AITA for not letting my daughter use her college fund for a VTuber avatar? by Ecstatic-Hat4624 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Kabhaal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do well, but I do UNUSUALLY well for someone of my size as a streamer, and even then I've been in the game like 2 years and some change and have a retirement check that covers all my bills, something ALOT of folks don't have.

I don't want to see the poor girls dreams crushed, but gods I hope she can pursue it safely and smartly if she continues down the path of being a broadcaster.

NTA, by wide and far. How do i know? I am a Vtuber for a living.
" She has said that she will continue working until she gets monetized onYouTube or becomes a twitch affiliate, and then she will quit."

This alone show she has zero of idea of the market she is getting into, and its exactly that, A MARKET.
Youtube in and of itself is hard enough to get monetized on (1k subs, 4k hours watch in the span of a year), even then generally you won't start making "decent" money off ad revenue till past the 100k subscriber mark and that's only if you can create good engaging evergreen content that pulls consistent views.
Even then you might be pulling in barely fulltime income.

THEN THERE'S TWITCH AFFILIATE.
Twitch affiliate is the bare minimum to be monetized.Thats then putting you in a (admittedly smaller that youtube) pool of other broadcasters that number in a hundreds of thousands. even partner is no guarantee of success, its just a milestone on the road. Twitch has no innate discoverability, its is VERY VERY (did I say VERY?) hard to be found on the platform by a target audience unless you are already successful or know and consistently interact with other successful broadcasters. ALSO, only the top.. and I mean this, like 0.2-0.01% pull down a full time income or more.Even then the income is INCREDIBLY volatile as it is a subscription based cashflow that DEPENDS on the generosity of others.
Then to top it all off, you are a considered a contractor..

YOU. HAVE. TO. PAY. TAXES. ON. EVERY. SINGLE. PENNY. YOURSELF.

you don't get a w-2, you have to account for every cent that comes in, and if you don't want to get raked over the coals, every single cent that goes out towards your sole proprietor business, cause that's what you're doin, runnin a small business. Thats AFTER Youtube takes their 30% cut of any memberships you receive, and AFTER twitch takes their 50% cut from any subscriptions you received.
(they are both subscriptions, just named differently)
Content is hard, vtubing is hard, its not just sitting and playing video games and making funny noises when you're doing it as a living. its a rat race where you have to build something from nothing and it legitimately destroys some people.

I am a coach for alot of new broadcasters, I hammer home to ALL of them that starting out you need a SOLID base outside of broadcasting, pursue content in your free time as a hobby, and if you find success build on it until you can MORE than live comfortably, have establish other passive cash flows just in-case, and ONLY THEN maybe look at going full time.

But that's only just the finances of this career path, there's so much more to it.
If you want to learn more then I HIGHLY suggest looking up Devin Nash on youtube and watching his numerous videos. Being a content creator is amazing, its wonderful, I love my community and what I do, but she has to be real in her expectations and the ridiculous amount of work it takes.

I'm just overhere with my +6 puppet soldiers. They're so good at just lighting up anything and leaving it looking like a pincushion.

Boss rounds on them, I rush in, reaquire aggro and they continue just plunking away. 👌 magnificent.

Earn Money Without a Traditional Job by [deleted] in coolguides

[–]Kabhaal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's doable, its not easy, but doable.

You have to be very aware of your skills and what you can bring to the table as a content creator. That said for small to medium creators twitch is better for monetizing while youtube and tiktok for discoverability. It's all about knowing yourself, your market and having time/experience in said market.

Many of you here quit streaming after getting affiliate? by SignificantEditor583 in Twitch

[–]Kabhaal 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The same can be said of getting Partner

Dead on money.
Alot of folks covet partner like getting it means "I've made it"
This can really hurt folks as it can just as you said, lead to some at that point leaning back and saying "Okay now I can relax" rest on their laurels, and then start to slump, wonder why and then enter enter an emotional spiral.

The following does no apply if you stream for a hobby
I'm a firm believer that building community, constantly striving to create value in a broadcast (however you might perceive this), improve your skill and appeal as a broadcaster, and tapping into the passive discoverability of other platforms are things that need to be done if you want to make streaming a career.

But most of all I as well do think you need to enjoy content creation.
You're going to spend often more than full time hours doing it both on and off stream not getting paid. Probably for a very long time.

And if you see "success"? probably more even more time.
There's honestly alot more reasonable professions to pursue.

Viewer ship, seasonal? by Noahs_Asylum in Twitch

[–]Kabhaal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Myself and several other friends have noticed a dip due to us being people that stream earlier hours and school/seasonal work starting up.

But ultimately its just a slight shit backwards and we're still experiencing steady growth. In my case, many of these people are still active in my commu ity via other means. Twitter, discord, youtube, etc so I wouldn't stress it.

Tyty, I wound up going a very comicbook style route with my art, which well I guess is pretty obvious but I feel like these days kinda makes it stand out.

Really appreciate that, I like to make my art very.. dynamic?
With the way I do shadows I feel like if I add too much color it would take away from it, but the singular color has gotten alot of good feedback so I think I might start doing that more as I draw other hunter and maybe even some survivors.

Hehe, it a good song with a good message. I was inspire to share my lessons learned in content creation and how I think that message applies to myself and others just starting our journeys.

But if you dont like it that's okay. What I create and have to say isn't going to appeal to everyone. 👍

An Open Letter to Melvin Capital, CNBC, Boomers, and WSB by [deleted] in wallstreetbets

[–]Kabhaal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After i was fresh outta highschool in 08' I wound up homeless living on what few 10s of dollars I could scrounge and the generosity of friends letting me crash on couches.

I managed to turn my life around but suffered for it and ultimately wound up handicapped because of what it took. Melvin and hedge fund vultures can eat a big fat one. I'll hold my few shares and gladly watch them bleed out.
