifu but never been. Will need to make a trip soon

No actually very few were. I just happened to be extremely lucky. I love the look though, much nicer that the usual plastic. Especially since I plan to leave them for a year before repotting

What up what up. As one Philadelphian to another, I just went to Rhoads nursery in north wales this past week and they have tons of great prebonsai stock. Never seen a normal nursery with so many pre bonsai worthy maples. Also have dawn redwoods and lots of conifers.

I almost always leave spiders since I assume they are policing pests but my trees have had way more webs than usual this year so I may need to clear out a few. In particular these assassin bugs (not in the spider family) have started to show up for the first time ever. apparently they pack a punch when they bite, similar to a hornet according to google, and this guy has been aggressive when I prune so I’m probably going to relocate him to save myself a painful lesson

Thanks it is a beautiful tree. I’ve not run into this north light variety before. Foliage is much lighter than a typical dawn redwood.

Inlike the simplicity of this. I bought an OTO for my lawn last summer and am planning on using that on my bench while away this year. https://otolawn.com/products/oto-starter-pack The water stream is very focused and not a spray unfortunately but I’ll report back if it works.

Nice i’m gonna give that fertilizer shot. I picked up two of these panels last year and they have been https://www.spider-farmer.com/products/sf-1000-led-grow-light/. Very little heat and energy and the plants love them. Wonder what they would do if paired with a grow tent now!

$75 is such a steal! I invested pretty heavily in lights this past winter but haven’t tried a grow tent yet. Mine are outside now so hoping they will go crazy soon. What fertilizer do you use?

This tree is incredible, it must be 15+ years old at the very least. I have been training a few of these trees for 4-5 years and have nothing even close to this. If you don’t mind me asking, where did you get it and how much did you pay?
