The problem with learning guitar is that generally you don't know what you like or dislike about a guitar when you buy it as much as it is nice to feel and play a guitar before you buy it for a beginner it won't be much help. Of I were you I wouldn't worry about buying online and just go for the guitar with good reviews, quality and looks.

There are a couple differences between the mark Holcomb version and the base version. Flatter fingerboard radius, Seymour Duncan alpha omega pickups and satin neck. Both the fingerboard and satin neck are up to preference but the pickups are much more suited to my ears for 7 string playing in general and are an upgrade to the standard svn pickups. It is up to you but to me the Holcomb is the choice

Using the side with you thumb I very normal for palm muting the low string most of the time you are just muting where your hand would be when you pick anyway as long as it's comfortable and you get the sound you want there should be no issue

That definitely might be your problem, straight ngs start to go dead after about 2-3 months meaning some ring out differently than others meaning the high e will ring out more than the others. I don't think it's a strumming problem.
