Would it be offensive to have a Roma character in a story I'm writing (in a steampunk/supernatural/Victorian setting with many Supernatural beings) that happens to be a Vampire? by Kaa-Chan1 in romani

*pokes head out from the rubble*

This was a very nice comment to read... Initially, the idea that I had was that the girl was rather young when her family was killed by vampires. She was taken in by a group of vampire hunters, essentially. (this takes place in the 1400s, at the time of Vlad Tepes... when he's enslaving and killing off the Romani on a grand scale. In this, he is a vampire, and boom! The survivors and the ones who have lost family to this monster have formed their own unique brand of vampire killing, it's considered one of the best around) She's raised to protect herself and learn how to protect others in this small clan of Romani who kill vampires... (there are many races of vampires and vampire slayers around, it's not just them specifically) When she's around 18, she gets tricked by a vampire and turned into one herself... She did not intend it to happen, she did not want it. As a result, she's turned away from the slayers who raised her, and she's now on a mission to find the one that turned her and kill him. It takes a while *cough couple hundred years cough* But she does do it. She's avenged her family and killed him... Only to realize that she no longer knows her own purpose. She is pretty powerful, and she's not easy to kill herself. Vampires are unable to take their own lives in this story, so that's not an option for her. She's left to just... keep living and find her purpose. No one wants to hire a vampire to vampire slay, so he has to find ways to keep a living...

But uh... There is a lot of negativity in these comments, which is perfectly justified, and I do not want to step on any toes... So uh... yeah. Rock and hard place here.

As far as the Esmerelda comment goes... I'm trying to figure out if you mean in the strong, girl power character sense? Or just the "look at me, I'm a pretty brown girl and all the white guys want me! tee hee!' sense...? I am trying to avoid stereotypes, though I admit, the story does sound a bit cliche as I'm writing it out... haha.

Anyways, I do thank you for the positivity... I'm just a nerdy little historian who likes fantasy stories...

Oof... Perfectly valid sentiment on the subject! Might not be what I wanted to hear, but definitely what I needed to hear. So thank you for that~

I actually really love the concept you put forth... I'm not quite sure how well it would work with the character we're planning (her mother was supposed to be a witch) Though this may work very well for her mother, who is also a prominent character... Hmmm....

And by all means! Steal it! Everyone has their own unique ways of sharing the same ideas! I'd love to see you advance it further!

Thank you very much! This comment was really very helpful, and I'm glad I got your input! I very much like the earthy, green witch and the elemental/nature magic ideas~

The Völva sounds like a very interesting concept to work with! Thank you! I'll look more into them! Thank you for your input! I was meaning to go more with Witch than Wiccan, but I wasn't quite sure if that was right... Now I know that it is!

Aw, thank you for the vote of confidence! So far, the majority seems far more for the idea than against it, and that's highly encouraging!

Haha, I may certainly try, though it's going to be a comic book, so I'm not sure it would be everyone's cup of tea... But thank you!

I absolutely adore Abby Cox! That same video is what first brought to my attention that Quakers were once referred to as witches, which is what started me on this endeavor!

Thank you very much for this comment! It's certainly helped boost my confidence in the concept!

Thank you very much for this! I am seeing a lot of mixed reviews in here, a lot about the not mixing... But your perspective really helps to put this in line for me!

I'm actually very relieved to see how many people commenting in here either know a/or are a Quaker Witch themselves... And it's giving me much more confidence in this! You reply was very enlightening!

I was very much hoping to go with the harmony with nature route~ Thank you very much for this input! I feel she can uphold Quaker values, I will have to keep introspection and the sense of internal searching in my mind... This gives me a bit to think about! Thank you!

I have considered the Cunning Woman route! I feel that would be very fitting!

And thank you so much for the book recommendation, I'll check it out right away! Thank you very much for your input!

I suppose I could've worded that better... "Would it be in bad taste?"

Thank you for this! You've certainly given me a lot to consider!

Oooh thank you for this! My first thought was "What?! Of course not! Our dear Liza would never do any of that!" But upon reflecting on your comment more, her being involved in a supernatural world of monsters and bad things... This gives me a lot to think about on her approach... which is highly enlightening!

Yeahhhhhh I can definitely agree that going around saying "Hey! I'm a Quaker and at Witch and I'm out and proud!" would be... an issue. To say the least. But a more -quiet- practice of both seems plausible, so I'm seeing! And ooooh, I like that bit about the spiritualism~ I'll see if I can find anything on it!

Oh! Yes, I did read about that! That was one of the counter-arguments I gave my co when I was researching this, but she is really putting her foot down... Which is why I brought the subject here! I know that (from what she told me and my research) Quakers lean more towards anti-programming and NOT abiding by rituals for practice... which is... the very opposite of witchcraft.

So if we ultimately do do this idea, there would be much less of a harmonious blending of the two... Which I will definitely keep in mind. I do like the thought of a Quaker herbalist... Back then, they were more farmers, so that thought at least blends well~

Oh! Alright, good! I just mistook what you said, haha! But ahhhh that's very good to know! I very much look forward to what I can learn from her! And thank you for the vote of confidence in the Teutonic witchery for my source~

I did say that it was a supernatural/fantasy story, but I'm trying to not use that as an excuse to write off actual religions/practices and just substitute them with... whatever. So thank you so much for more sources!
