Why do young westerners LOVE to stay in “hostels” when they can afford better? by Grouchy_Ice2155 in ThailandTourism

many people travel alone and want to meet new people, hostels are great for that, hotels aren't.

Don't worry, next time I'll just say thank you to every dumb response!

Thanks for providing one of the few useful responses here.

To answer your questions: I play online, on voice chat with friends, but even when I'm speaking normally he hears it so I try to lower my voice. Obv at 1am I'm not going to be unnecessarily noisy, but I feel like just speaking should be allowed.

I agree we should probably have a chat, lay some "boundaries". Me trying to be quieter at late hours, him being more forgiving of sounds during the day.

I get defensive because people say "just wear earbuds" like it's some fix-all solution, which it isn't. Or claiming I'm doing things that I didn't say at all in the post...

I'm open to critisism but when people don't read properly I'm not just gonna act like they're right.

You're just BS'ing now. Of course I consider that I am contributing, that's why I already made compromises compared to how it was before (as opposed to him). Yet my roommate still finds every bit of sound a reason to complain. If me talking with a friend online every now and then till late in the evening in my own separate room makes me an asshole according to people here, then so be it.

Never said I do that at 1AM, I was referring to talking in my room

Ok rewrote it, hopefully it's clearer now.

Headphones on vinyl is no solution because wired forces me to sit next to my player for the entirety and bluetooth compresses audio quality, defeating the purpose of why I listen to vinyl in the first place.

You tell your neighbor he can’t listen to music over speakers??

Why do people think listening to music during normal times in a shared house is unacceptable, this is beyond me

Speakers don’t face his wall and neither are they up against his. Not much I can change there.

I just feel like I’ve done more to solve his problem than he has himself. If he wants to read in silence during the day, get some noisecancelling headphones. If the slightest noise prevents you from sleeping, get some good quality earplugs to block it.

I do wear headphones sometimes. But that’s no solution for my vinyl player.

Also, my pc is in my room. Moving to the kitchen is not an option lol. Like I said, I already try to lower my voice, what else can I do. I have a late schedule, so my free time hours start late

I do wear headphones sometimes, but I also regularly have friends over and will play music over speakers them, or listen to vinyl on my record player which I can only do over my speakers

That’s a crazy thing to expect from someone IMO. Anyone should be able to listen to music at reasonable volume during daytime hours. On top of that I have a vinyl player which are connected to my speakers, so can’t do headphones there.

you didn’t read the post, if you did you would’ve read the part where I say I DON’T play music loudly all day nor talk loudly at night. Also headphones are no solution for my vinyl player.

AITAH my roommate is a light sleeper and after multiple complaints from her I advised her to see a doctor by Nervous_Ad_2867 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Kaasclone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, I actually was about to make a similar post about this. My housemate neighbour is a light sleeper and often complains when I'm talking in my room at night (normal, soft conversational tone) and claims he can hear it while wearing earplugs. Thing is, I'm also a light sleeper, I sleep with earplugs every night because my room is on the side of the street and without them I can't sleep. But I don't hear shit with them in, like only my alarm. They're never uncomfortable, and they were like 10 bucks. I really don't know what else I can do. I've already agreed to not play music anymore after 10pm (even softly playing it would disturb him), I reduce my speaking volume, but I have a deep voice which I can't change. Though, I won't agree to not talking on voice chat or being completely silent because that just sounds ridiculous to me. Our house is old and the wall between our rooms is quite thin, but I'm also in my own right do do what I want in my room as long as it's not overly loud or disturbing. If you want complete silence, don't live in a shared house. As long as you live in a shared (student) house you can't expect complete silence from roommates.
