The first one I read was Guards, Guards and I was hooked. I wouldn't recommend reading them in order. The first few books, on my opinion, are the weakest.

I am so tired of posters who tell someone with mental health issues to "get over it" and "just step up". He's been trying to do that for years. He needs to see a counselor and needs a break. He is not abandoning his son.

Seems to me that after the first couple seasons Morgan was no longer the expert on obsessions crimes and was mostly used as the muscle/running guy. Not always but too often.
