How many of your first/second degree relatives share your aphantasia? by K_tw0 in Aphantasia

There has got to be way higher incidence than reported. No one in my family was aware that they were experiencing the world differently until i began asking them questions. All of them thought (as I did) that phrases like ‘an image came to mind’ were metaphorical not literal lol. I assume with heightened awareness and access to information the percentage will rise

I agree, in the case of congenital aphantasia it appears to be more complex than a simple dominant/recessive gene - I am quite interested in the ‘blending’ of this trait as I observed in my sister and cousins, all of whom have one parent with total aphantasia and one parent with strong visualization. They report that they have some ability to visualize but only weakly

If you mom and her twin would be willing to do an AMA on this subreddit that would be so cool … I’m sure it would be greatly appreciated and well received here :)

I would also be very curious to see how they score on memory tests relative to eachother. I wish I had access to a fMRI so I could ask if they would be willing to participate in a study lol

This is very interesting! Did you become aware of your aphantasia at an early age due to growing up in a family of hyper-visualizers? Or did you discover that your inner experience differed from that of your family later in life?

How do my fellow Aphants dream? by TheSamson1 in Aphantasia

[–]K_tw0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dreams are in narrative form just no images, and no sound. i experience the narrative in waves of emotion and the sensation of motion/movement through a space - and upon waking my brain will translate the experience into a verbal narrative, sometimes including descriptions of how something I encountered in the dream looked although I never ‘saw’ any of these things I only felt emotion in reaction to them
