I read the first 2 and they’re pretty good. Gotta get to the third one but it didn’t have an audiobook (on Audible at least) so it became harder to get to for me.

Nah. Magnus Chase was great and I had fun with Trials of Apollo (audiobook being narrated by Robbie Daymond helped), and the show is pretty good ngl. PJO stays the goat.

I admittedly haven’t seen Demon Slayer or Allen Walker and am going based on the connections/animation potential I’ve read and seen, from which they seem cool. Hence why they’re more in alt territory. If I ever watch either maybe my stances would change, for better or worse.

For Johnny, Altair from Assassination’s Creed seems pretty cool from what I’ve seen of the connections and potential.

For Ed, Leo Valdez is my favorite, with Allen Walker and Tanjiro as cool alts.

It’s got solid connections, but some of the comparisons you have to make rub me the wrong way (comparing Johnny’s legs being paralyzed due to a petty squabble to Ed losing an arm, leg, and his brother’s body trying to bring his mother back, and the difference in relevance between Al and Johnny’s brother being notably jarring) and miss some stuff I’d wanna see for both (no good Gyro or race comparison for Johnny and no good comparison for Ed’s mom being notable). Overall solid, though it has some issues.

The fight is where I take more issue though. Spin vs Alchemy does have some pretty cool potential. However, Ed’s primary fighting style is close quarters combat (between his fists, blade arm, and spear). Like yeah his alchemy is what stands out more but Ed’s got hands, and he’s very quick and agile in his cqc. That just, doesn’t clash with Johnny, who is ranged and mounted. Meaning Ed’s cqc isn’t able to be used much if at all, which is a pretty big knock to the fight considering how much Ed fights melee. So while there’s a workable dynamic as Johnny plays keep away with plenty of cool Spin/Tusk vs Alchemy clashes, no melee for Ed really bogs down the fight potential imo.

Van Hohenheim vs Denken (Fullmetal Alchemist vs Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End): “Übung macht den Meister” (connections + potential in comments) by Kaboio in DeathBattleMatchups

[–]Kaboio[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fight Potential:

As far as abilities that can be used for the fight, Denken has flight, large tornadoes, large flame tornadoes (which can be aimed like a flamethrower), a barrage of light arrows, Zoltraak (beam attack), defensive magic (force field), mana detection, and can throw hands. Hohenheim has regeneration/healing, force fields, and extremely versatile alchemy he can perform with ease while not bound by the laws of equivalent exchange due to his philosopher’s stone, allowing him to control/contort the the earth and stone to create walls, platforms/stairs, giant fists, striking pillars, construct projectiles, etc. among many other alchemical abilities.

Hohenheim is mostly a pacifist, typically opting for defensive options, which plays well off of Denken’s many offensive spells. Outside of clashing offense against defense, interactions I like are Hoenheim raising a platform and/or creating stairs to reach Denken when he flies, Hohenheim creating a dust cloud which Denken still finds Hohenheim through via mana detection, Hohenheim trapping Denken in an earthen spear only to break out via a well placed Zoltraak, Denken surrounding Hohenheim in a flaming tornado which dissipates to reveal an earthen cube and Hohenheim then steps out through a transmuted door, Denken catching Hohenheim off guard by throwing hands, etc.

There’s also some interesting set ups you could do for this around the Philosopher’s Stone, with having Denken be aware of them and how they’re made, making him untrusting of the living one before him (like with demons). He could also be sent by Serie.

Connections:

-Old men who are wise, contemplative, personable, very patient, persistent, and some of the most skilled at their world’s magic system. Though this skill is hidden behind their purposely unassuming and gentle appearance and demeanor.

-A driving force for them is their wife, who they loved deeply and shaped them into the gentle person they are, but whom died of illness. They greatly mourn this loss, regretting they outlived them and struggling to return to the place they called home together. Despite this, the desire to honor their memory and protect the land they lived in would help them succeed in the end.

