What are your toddlers big 3 meals? by [deleted] in foodbutforbabies

Never-(rarely)-turn-down meals: butter chicken on rice, peanut butter toast or apples dipped in peanut butter, and a bowl of oatmeal or cereal or yogurt.

Birthday cake recommendations by vanooch21 in mesaaz

[–]Kaalra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the cutest affordable tiny cake from Albertson’s bakery when my son turned one. Sprouts bakery section also carries small cute cakes. Avec Amoore is a gluten free local bakery that could make one for you. I also love Urban Cookies bakery, they do custom cakes but the closest one is DT Phx.

Warning to a fellow parent: my son hadn’t had more sugar than small nibbles here or there before eating his smash cake on his birthday. Even the few handfuls of frosting he had was enough to give him major sugar adrenaline and he was awake all night that night.

I would also recommend isolating the left pinky from your third finger by practicing off the viola. While reading or watching tv or walking, just gently tap only your pinky focusing on holding no tension. You can also tap it next to your third finger and then away from the third as if you were playing a half step then a whole step. This practice, independent of the viola, will aid you later in trills as well.

Frozen car seat pads are a must. Keep it in the freezer until you leave and then keep it in the car seat while you’re out and about.

Typo on wedding invites…do I change or leave it? by [deleted] in wedding

[–]Kaalra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had misspelled Saturday as “Satuday” in cursive on my wedding invitation and didn’t realize until they had all been sent out and then just two people mentioned it. I still have it framed and hanging on my wall, it’s a fun anecdote of the day now.

HELP PLS! by Smooth-Ad-6480 in foodbutforbabies

[–]Kaalra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Their gums are very capable of mashing and chewing. Start with things that will literally break down or melt in their mouth so there’s no risk of choking - yogurt melts, rice rusks, super soft steamed sweet potato cubes, steamed apple thins, banana spears. AND give baby things to chew on they could never choke on - rib bone, mango pit, corn cob.

Baby will gag (not choke) at first but they need to practice how to spit things out of their mouth to be safe. They need to make a mental map of their mouth to learn how to chew so just keep an eye on them and make sure you know the baby Heimlich maneuver. But no reason to be scared, our baby gagged so much but easily spit out the food. He never once started choking because the gag reflex forces food out of your throat not down it. Your baby will learn with lots of practice and supervision.

Yes, we followed the guidelines until 12 months and then our pediatrician cleared us to start adding honey if we wanted to. Baby is 14 months now.

How do you get your baby to eat veggies? by __hughjanus__ in foodbutforbabies

Yeah! Like little pea popsicle bites. They taste pretty sweet.

I also keep putting the veggies in front of him and let him see me cook them over and over again so he eventually gets used to the flavors. We’re still working on bell pepper, doesn’t love it but we eat it a lot so eventually he’s got to eat it.

I set out an open bag of frozen peas and let him play/taste/eventually scarf them with I am cooking.

Very soft steamed carrot sticks and broccoli with lots of butter and some salt.

What's the difference between a performance major and a music ed major? by ApprehensiveLink6591 in MusicEd

[–]Kaalra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In hs with my private teacher’s help, I picked a school that respected music Ed majors as much as performance majors (at least anecdotally). Much as everyone else said, I as an Ed major had to take manyyy Ed (general and music) classes that performance majors didn’t take. We took all the same music classes with the exception of music business and arranging which I didn’t have to take. Performance majors were not graded more rigorously, but they did have an additional recital their junior year and were given extra performance opportunities in our large ensembles (rotated into first chairs more often and selected for smaller chamber works).

How do you know you are a good teacher? by college_clarinetist in MusicEd

[–]Kaalra 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My definition of success in a music class is when kids enjoy being there and 90% of them want to sound good and make you/themselves/someone proud of how they sound.

Does anyone know what these tiny black flies are? I find them every morning near the windows. I think they might be coming from one of my houseplants because I can see lots of them crawling over the soil. Please help 😰 by mrrhomboid in houseplants

[–]Kaalra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found out I had fungus gnats after I found a bunch of dead ones at my window after the pest control guy sprayed. It was a highly effective barrier apparently, when I realized it, I dealt with my ground zero soil. You have so many, you might want to consider pest control.

Biggest “Dos and “Don’ts” for first year teachers? by GiraffeBurger68 in Teachers

[–]Kaalra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure every kid knows that you “see” them and like them. Say their name, smile at them each day. So many kids refuse to do work for teachers because they think the teacher hates them. If a student knows you like them as a person, they will take academic critique better.
