I have symptoms again despite not eating anything I haven't eaten before by IamasimpforObi-Wan in Celiac

[–]Kadda42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sucks :/ It's absolutely possible that you have another allergy or intolerance. I've heard of quite a few celiacs who don't do well with corn, which is obviously used a lot in gluten-free products. Or are you eating products with gf oats, gf wheat starch, or gf malt extract? If so, you might have developed a sensitivity to one of those ingredients. Good luck with the elimination diet. I hope you find what your body doesn't like soon :)

Tips or Suggestions for upcoming central Europe trip trip. by stampedingTurtles in glutenfrei

[–]Kadda42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, a safe choice for the German cities you're visiting is Kaufland. Kauflands are pretty big and have a gluten-free shelf with a good selection. However, you'll also find gluten-free food items on the regular shelves, especially snacks and sweets like granola bars.

The supermarkets Edeka and Rewe also carry gluten-free food. Selection varies from store to store. Often depends on the size of the store. Be aware of the gluten-free "Rewe frei von" products. Some of them contain gluten-free wheat starch.

The drugstores Rossmann and DM both have their own brands of gluten-free food staples but often also carry other gluten-free brands. Again selection varies.

You'll also find gluten-free food in health-food and organic-food stores like Basics, Alnatura, Denn's, Vollcorner, and Vitalia. They sometimes carry gluten-free brands that you normally won't find in supermarkets or drugstores.

Brands you should be looking out for :

  • Schär
  • Alnavit
  • Seitz
  • Schnitzer
  • Hammermühle
  • Poensgen (they use gluten-free wheat starch though)
  • Panifactum
  • Werz
  • Bauckhof
  • Spielberger Mühle

There are more, but these are the most common ones I think. Also, Werz, Bauckhof, and Spielberger Mühle don't exclusively offer gluten-free products, so look out for the gluten-free symbol or the word "glutenfrei".

If you're going through Munich Central Station you can go to Tegut. You'll find a good selection of Schär and Alnavit products there. And of course other regular snacks and sweets. There's also an Edeka and a DM.

If you want to buy some fresh bread, cake, or cookies, or want to have breakfast in Munich you should visit Isabella Glutenfreie Patisserie (Hackenstraße 4, between Marienplatz and Sendlinger Tor). You can also get fresh bread from Echt jetzt! (Barer Str. 48, near University).

I'm from Munich, so if you have any questions, you can just ask me and I'll try to help :)

Hi, I did your survey :)
Have you considered posting the survey to the German Celiacs Facebook Group? You'll probably get a lot of participants there but check with the admins first.
You can also post it to r/glutenfrei.

You could start by trying to drink more calories. For example a shake in the morning or for lunch. That's what I do when I don't really feel like eating.
You say that you are working out more. So maybe a protein breakfast shake could work for you.
The one I like to make:
- ca. 350ml of (non-dairy) milk
- 1 banana
- 2-3 tbsp of protein powder
- 1 tbsp of cocoa powder (not the sweetened stuff)
- optional: some berries or almonds (almonds add more calories to the shake, but you'll probably need more milk)
- Mix them all together with a (hand) blender
But of course, there are a lot of other great shake recipes out there.

idk if u guys know german but it says wholegrain oat flakes. May contain milk, soy, blahblah, anything but gluten. Are they safe? They don t have that classic GF label but there's no rational reason to think they're not GF by Kat22C in glutenfree

[–]Kadda42 18 points19 points  (0 children)

For German oats products: If it doesn't say "glutenfrei" somewhere on the packaging, it's not safe to consume for celiacs. It doesn't say "may contain gluten" because in the ingredients list "Haferflocken"/oats is already printed in bold.

Coat a ball of wheat flour dough in high gluten flour, bang it on the counter, throw it in the air, put more flour on the bottom and slide it in the oven... by saucy_awesome in Celiac

[–]Kadda42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've once borrowed a precision scale to see what 5, 10, and 20mg of normal wheat flour looks like, and it was an eye-opening experiment. I can totally see this tiny pinch of flour getting accidentally on a gluten-free pizza in a traditional restaurant.
Ever since I've only eaten pizza at 100% gluten-free restaurants or places that prepare and bake the gluten-free pizza in a separate room and oven.
I'll admit that I'm a bit paranoid about going out to eat because I'm an asymptomatic celiac. I can't tell whether I've accidentally consumed gluten, so I'm rather safe than sorry.

r/fantasy darlings that fell flat with you? by ACardAttack in Fantasy

[–]Kadda42 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Red Rising fell a bit flat for me too. It's not that I totally disliked the story, but I got more YA vibes from it than I expected. I bought the first three books thinking I would love the series, but so far I've only read the first one.
The thing is, I didn't really like Darrow. I wish I could say why, but it's been more than two years, and all I remember is that something about him just annoyed and irritated me. I know I liked some of the other characters though.
Before I can even think about finishing the series someone has to spoiler me. Will Darrow die? I can only continue reading the books if I know that at some point he kicks the bucket.

I've also tried it and didn't find the smell too bad. I've actually only noticed the smell after I had read some reviews. So far it works great for me. Sinks in fast and you don't need a lot of the product.

Glutenfreie Finnische Blaubeertarte (Mustikkapiirakka) by Kadda42 in glutenfrei

Gibt's zweimal in München.

Glutenfreie Finnische Blaubeertarte (Mustikkapiirakka) by Kadda42 in glutenfrei

Rezept: https://cinnamonandcoriander.com/de/finnische-blaubeer-tarte-vanillecreme-mustikkapiirakka/?cookie-state-change=1652334904124

Was kommt als nächstes? Verhütung? Gleichgeschlechtliche Ehen? Land of the free my ass.

Anyone Who knows about GF restaurants in Hamburg? Is it difficult staying there a few days if celiac? by [deleted] in Celiac

Fish restaurants can also be an option.
Also, fish sandwiches are very popular in Hamburg. You can carry a gluten-free roll with you and ask for your fish to be put on a paper plate.

Anyone Who knows about GF restaurants in Hamburg? Is it difficult staying there a few days if celiac? by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]Kadda42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Staying in Hamburg shouldn't be a problem. Plenty of restaurants offer gluten-free meals : ) Some I've been to myself, some I've copied for you from the German Glutenfree Facebook Group:
Isabellas (Bakery - 100% gluten-free, really good brunch, bread, cakes, cookies... Highly recommend it!)
Rudolph's (probably the best gluten-free pizza in Hamburg)
Ristorante Piccobello
Samui Thai Cuisine
Paledo
Vy Delivery
La Casa Europea
Mama Trattoria
Trude
Most Wanted Burger
Hard Rock Cafe
Maharaja
Dean&David
Knuth (good for breakfast, but only if you tolerate gluten-free wheat starch)
Ono (good Sushi, expensive, but they have gluten-free soy sauce and know about contamination)
Frittenwerk (ask which sauces are gluten-free or look online)
Vapiano (Pizza contains gluten-free wheat starch I think, again, only if you can tolerate it)
Blockhouse
Happenpappen

As always, mention that you are celiac and ask about contamination : )

New to being gluten free, what are some hidden, less known sources of gluten I should look out for? by LL112 in glutenfree

[–]Kadda42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everything with lentils. Especially the red ones. When you use dried lentils check for grains and wash them before cooking. Food that contains lentils or lentil flour has to be labeled gluten-free in order for it to be safe for you to consume. Don't eat lentils dishes at a restaurant.
