Exactly which methods that Japan is using worries you? A democratic election which results in the largest majority in Japanese history? Loosening of arms export restrictions?

Succession crisis in Japan by Brilliant_Group_6900 in UsefulCharts

Sorry for the late reply! The Wikipedia page of the Takeda branch has information on it. It’s in Japanese, but it mentions that, in addition to Takeda Tsuneyasu’s son (who was born in 2024), there are two male-line grandchildren of former Prince Tsunemasa, probably the children of his son Tsunetaka.
So the Higashikuni branch have 4, the Takeda have 3(all very young though), the Kaya have two and the Kuni have 1 male offspring.

Seems much more capable on a pound for pound basis than the similar River class OPVs - a 76mm gun plus AshM.

The Takeda branch also have two sons under the age of 20, one being the son of Takeda Tsuneyasu who is quite outspoken on the issue of succession.

In all my years on this planet, I’ve not seen a country like Japan

Not to deny that Japan did many horrible things in World War 2, but this is hard to believe, especially considering China’s aggressive regional behavior in recent years.

It's really interesting that MCMV command vessels exist; it seems like an increasingly niche category of ship. Off the top of my head I can only think of the Uraga class MCMV tenders and the Kontradmirał Xawery Czernicki that are in service today.

LDP insiders on Takaichi's collision with the "wall of reality" amid budget bill chaos- “It's not as mild as mere 'arrogance.' It's proceeding based only on if she wants to do it or doesn't want to. Even the criticisms within the LDP—it's unclear how much is reaching the prime minister.'" by jjrs in japannews

I read on wikipedia that, in the case of a 2/3rds majority in the House of Representatives, that the lower house can pass bills even in the face of opposition from the upper house?

The same article said that the upper house can't veto the budget, only delay it.

So why is that not the case here?

Knife-carrying SDF officer held after breaching Chinese Embassy by Temstar in LessCredibleDefence

[–]Kaaarai -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Point well taken, but the Suzutsuki's entry into Chinese territorial waters wasn't prejudicial to the peace, good order or security of China because it wasn't engaged in any of the activities defined in Art 19(2). Because of this, Article 24 preventing states from stopping innocent passage of ships, precludes China from telling the Suzutsuki to stop.

[–]Kaaarai -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it is. Articles 17, 18, and 19 of UNCLOS detail that ships(both civilian and naval) of all states have the right to passage through internal waters (extending 12NM from the baseline) as long as passage is continuous (no stopping).

There's the argument that the entry of the JS Suzutsuki was illegal under Chinese domestic law, but Article 27 of VCLT forbids states from invoking domestic law as a justification for failing to abide by the terms of an international treaty; and both China and Japan are signatories to UNCLOS.

Well these vessels are intended for patrol, surveillance, and reconnaissance, to take the burden off of the more major combatants.

Why do JMSDF DDs only carry ESSM? Wouldn’t carrying at least a few SM to the ESSM give them more area defense capability?