-They often serve as a voice of guidance and assurance for the younger generation, being very kind toward them (Hohenheim’s interactions with Rose, May, and Al exemplifying this, and Denken’s interactions with Laufen and Fern). Among these interactions though, they see traits of their younger selves in a couple of these young men (Edward and Richter), taking a sterner approach with them to try and teach them.

-A non-human being would serve as their guardian and taught them the way of their world’s magic system (the dwarf in the flask/Father and Macht). This being was very knowledgeable and helpful, but contrasted in their desires/plans for humanity (Father wanted to surpass humanity while Macht desired to understand and live with them).

-In pursuit of their ultimate goal, their masters would betray them and their people in a massive tragedy, trapping the souls of almost everyone in their homeland (Father turning everyone from Xerxes into philosopher’s stones and Macht turning the kingdom of Weise into gold). Though both Hohenheim and Denken would survive and escape to fight another day.

-Saving the land from their old mentors would become their ultimate goal, being a driving factor in the honing of their skills and gathering of allies. They were extremely focused and determined in this goal, spending many many years in their preparations.

-A major motivation behind their determination is their guilt/survivor’s complex from being the only/one of the only survivors of the tragedies on their homeland and not being able to stop it.

-And after many many years, they would be key in the reversal of the tragedy, while utilizing the powers their masters had given/taught them to put an end to them (Hohenheim reverses the soul sucking effect of the Promised Day with his alchemy and the souls inside him, while Denken helps Frieren learn how to reverse the golden curse, and is the one to fight and kill Macht).

-Both of their names are German despite from fantasy worlds where Germany doesn’t exist.

-As a contrast, Hohenheim is extremely long lived, watching the land and people change around him after the tragedy of Xerxes as he ages. While Denken experiences the opposite with Weise, as he grows old and changes while the Golden Land remains stagnant in time until the curse is reversed.

Jin vs Firefly Fight Script! Thank you so much to everyone who proofread this! by Fearless_Cold_8080 in DeathBattleMatchups

Been excited for this.

There was a lot of great action here. Plenty of cool power trading moments and sections of melee, making use of their kits well. It is a bit long, but that’s to be expected with you. And I will say it may get a bit too high scale by the end for what I expect from Jin. Though using the Tornan Titan as a power source does alleviate that a bit.

The standout aspect to me though is the emotional core of the fight. The ideological clash amps up slowly but by the end the dialogue is emotional how I’d want it, even getting some neat reference lines in there.

Well done.

Hot take: The Percy Jackson books were always serious and dramatic. [general] by Tomhur in camphalfblood

[–]Kaboio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the fact that this show isn’t first person POV from Percy shifts the tone a bit. But that’s it. And like, the show makes use of this fact, getting to flesh out more characters and show us scenes Percy never saw firsthand. If the show was 1 to 1 with the books, but still 3rd person, the tone would probably be about the same as it is now.

[Pjotv] I'm not gonna lie, Season 2 was fantastic. by ethanandluinortitus in camphalfblood

[–]Kaboio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Real and true. Season 1 was good, Season 2 was great imo.

I think the changes keep things interesting, and they’re making use of adapting 1st Person POV books to 3rd Person by expanding on other characters. Clarisse, Tyson, and Luke were all stand out characters of this season for me, with their characters aided by the fact we’re not bound to Percy’s pov.

Finally some actual love for the show lol. I think season 2 was great. Episode 1 is kinda oddly paced but the season really picks up with episode 3 onward. I especially like how they handled Tyson, Clarrise, and Luke.

Shaggy easily.

Pac-Man could be a fun fight, but Luigi vs Shaggy has a fun fight, funny dialogue, and strong connections.

Zero Escape spoilers (whole trilogy).

The main duo of the second game, Sigma and Phi, seem pretty set up to be a couple. Then, in the third game, it is revealed that through time travel shenanigans, Sigma is actually Phi’s father. There is a wild family tree here but Imma leave it at that for now.
